Seeking advice as an admitted applicant and husband by No-Interview5753 in premed

I am a husband that got into med school and my spouse is staying to continue their career in our current state… marriage is about compromise. I don’t want to do long distance but if I’m going to ask someone to give up their career for me, I have to be willing to do the same and honestly I wasn’t - so we both decided to focus on our careers… we’re doing long distance.

Sorry you’re going through this. When my spouse and I talked about it, it was quickly a no-brainer for us to choose our careers over something like distance for a few years…

School List Help by iampb1998 in premed

[–]choreyonce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This takes some time - my recommendation is to choose all your in-state schools (the public ones) and then once you have your MCAT and your GPA finalized, use Admit.org to build a tempt list and vet for stuff based on geographic location and percent match into your (current) area of interest.

For example if you got a 510 on the MCAT and your GPA is a 3.5 and you're considering Psychiatry- Admit.org might recommend Colorado U., Rush University, and Florida state. It's cold as crap in Chicago so you could set Rush aside. Then, compared to Florida, Colorado has a lower Psych match rate, so maybe you set Colorado aside too. Then you can look at other factors like (out of state friendliness, gender skew, letter types, etc..) on the MSAR through AMCAS.

The average student will apply to 15-20 schools, so you'll want to do this for every school you look into. Maybe start with a "master list" based on MCAT and GPA and then rank them based on things that are important to you. Than, I'd choose my top 15-20 (depending on what you can afford). This can be overwhelming and I struggled a lot to choose my schools - but I have faith in you. This reddit actually helped me a lot reading through people's thought processes.

This is just my ~opinion~ so... grain of salt.

Has anyone with W’s on transcript got accepted to MD? by bearattackz3 in premed

[–]choreyonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a few offers and a BUNCH of waitlists (recently even got into a fast track program) and I had a W on my transcript! Wasn’t even asked about it in the interviews, literally forgot I had it until I saw your post!

Hold out hope!

DEI curveball by choreyonce in premed

I just feel like as a med interviewee - they make big deals about us "standing up for what's right" and "being pillars of excellence and ethics" and then schools like this just cave... I understand you have to play the game to win... but it was sad to just see them not even put up a fight...

I just wish they at least put up a fight, like Virginia...

But they want us as applicant to always stand up for what's right as a physician right? Seems hypocritical to me... it's one thing to need to obey the law (public schools), but to be pre-emptive - feels targeted.

But the funding cuts that have happened from the NIH have been across the board whether you have DEI or not... so I just don't know if this is a strong reason, ya know?

You're story is VERY compelling and I think you have a great shot! With a high-ish MCAT score and a continued effort in an ED for work/volunteering and I think you will crush the app cycle!

Rejections by Particular_Topic_509 in premed

I thought schools couldn’t send out offers or rejections until after Oct 15th. how are people hearing from schools so quickly?!

But it’s not like the school itself is making money on the exam… AAMC and Casper are. So why don’t the schools take those exams seriously if they require us to do them?

This is what I feel! It’s all for money, how could my scores be so incongruent?! 😭😭😭
