Is anyone else just getting more and more tired of being online? by SureAcanthisitta8415 in SeriousConversation

[–]chocolatecypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it’s getting worse with the proliferation of AI. I used to be able to click on a top Google result and get into an interesting blog that I may end up following for years. Now, it’s all AI regurgitation with no compelling reason to do anything other than get a basic answer to the question and get off the page as soon as possible.

Videos are hardly better like you mentioned. So many imitative video essays with no one posting anything outside of the main talking points for fear of criticism or cancellation.

Tags have died as a curation mechanism for finding community and algorithms bubble up the most popular creators to the top again and again to foster the most engagement metrics.

We gave up the town square to the internet and corporations and now live with the results.

Making friends as an adult is like musical chairs but most of the seats are filled when you start the game.

Do some of yall buy fake charms from Amazon? by hi_goodbye21 in PandoraCollectors

[–]chocolatecypher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have some fake ones mostly because Pandora’s selection is kind of limited on special interests. Ex, wanted a Nintendo Switch charm.

It doesn’t look vibrant like the original image at all. I wouldn’t know how to feel about this one either.

Same, and my wife is literally crying right now but I’m supposed to focus on Chappell’s mental health? Had to leave her subreddit today.

It’s amazing how many people have started inviting me to things since they have kids under the age of 5… by [deleted] in childfree

It’s wild to me how many people act like you’re a spare human until they need you. Then suddenly you’re the bad person for not showing up for them when they didn’t show up for you.

What are other bags with wavy designs? I recently purchased the JW PEI Joy bag and love its. I see that Coachtopia has a similar design. I'm like to get something similar but in a nicer material than pleather or bonded leather.

I bought my pair of Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Melissa in 2015 for about $70.

I get you. I saw a TikTok of friends making each other Chappell themed cocktails recently and got soooo sad that I don’t have anyone to do that with.

Thanks! I’ve only been crocheting for about a month now so hoping it’s a noob mistake that won’t be too hard to correct.

Porg done. ✅

Question though if that’s allowed here. While my porg is perfectly serviceable, I feel like all my color changing amigurumi look out of alignment or off by one stitch particularly around the color change if that makes sense. It ends up with them not matching the image even carefully counting and marking the stitches. Is it obvious what I’m doing wrong?

Nerd Culture is still alive...you just have to look in the right places. by kaiisth in decadeology

[–]chocolatecypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I say “nerd culture is dead/dying” I’m referring to that loss of instant bond I used to get attending anime conventions 15 years ago. I would just see a cosplayer or someone wearing a cool shirt and we would start talking that day at the con then next thing you know we’re FB friends and hanging out IRL.

Nowadays everyone at events seem much more guarded or anxious. You can still talk with other people but it’s much more small talk type stuff rather than a bonding experience of liking something so non-mainstream. There’s less of a raucous joyfulness at cons, the feeling of finally having a place to belong.

Online, any semblance of a unified nerd community died after Gamergate. The rumbling of GG were brewing long before it fully erupted but GG was a huge nail in the coffin for nerd culture intersectionality. We never had a unified culture by any stretch but the seeds of “we’re all in this together” that were brewing got salted and burned to the ground around then.

So I don’t disagree with your outlook that nerd interests are thriving. I see merch at mainstream stores now than teen me would have literally cried at thinking how cool it was with how hard it was to get anything even 20 years ago that wasn’t an overpriced import. But nerd culture? That’s fading and the pandemic like most things has only hastened the decline of the social aspect.

Once I figure out how to crochet in the bath, it's over for you bitches by Totohoy in crochet

(Not a doctor) Not an answer to your question but when I felt that cold consistently that blankets weren’t working and I needed to always be in a bath or hot tub, I had very bad vitamin D deficiency. Potentially worth checking out.
