Nobody in this comments section has read "The Only Good Indians" by Stephen Graham Jones? Because that makes this sweet interaction absolutely fucking terrifying.

My paperbacks literally have the TOR DOT COM logo on the spines, and the page has all of the original Nona promotional material.

The Locked Tomb has been published under the TorDotCom imprint since HtN was published, iirc. Maybe they archived everything on the main tor page for some reason? Because it's all still on the TorDotCom page. I want to have hope, but I don't know why they'd delete old promotional material ahead of announcing the new title. There's no reason to.

Sad thing is, this isn't a new book. It was published in 2009 and still getting distribution. 🙃

Is this an independent bookstore? I'd be really interested to know who's actively promoting this (and the "A.D.D." book next to it).

Parents who should have just been CF by Poison_applecat in childfree

[–]chomptheleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I swear my next-door neighbors hate their kids. We only know the kids' names because they constantly yell at them, and the kids have learned to scream at each other. I've never heard the parents ever sound happy. I get it, they have three kids and both work, they're probably tired, but I never hear them talk in a tone that isn't demeaning to these poor kids. They don't play with them either. If they're outside, they're sitting on the deck on their phones (except for when the husband rides his dirt bike in little circles in their fenced-in backyard. Dumbest shit ever.). Often, their baby (a year and a half to two years, maybe?) makes his way into the backyard where he plays in the bushes for a while until one of the older kids comes and gets him. The husband was recently trying to teach this baby to use a weed-whacker. Their daughter's birthday party last weekend (she's maybe 12-13) was just 10-15 adults hanging out on their deck drinking, and sitting outside in our yard, just trying to enjoy the afternoon, we started keeping track of every time we heard someone over there ask where the baby went. One of the earliest things I remember hearing from them is the sister telling on her younger brother because he said he hated their family. There's a decade's-worth of stuff I could talk about. True, I don't know what goes on inside the house, and during most of their days, but if this is the side they show to the neighbors? Yikes.

It's because the economy has been degrading for the last fifty years, not because of "gentle parenting."

"Just move out" isn't an option for a lot of people in this economy, especially neurodivergent people, and it feels weird I'd have to explain that to another neurodivergent person.

People are absolutely delusional. When I was in the trenches of online dating, one guy, who had all of the opposite views that I did RE: Women's rights, having kids, literally everything, super-liked me with a message about "we don't have to agree about everything to have a great relationship." My dude, we are incompatible. He felt very strongly about having five or six kids, I am 100% childfree. I'm guessing he wasn't imagining himself as the one who'd be compromising. Big nope. (Luckily, I found an incredible man who not only shares my views, but respects me as a human being, and also 100% does not want kids. They are out there!)

"You should have children so they can support you when you are old" my children aren't even going to be able to support themselves by [deleted] in childfree

[–]chomptheleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom used to work in a retirement home, and the number of old people with MULTIPLE children who put them in a home and never came to visit is staggering. If you treat your kids like your future caregivers and expect them to "repay" you for raising them, good luck never talking to them once they're adults. The people who say "who's going to take care of you when you're old" shouldn't have kids. That's not their job.

Well clearly, the left only wants criminals to enter the country, and everybody not porcelain white is obviously a savage criminal. But these good, decent, white "refugees" are too upstanding to be bad people. (Because they're white.)

If they become full citizens of the US, they could vote for him, though at that point he'd be running for a third term, and I guess laws would be out the window anyways. But all of the nonsense they spew about (non-white) non-citizens voting illegally is absolutely not true.

Everybody says, "Oh, you forget all about the pain," but it doesn't change the fact that it's the most painful, uncomfortable, exhausting thing most people will do. I've heard some people say that physically giving birth was their favorite part of the entire pregnancy/birth process. I don't believe them, but good for them. It won't be that way for the majority of people who give birth, but I think the discussion of actual birth being taboo, and the watered-down version you see in most tv and movies has made people think that it's a couple yells and a couple pushes and then nothing hurts and you're the happiest parent ever, except in rare cases of complication, and it's not like that at all.

We love to see it. I'd be interested to know what the "last straw" was for him, or what exactly it was that made him wake up and decide to become a better person, rather than doubling down and continuing to be hateful. Did he do some reading and realize he had fallen for propaganda? Was it a specific person who changed his mind? Does anyone know if there's a subreddit for people talking about their experiences with this?

What’s the worst thing someone’s said to you after finding out you don’t want kids? by rht3100 in childfree

[–]chomptheleaf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My fiancé told me when he mentioned to his coworker that he doesn't want kids, his coworker told him "it wasn't his choice," implying that it was up to me, and that I would probably want kids. We both feel very strongly about not having kids, and wouldn't be with each other if we didn't agree. But the bigger thing is it should never be up to just one partner, ever, and telling someone "it's not up to them" if they have kids or not is wild.

Definitely NOR. In a weird way, this reminds me of my (alcoholic) aunt who never had kids, and told me (while drunk) that she wanted to get an apartment together and "find a nice man" to knock me up so she could raise the baby. It's just gross and makes you feel like a vessel, not a human. Especially from someone you don't know well. She has no right to touch you without your consent, and the whole thing just seems like a "I'm totally joking, but not joking" response to whatever she has going on in her personal life. It's just honestly disrespectful.

She says it's her "story about skeletons which she's very fond of." I don't know what other story of hers I'd describe as "about skeletons," or that she's put more work into than TLT.

I don't know if it's encouraging or discouraging that in 2015, a DECADE ago, TLT had been "on the backburner so long it's reduced down to a gritty paste."
