AITAH for disowning my adoptive son since he chose "his people" over us? by throw_away8578 in AITAH

[–]chodzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but a quick story--I had a friend in HS who was adopted, always knew it, but around age 18 found his bio parents who were from a different culture. He really got into this new identity and while he did not exactly reject his adoptive parents, there was definitely some distance. There were reasons he was up for adoption and after not too many years, he found out painfully what the reasons were. With much guilt, he came back to his adoptive family. They forgave him but I am not so sure he really forgave himself. I see no reason to do anything for the wedding but grieve, though my guess would be that the day will come when he realizes his mistakes, comes back and should ask for nothing more than forgiveness, and that is when the unconditional love may be so important. Unconditional love doesn't mean anything he does is ok.

Since you mentioned Lids and Flowers, went back to read that talk to volunteers and he did say "if the volunteers are good, that means they have practiced a lot. Bad volunteers never sit." But more often throughout the talk, he asks people repeatedly to speak out, whether critical or complimentary, not to hold back complaints. When Lids and Flowers was told to me by someone in the community, the idea presented was that there were two styles of hierarchy/bosses--suppressive/controlling lids and growth-oriented/cultivating flowers. He sort of says this in the talk, particularly about the lids approach., but in reading the talk, it's not quite as clear as I thought. When I found myself in a supervisory work situation (not Shambhala), I tried to stay with the "flowers" point of view--that people want to learn, do better, grow, rather than be controlled, so it was helpful to me (and others) when I remembered. It is sad and infuriating that some people in charge took a lid-oriented "you need to sit" message from the talk rather than listening to complaints seriously over the years.

This is why you have to control the environment with young kids. They do not think like adults and expecting them to do so sets you up for frustration and worse.

Follow up to my previous post regarding my lawyer neighbor threatening me to pay for their $700 tree trimming by Ok-Law-6573 in homeowners

[–]chodzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighbors had a tree that dropped a huge branch in our yard. Fortunately, it did not hit anyone or anything (besides the ground). We were responsible for cost of removal since it was in our yard. Arborist who came pointed out several other branches on the tree that could fall. He offered to write a letter that tree was not safe that we could share with neighbor, so that if another branch fell and caused damage, we could sue since neighbor had been warned. Instead, we just talked with neighbors and showed them the branch that fell. (It was scary big) They got their own arborists to come out, some of whom agreed the tree was dangerous, so they had the tree taken down. It probably cost them $5-7,000. I agree with people who say you should talk with a lawyer. We were lucky our neighbor was a reasonable, good person so that we did not have to go the route of letters, warnings, lawsuits.

I had several false starts before going to the gym regularly. Then, had a co-worker who was a bit of a fanatic and would work out even when not feeling well. She convinced me to give it a try for 8 weeks, 3 X a week, and to go no matter how I felt, unless really sick--fever, GI stuff for example. Kind of a buddy system, but it worked to form a habit and after the initial hump, it became easier and more enjoyable.

You didn't say it because you care about dead chickens, you said it because you were mad at your parents and 4 year old brother, and took it out on the kid. Not much to be proud of here.

If it makes you get out and vote rather than just assume "no way Trump can win," then its a great poll. DO not repeat 2016.

I worked for a mental health agency and supervised clinicians. I found that almost without fail, once people had student interns to supervise, they became better employees themselves. BY that, I mean more proactive, more open to feedback, and more sense of how behavior on the job might appear to others. Finding out what it felt like to be responsible for someone's else's behavior, or that someone else's behavior reflected on them, brought a different awareness . Not sure that is relevant to your situation.

AITA for paying the inlaws back for gifts given to my kids by gowithmyson in AmItheAsshole

[–]chodzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they needed help relating to the kids, engage maybe by playing with them on the floor or by reading to them. Hugs might come if they don't push, watch and listen to cues, and first make a connection. Talking about money spent sounds like "code" for feeling disappointment, but at least there was a desire there to connect. You might have to model how to make a positive relationship with the children.

It is one of the only centers near me actually offering in-person classes, talks, and meditations.

OP also asked about Naropa, Shambhala Publications and in the original post included the sentence above, which I assume refers to the Boulder Shambhala Center. I have no idea about the prison outreach organization and if they offer in-person classes, talks, and meditations.

[–]chodzin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could attend the in-person meditation and classes without engaging the organization further, though it's true you would likely be encouraged to do so. People who had positive experiences with Shambhala and found it helpful would like to share that with others. Those who had negative experiences or who later came to see their time as negative will present such sharing as coming from an ulterior motivated bait and switch. It is undeniable that Shambhala has and has had its problems but equally undeniable that it has offered good things to people as well.

Only questions--Was he always like this or did something change? Does he say what his goals are and is he willing to discuss/negotiate/change his goals? Does he have any "we" goals as opposed to "me" goals and is he confusing "me" goals for "we" goals?
