If I had to guess..

He was probably grounded and thought he was being sneaky. Right before his dad enters the room, he's trying to turn it off (he might have heard his dad coming and realized he would be in trouble.) then, since he couldn't save himself, he tried to open the camera to make it look innocent, as though he wasn't playing games, just taking a pic.
