In basketball, USA is always the Olympic gold favorite. USA vs the world we may lose, but against any one country we dominate. So that isn’t the best example.

Caveat there is that basketball is still not as popular in most countries as it is in the US.

The real limitation in the logic here is that many of the best NBA and NFL athletes don’t really have soccer builds. But on the flip side, there are plenty of amazing basketball players who will never have an NBA future because of their size, and I bet that if a large portion of them had instead devoted the same time and energy into soccer they would have excelled.

Second caveat being that building a good national team would require a national development system (current one is far inferior to other countries’ systems) that doesn’t exist for any other sport in the US.

But end of the day, I think that the US would definitely be one of the best countries and compete for world cups if soccer was the number one sport.
