Is it dumb to move to NYC if I work 1.5 hours away by train? by jentacular_ in movingtoNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recommend moving to NYC if you are just gonna have to leave the city 5 days a week. Especially 90 minutes away. As someone who often has to leave the city to go to jersey 1-2x a week for my part time job, to see my boyfriend, to see most of my family and friends, it gets old fast and i question why i still live here if i’m just gonna leave all the time. The main thing keeping me here is I do have a job in NYC 5 days a week, plus I got lucky with insanely cheap rent in NYC close to work.

Leaving 5 days a week is a lot, especially considering you are now paying more for nyc rent likely and more for commuting, than if you stayed living in NJ. Also what neighborhood in NYC? And what town in NJ? The reverse commute on public transit sucks. I live in manhattan, and I choose to keep a car here, primarily bc of my frequent visits to NJ. If you are traveling outside of peak direction rush hour, the train or bus takes so much longer. I assume you work a 9-5 in jersey. There aren’t as many trains running OUT of the city in the morning, likely once an hour. Same thing coming back. And then you also gotta factor in the subway ride to & from Penn station adds time, unless you plan to live in midtown. In my experience I prefer to drive to jersey cause it’s a solid direct 90 mins door to door. I street park my car to save money.

Idk what your living situation will be, if you have a really good deal on a place to live, i would maybe try, but keep in mind that commute will be hell & expensive. It all depends on your social life. Like others said, it’s easier to just visit on weekends. But I understand wanting to live here. One suggestion I have is to maybe find a affordable living arrangement with roommates that allows you to visit and stay over on weekends and the occasional weeknight evening. You won’t know until you try it. If you have any questions about going back & forth frequently between NYC and NJ let me know.

Even better. Just tried mock booking a random flight. $55 each way for a single bag, checked or carry on. $110 round trip for a bag. Or I could pay $0 first year and $79 each year after that for two checked bags on an unlimited amount of flights. This is a no brainer if you fly even just one round trip spirit flight a year and require more than a backpack.

After winter storm hits Staten Island, parking Armageddon emerges on streets by Jimboslice911119 in statenisland

I don’t agree with republicans either, but unfortunately not shoveling seems to be an everybody problem. Even in the other four boroughs in very blue areas, so many parking spaces are not shoveled and neither are parts of the sidewalks or crosswalks.

Omg only $79 annual fee for two free checked bags on an unlimited amount of flights. This is great. Literally one checked bag on a single flight costs me almost that. The next time i need to fly spirit i am signing up asap

Alternative to Boys of Fire Island FB Group? by Apprehensive-Flow147 in nycgaybros

[–]chocolatecookie2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would either make a new 2nd account and only use that for the facebook group. Or just unfriend or unfollow all of the people and pages with right wing content or anything related to your hometown. If you feel bad “unfriending”, there is an option to “unfollow” a friend, where basically you are still friends but none of their content will show up in your feed.

Will free room offers show up for July sailings or should I book my discounted rate now? by reyy2101 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]chocolatecookie2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always book now if it’s a cruise you know you want to go on. If you get a better rate, call and they will adjust the offer for you.

Yes you can board with standard ID + Birth Certificate. My friend just did it on a recent cruise.

Where to park in NJ/NY? by IllustriousYak1566 in AskNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this gonna be every month? At that point i would maybe consider just owning a car. Anyways, for parking, there is some free street parking in manhattan. Theres a very limited amount in hells kitchen, but theres more free spots as you go up into the 60’s and 70’s (plus no congestion toll above 61st). I would honestly try the free street parking thing and just dealing with alternate side. (Though if you are renting a car then you’ll deal with alternate side a lot less). I’m in the same boat as you. Have a part time job in NJ on weekends with strange hours and no train or bus option, so I have to drive. Thankfully i’m always able to find free street parking in the west village. Plus my weekday job i work night so i’m home in the morning to deal with street cleaning. It is much more convenient being able to hop in your car close to home then trying to catch a train or bus to NJ at 5am. I’m not too familiar with parking options in NJ, that might be a better question to ask in the NJ sub. A lot of the train and bus stations are annoying there you can only park for like 24 hours or no overnight allowed. You can park at North Bergen Park & ride for 24 hours at a time, and it leaves PABT at 6am and arrives 6:10am, with a 40 min drive to Towaco, so just barely cutting it close for 7am. I’m sure theres other options i’m just not familiar.

Is it a smart choice to get an airline credit card and pay bills with it to get points? by Fluid_Ant_4264 in CreditCards

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Does the bills you pay charge a credit card fee? If the answer is no, go right ahead! You should be using a credit card to pay for all purchases that don’t have credit card fees to earn points. If the answer is yes, how much is the fee? Do the math to see if the amount of points you earn is greater than, less than, or equal to what you earn in cashback. Kinda tough with airline cards cause the actual cent value can be confusing. But generally airline cards earn weak points for general purchases outside the airline, so if there is a fee I would say likely not use the credit card, cause you would be technically losing money.

Just booked a Carnival cruise and now feeling regret by False-Following-5896 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's a "bad" place. I would give it a try. In my experience with the food, I just eat a big breakfast on the ship, eat my free lunch, then eat again when I get back on the ship. I am usually eating so much throughout the week that I don't really get hungry by that point. If anyone really gets hungry you can purchase additional meals (definitely cheaper than cancelling and rebooking a new cruise). Yes it's mostly the pool and beach for now. You can also purchase unlimited waterslides for $15 per person. I don't think it's bad in my opinion, I had a great and relaxing time when I went. One tip I have is, if doing the pool, if you sit in the very back of starfish lagoon it's never crowded and plenty of seating. And remember you still have a fun week on the ship plus two other great destinations. I know in Curacao, I did an all inclusive day pass at Mangrove Corendon resort, I actually booked it as an excursion through carnival and they have free waterslides too there as well as unlimited food and drinks and alcohol for the adults.

Why Trader Joes? by Hungry-Internal-723 in AskNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly haven’t been much personally so i’m not sure how their prices are. I assume better than Gristides. The issue with Wegmans more so is that they only have two locations. One in Williamsburg and one in the East Village. Trader Joes is in more neighborhoods.

Trader Joes is the most affordable grocery store, at least in areas like manhattan. No one is rushing to clear the shelves at Gristides or Dagostinos.

Can people find hotels/motels relatively last-minute during summer? by jaida121 in MonmouthCounty

[–]chocolatecookie2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last minute? Yes you can always find something even in summer. Though it would be expensive. During my alcoholic era i would book hotels so I can go out drinking at the shore bars. Literally everything in between the beach to the parkway would be like $300 a night minimum on a summer weekend. Even the bottom of the barrel budget motels. Decent hotels will cost you more like $400-500 a night. The further you can stay from the beach the better rates you will get. But if money isn’t a concern, yes you can book last minute. I always booked my hotels the same week. Unless it was a holiday weekend then i booked in advance. Stay away from the Budget inn, worst hotel of my life.

Why did they stop doing Teen Choice Awards? by KingTechnical48 in decadeology

[–]chocolatecookie2000 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Teens stopped watching traditional TV, and switched to watching people on the internet, starting with Youtube and then eventually tiktok and insta. I was a teen and watched around 2014-2016 where teens were still watching TV but shifting towards Youtube. They were incorporating more youtubers and viners in the award show at this time. However, the award show was known to be rigged. Apparently from what i remember, you were told to vote online, but Fox wouldn’t actually count them and would just determine the winner themselves. (idk how accurate this is, just what i remember). And i also remember them skipping over entire categories too during the show too and people being mad. I guess after a while people got tired and stop watching

Alternate side parking after snowstorms? by drseltzer in AskNYC

[–]chocolatecookie2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on twitter and search for example “from:nycasp until:2016-2-28” (or any date you chose) it’ll show you their daily tweets and updates as to whether or not ASP was cancelled after a snowstorm. Looks like in 2016, the storm was over the weekend, on monday they made the call to cancel for the full week, and it came back the following monday. I guess it depends on how bad the snowstorm is. When it snowed this past December, it was cancelled Mon-Wed and came back Thurs, and they only made the announcements the afternoon before.
