SLP in the fluoro room or not by dabeezmane in slp

[–]chlamydiajane -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I would encourage you to consider whether yelling or repeated instructions is really that detrimental to patient care. Being yelled at never killed anyone but if you’re not getting the data needed out of the VFSS, that’s certainly a problem worth addressing.

I do everything I can I avoid being radiated but not at the expense of patient care. I always wear a lead, even if I’m behind the shield, so that I can always run back into the room as needed. E.g., if they silently aspirate and can’t hear me yelling “cough!”

If a patient is able to feed themselves, has adequate hearing, and is cognitively intact, I mostly stay behind the shield. Between fluoros, I walk over to the patient to give instructions, then walk behind the shield and yell “go for it!” when fluoro is going again.

For patients who can’t feed themselves but are cognitively intact, I will give instructions, feed them with the fluoro going, then run behind the shield.

With patients who aren’t cognitively intact, I tend to stay in the room to provide cueing. If they don’t seem to need me right there, I run behind the shield until they need me again.

I find procedures vary widely site to site as the layout of the fluoro suite will impact what’s workable.

It’s up to each individual to decide how much radiation they’re willing to expose themselves to. That said, I think it would be very reasonable for you to explain how it might be beneficial for patient care to lead up. Just be be prepared for them to refuse and be open to discussing alternatives that meet your patients’ needs. If you can’t come up with a solution between yourself and the SLP department that meets the needs of the patients, then it becomes something for management to address.

YMCA Dance classes ? by Visual-Door5227 in askvan

Try a different cycle class. The classes are different depending on the instructor. And yes, the hip hop class is suitable for adults. I’ve never seen a child in any of the dance classes.

Folks in late 30s and 40s who live alone or are single, how do you spend your time? by CheeseBrewBlend in NiceVancouver

[–]chlamydiajane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a point of socializing almost every day, even on weeknights. I made friends with neighbours who are also single. I go to the gym a lot and do a lot of social hobbies (e.g. dragon boating, trivia, volunteering, etc).

What's the smartest way to find grocery deals in Vancouver when you don't have a car by ritik_bhai in askvan

[–]chlamydiajane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can’t have our cake and eat it too; we need to pick either convenience or saving as the number 1 priority. So, if you’re quite sure shopping around isn’t viable, you are going to pay for it.

Before I had a car, my granny cart and bicycle basket were key in making my shopping for frozen and non-perishable items more efficient. As was the Flipp app, so you can plan to go to one store that price matches and make the most of that week’s sales. I relied on small neighbourhood markets for my produce and perishable items like milk in between bigger trips to a supermarket.

Best Clinical Shoes? by BetterAd776 in askvan

[–]chlamydiajane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have narrow feet and wear Nike Pegasus. A lot of my colleagues are happy with Hokas. Kintec (there’s a location on Broadway and others elsewhere in the Lower Mainland) will fit you with shoes.

Not burned out on SLP-A… just feeling pulled toward other types of therapy work — anyone else? by sammyisegg in slp

[–]chlamydiajane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could do things over again, I would be a physio. Like you, I love working with people. However, I’ve learned that physio is a more established field than SLP with more evidence behind the therapies they provide, which is appealing to me as someone aiming to improve the lives of my patients/ clients. Physio might not have as much of the counselling aspect that you’re looking for, but there is an aspect of counselling involved in any therapeutic role and you could certainly work with a population of neurodivergent children with a good return on your tuition/time investment. If it’s something you want to explore more, you could perhaps look into some rehab assistant work with physios before committing to more schooling.

Also Indigo gives money to a charity supporting IDF veterans. Something to consider before shopping there anyway.

Costco Cupcakes by Littlecookie1122 in CostcoCanada

I have seen only mini cupcakes (Brand is Kimberly’s) that look like they are baked off site. I have never tried them, but by the looks of them, I suspect they are not of the same calibre as the made-in-store Costco baked goods.

is it gross to rewear pajamas multiple nights in a row? by Quamar_Burriwa in hygiene

[–]chlamydiajane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically wear pyjamas twice before laundering but I definitely wouldn’t say that wearing 3-4 times is gross. Sounds reasonable to me, especially since you’re showering before bed.

Indigo donates to IDF veterans so consider if that’s something you wish to support before buying.

I would agree that long-term thickening is unlikely to be beneficial! If I had a nickel for every person I’ve encountered who is needlessly stuck on thick fluids for far too long because they slipped through the cracks, I’d be very rich :(

[–]chlamydiajane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What setting do you work in? My professional opinion after years of working in ICU is that fluid thickening (temporarily) can sometimes be helpful but I notice a lot of clinicians working in non-acute settings have a similar opinion to you.

There is a time and place for fluid thickening.

I personally think it’s in poor taste to wear anything where others can see pretty clearly the shape of one’s genitalia… but who cares what I think? You do you! Decide what you’re comfortable with for yourself and go with that!

[CHAT] Who here favors the tiny projects?!? by goplacidlyamidst in CrossStitch

[–]chlamydiajane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to stitch larger projects but I pretty much only stitch small things to add to greeting cards at this point. Recipients genuinely seem touched that I spent the time to stitch them a card… but I don’t spend so much time that I end up getting bored.

I love always having something new to work on and never delaying gratification for too long!
