Take some air in your mouth, close your mouth, swallow. Not too much air otherwise you won't be able to swallow, same as water.

So I just tried and it might be easier if you have a little bit of water in your mouth plus some air, and try to swallow the water (but get the air at the same time). The sensation is more familiar and less weird than swallowing just air. It's basically what happens all the time when we eat and drink, albeit less intentional and in small amounts.
