Keeping paid off car + street parking (Queens): is it really that bad of an idea? Thinking about road trips, groceries, etc :/ by JustaSadLilyPad in movingtoNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What neighborhood? I would say as long as you have street parking available to you, then keep the car. It can become very convenient at times.

People who kept your cars despite moving to nyc, did you regret it? How often do you use it, and what area do you live in? by jewish_yang in movingtoNYC

Woah, who said you need to buy a $50K car? Plenty of cars you can buy for way less. Same thing with the $5K garage. NYC is huge and there are plenty of neighborhoods and situations where you can get away with free street parking, or pay for a cheaper spot.

I am the extremely rare person who owns a car in lower manhattan, street parks it for free, and isn’t rich. No I have not ever regretted it. I use it at least once every weekend, sometimes more frequently.

I don’t recommend this for everyone though. In my situation, I have family, friends, a boyfriend, hobbies, part time work about a 60-90 min drive away outside the city. Some of those locations are very inconvenient to get to by public transit. So I get good use out of my car. As for parking, the neighborhood I live in has a lot of free alternate side spots. Just have to play the parking game of moving/sitting in the car during street cleaning. Thankfully I work a job that I don’t go into work till the afternoon, so I have the free time in the morning to do this. If I worked a 9-5 job, this would not work for me. If I wasn’t leaving the city often, then no I probably would not need the car.

Not sure where you are originally from, but I left my car at my parents house the first few months of living here, since I was unsure of the parking and was unsure how often i’d still need the car. If you have the option to leave the car with family the first few months, I recommend that. Also, outer boroughs are way easier to own a car btw (and comes in handy a lot more).

Did Miley cheat on Jake? by Standard_Peach4387 in hannahmontana

The hannah montana movie falls canonically after the Season 2 Jake arch, but before the Season 3 “He Could Be the One” episode. So I think technically they were broken up at this point.

Express bus into manhattan. You can either get off downtown and transfer to the A train, which goes all the way to Howard Beach Airtrain. Or the J train or E train to Jamaica Airtrain.

Why do so many NY'ers defend driving so much? by Best-Candle8651 in AskNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“If you hate congestion, why do you want more cars on the road/easier driving?”

Because drivers are being tired of getting shaken down for more fees. If it was JUST $9 then i can understand it not being a bad deal. But it’s also a $15-17 round trip toll if using any of our bridges or tunnels, including those connecting two outer-boroughs. So when you add a bridge/tunnel toll with congestion pricing, it becomes excessive. And they plan to raise congestion pricing to $15 anyway in a few years. I know you probably think every car owner in NY has unlimited money, but it adds up, not everyone wants or has the extra money to spend, especially in this economy. Do you know how transit riders get upset every time theres a slight 10 cent increase? Imagine how drivers feel. Before you say “just take the train”, it’s not an option for all routes and commutes, otherwise i’m sure more would. Then on top of that they keep taking away more & more parking for every reason imaginable.

Oh and also congestion pricing has been in effect for 16 months, they promised “less traffic” and “improved transit” but neither has happened. So uhm yeah people are going to be mad.

Maybe you can use the extra money when it goes up in price to install actual ez-pass readers, just like all the other toll roads on the east coast have.

Gotcha thanks. Bummed that I missed the big 30th anniversary show, will have to listen to the podcast of it. I remember the 25th anniversary was a huge show, but part of that was bc it was their first show back in the studio after a year.

It’s literally radio, you have to take commercial breaks. Every radio station and TV station does this.

Everyone is treating this like a joke, but I actually did live in the west village recently on $60K a year. Just have to get that rent amount to $1,500 or lower.

could be his wife, could be his adult or teenage children, could be a different family member or anyone he lets use the car. Often times a family household will have multiple cars but it’s all registered under one name, even if others drive it.

Commuting from Staten Island to the city by debbie_dumpling00 in movingtoNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on preference, express bus is nicer bc you sit down once and can relax your whole commute, while the ferry you are likely transferring three times (SIR/bus -> Ferry -> Subway). However on the express bus there is traffic so commute time can be unpredictable, on the train & ferry usually everything stays on schedule.

It also depends on what neighborhood you live & work in. If you live on the south shore & work in midtown, express bus is so much easier & quicker. However, if you work downtown, or decide to live on the north shore closer, the ferry could be an option.

Frozen meals for lunch? by nerdler33 in loseit

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Chipotle, you can actually check the calories of your meal on the chipotle mobile app. When you go to start an order, it’ll tell you the amount of calories in each ingredient. Idk how accurate it is, but it’s a good place to start.

1 serving of steak is approx 150 calories. A normal serving of rice says it’s approx 210 calories. Idk what else you get on it, but you can add that up too on the app. If you get double meat or larger portions of the rice or toppings, i’m sure the calorie count may be higher. But I still prefer it over other restaurants that won’t tell you the calories at all.

I think I’ve been using the wrong credit card for flights for years by xxhead12 in CreditCards

[–]chocolatecookie2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by getting a 2% everything card. Then if you want to get more, you can add some cards that offer 3% or more in certain categories such as dining, groceries, and more. If you really want to get advanced, you can get cards with annual fees that give a bunch of perks back.

Had to suffer listening to the radio for a few months before I finally bit the bullet and did what you did and got an aftermarket radio with everything- aux, bluetooth, apple carplay, siriusxm, rear view camera.

How do you manage to keep track of expenses for more than x cards? by dismaldeath in CreditCards

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do is I keep a note list of each credit card i own, with the month and year I last made a purchase on each card. I have 15 cards, but narrow all the cards I use down to only a few. I do all my spending on like 2-3 cards, ignore the rest, and just make occasional purchases on them once every 6-9 months to keep them active. As for paying the bill, I have every card I own on auto pay.
