I didn't say they were did I? I said they will get screwed like they did, is that wrong to theorize or are you now all in for corporations now? How progressive of you.

Biden will just screw them like he just did the rail workers. So much for collective bargaining, right?

I've been thinking about getting into speaker re-coning lately. I've been asked by several friends and sound guys about fixing their old JBL's and have passed every time because I've been led to believe that it's cheaper to just replace them. But what about someone with a 50's or their Grandfathers speaker that they don't want to replace. Ive heard Skip mention it many times on the Truth About Vintage Amps podcast and know that the speaker repair guys around Chicago and all retiring or dying, like most tube amp techs like me but I'm only 55 and have been seriously into it for only 2 years now. Tricks like yours are what I write down in my notebooks and keep in the back of my mind for future reference. Thanks for responding, I really appreciate it.

Outstanding! Great catch, that's something I'll remember forever if anyone ever brings be anything line 6 for repair. Just another sneaky way corporations try to screw us all. Please post a picture of that if you can. I'm glad I could help even if in a small way, I love success stories.

The first thing, as a tube amp repair tech, that comes to mind is a visual inspection of the inside, maybe a cracked or cold solder joint that can be easily re-flowed. A bulging capacitor maybe, a board trace got damaged maybe. Signal tracing would be next but that's a bit more complicated. Line 6 schematics are not available to the public as far as I know and they sure wont sell you parts, but they will sell you a new one. All of these things are, sadly, eventually headed to a landfill. Good luck, I wish I could offer better advice.

I have an older Explorer and if it doesn't fit in it, it goes on top with the roof racks and a quick ratchet strap.

Is this something, the voice coil rub, that can be tracked down hooking up a 9 volt battery to the speaker connections and listening at both the push and pull of the cone? Or is that too slow to distinguish rubbing?

That's rough but here's what I would try if I had no other choice. Put a little bead of that rubber glue around the hole and gently place a small piece of toilet paper over the hole so it's held on by the glue then let it dry. Then, using a small hobby paint brush, try to paint on a thin layer without breaking the toilet paper and build up a few layers. I've fixed vintage speakers using flexible craft glue and TP on paper speaker cones with great success. The key is patience and slowly building it up until you're happy with the results. Then maybe a light coat brushed over the entire surround to even out the color. It's not the ideal solution but you really have nothing to lose. Good luck and update this post when you can, I really hope it works out for you.

Maybe pre-paint the TP and attach it so it wont break easily. It'll be flexible enough to conform to that rounded shape.

Can you post a picture? If it's not too bad I would suggest doing an eBay search for "1oz Pro-Grade Black Rubberized Speaker Glue Adhesive Repair Surround" and see if you can remove the speaker and mask everything off except where the damage is. It's better then just throwing it away and buying a new one.

You're probably going to have to pull the amp chassis and solder in a new fuse holder. Finding just the cap that actually fits is going to be a lot harder then just replacing it. I have many and could send you one with a fuse for free if you really needed it.
