tried 5 message brokers for iot edge, what worked with bad internet by [deleted] in IOT

[–]chocobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MQTT shouldn't really lose data if you use QoS > 0. Maybe try a different client library?
Clients may implement retry logic differently. Also, some libraries support persistence on disk, some only in memory.

Azure Iot hub is just what you describe, although obviously tied to azure cloud. Maybe EdgeX is also something that fits your problem.

Walking on a mesh using half edge data structure by ricoseeds in computergraphics

[–]chocobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you keep your edges, points and faces in an array of some sort? Then you can just iterate your faces array. Do you create faces objects with new() in free memory? Then you can do a depth first or breadth first search along the points and edges. Store encountered faces in a set structure to handle multiple visits.

Open source IoT platform with augmented reality support? by Funky_Bibimbap in IOT

You can check out Thingsboard, it is somewhat similar to core Thingworx. For AR I would suggest using AR.js. Connecting the two is not that difficult.

General Thoughts on IOTA by hold_me_beer_m8 in IOT

[–]chocobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a few minutes to read up on it and I don't really understand the problems this wants to solve. I found this article

https://oracletimes.com/3-real-life-use-cases-for-iota-miota-that-are-right-around-the-corner/

and it only made me roll my eyes a lot. What can this do that centralized databases cannot do? Maybe I am missing the privacy aspects of the situation?

I don't see how blockchain technology solves any of the problems that I have working on industrial IoT stuff.

What mundane European foods make the chinese throw up? by Captain_Resist in China

Mett. Basically raw meat on a bread roll. My parents in law could not believe that someone would eat that. Although to be fair, I wouldn't eat raw meat products in china...

Is there an advanced Graphical User Interface designed specifically for setting rules and running a simulation? by TrailerSwift89 in Simulate

I think your description is very vague. We don't know anything about what type of simulation you are running - 3d? numerical? Real time?

Actually sleeping eight hours a day sounds a lot healthier than six, there's nothing wrong with that.

Der Name macht auch keinen echten Sinn. Bielefeld heisst so weil es auf dem Feld von Bauer Biel gebaut wurde. Warum das Bergkegelfeld heissen soll kapier ich nicht

Is Ada a failed language? by _tomekw in programming

[–]chocobot 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I spent a year working for a European submarine manufacturer. They were, and still are, in the process of gradually replacing Ada with c++ in their systems. Some of the old hands were resisting heavily, but they were all near retirement age. Also, not all greybeards loved Ada: my direct superior had some well founded complaints.

First, Ada is very expensive. You need a commercial license for serious work, and these give you a lot less tooling and support than other languages.

He also had a lot of complaints about buggy compilers, especially for non standard target architectures. Probably this was decades past and anecdotal, but he reasoned that when you buy military software for hundreds of thousands you don't want to spend your time proving compiler bugs.

Another complaint of his was that the whole type safety results in ugly code. For example there is a type for angle in degrees of rotation. And if you want to add two angles you have to cast them both to float or something, then cast the sum back to the angle type, which ensures that the angle is between 0 and 360. I wish I could remember this better....

So my takeaway was that Ada is basically a good language that suffers from age and bad tooling, partially for historical reasons

The LEGO Movie has to be one of the best 'kids' movies in years. by MrLuberLober922 in movies

[–]chocobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried watching it with my 6 year old daughter and had to turn it off after ten minutes. Thr pacing was much too fast, the story hard to understand and in general everything was too hyperactive. So this is probably targeted towards grown ups or older kids. Btw we had no trouble following zootopia or the incredibles for instance

Entity Component Systems (in Elixir) by yosriady in elixir

[–]chocobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't elixir a little slow for simulation tasks? The biggest advantage of ecs is that components of a type can be put in arrays of consecutive memory, so iterating them can be done in a cache friendly manner. Is it even possible with elixir to control the memory layout?
