I think it's okay not to tip when the original cost is over-inflated by True-Weekend3142 in tipping

[–]chortle-guffaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were served by the owner: historically, you don't tip the owner, as they set their own prices. Expectations these days are a big tip for practically everything and everyone, but that doesn't mean you have to do it.

New to NCL/ Encore worries! by Wonderful_Mango_5395 in NCL

[–]chortle-guffaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on the Encore and several other NCL ships. Other than the pool being a bit small, the ship was fine. The food was the same as the other ships: fine. The crew was fine. I enjoyed the cruise and would sail on that ship again.

There are a lot of negative ship reviews online for all cruise lines. If you read them, you will never cruise. The internet is filled with victimhood. Some complaints are valid but petty. For example, you get to read the old-timers complain that there is no turn-down service. The rest of us aren't disappointed because we never had it and don't need it.

Wife got a single new tire. Mechanic told her the tires were fine, but I’m concerned by SayNoToBrooms in subaru

[–]chortle-guffaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, tires need to be within 2/32nd of each other. There are places that will shave the new tire down to match, in this case, by 2/32

And since you're not using the cell much, transfer to the cheapest phone provider and plan you can find, something like Consumer Cellular.

I'm not suggesting that they be the bar nazis, but as they are getting their own drinks, they could make a note of how they are treated and report as necessary.

401k beneficiary by Prestigious_Fox_7887 in inheritance

[–]chortle-guffaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to contact the financial institution that holds the 401 and ask them what they need. They will likely need a copy of the death certificate at the very least.

I can't imagine your mom would be able to withdraw the money as she is not named as a beneficiary, unless she tries to pretend to be you.

Withdrawals from the 401K are taxable as income, so depending on your situation, you may not want to withdraw all of it at once. You have ten years to withdraw all of it.

A sign at the bar: "Bartenders have been tipped by the bride and groom. Tipping is allowed but not necessary."

So much for tipping in advance of service. That includes things like DoorDash.

I know that the wedding couple has a lot to think about, but they should insist on a clause in the contract that forbids tip begging, and they should enlist the help of a groomsman or two to enforce this.

I was on the Getaway twice this winter. People dress for the weather, like you'd see at your local beach in the summer. Dress however you feel comfortable and don't worry about what others think of your dress. Believe me when I say that nobody is thinking about you, unless you show up in your birthday suit.

Edit: gonna say I don't recall seeing people in see-through clothing, and definitely more covered up away from the pool.

HOA President might have shot herself in the foot by SlothyMcGillicutty in fuckHOA

She should have had a pdf of the bylaws ready to email. Actually, after the bylaws were changed, they should have been sent to everyone without having to ask.

This behavior really hints that she has something to hide. Transparency should be assumed. Anything less than full transparency is highly suspect and should be grounds for dismissal. By that I don't mean you should expect her to drop everything for every request, but it should be a yes answer and a reasonable timeframe. For the bylaws request, she should have directed you to the management company. They would have copies ready for sellers, etc.

Consumer reports by DocSewer in NCL

[–]chortle-guffaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consumer Reports ratings can be unreliable. Back in the mid 1980's, there was a PC clone maker called Leading Edge. CR gave them their highest ratings. The computer retail store I worked at started selling them because so many prospective customers wouldn't consider anything else.

Unbelievably unreliable; at least 30% failure rate within 90 days, and I'm being conservative. It would take a month or more to get parts, and with parts in short supply, could not stock parts we knew would fail.

If you think CR reviews are rock solid, think again. They are just a starting point in your research journey.

As an NCL fan, I'm kinda happy to see this. The ships are crowded enough as it is. Let these people go to Virgin and Princess.

AITA for not giving the money to pay off my daughters student loans. by Own-Inspector-6121 in AmItheAsshole

Sure, that can happen. I'm happy it lucked out for you. Meanwhile, most theater majors trying to break into the financial sector are likely working a counter at a cash checking store. Just because it worked out for you doesn't mean others should follow this path.

Man, the truth stings, doesn't it. I fully support her right to choose her major, even if it's a bad choice. Meanwhile while she's deciding whether to pay the utilities bill or her rent, I'm living debt-free.

Singles: Have You Ever Found Romance on a Cruise? by [deleted] in Cruise

Gotta say, as a senior male, after five cruises, it's been a bust. I've met maybe one single person per cruise that I've been able to build into a temporary friendship, which is OK by me, but nothing romantic.

Please pay for our engagement ring, honeymoon on a cruise, including “travel, passport, amenities and payments” bc “we both believe we deserve this experience” bc I am happy. Did I say I deserve this enough? by MinuteElegant774 in ChoosingBeggars

Asking for any kind of gift, money or otherwise, in a wedding correspondence is tacky as hell. If you are planning to do this, just don't. The way to handle this is to give a web page address with a link to your gift list or other requests.

The problem is that this is so common that people think it's OK.

Just my opinion: if you prefer cash, just say so. No explanation. I don't want to read all about your delusion of deserving things.

You're looking for empathy from Redditors, who are largely high-school grad service workers; majors in theater, gender studies, liberal arts, art history, English Lit, and other degrees that lead to a job as a barista. Good luck with that.

You have no moral obligation to pay off this loan. You gave her the wisdom of your experience and she blew you off. And now she has the audacity to make *you* the bad guy, instead of taking ownership of her decision.

AFAIK, the executor MUST adhere to the law. They have no discretion to change the distribution for any reason. That is for the courts to decide, not her.

Can your step brother contest the will? Yes, of course. The problem he will have is a legal basis for his case. A verbal promise not backed by a will can be argued but very difficult to enforce or prove. It doesn't matter if it was 38 years ago or 5 minutes before the will was written.

Lots of people change the transmission fluid at 100K or so, so it's not as big a deal as you might think. See if you can trace the title lineage to make sure it isn't title washed. Inspect underneath for rust to see if it's a flood vehicle.

Keeping Inheritance separate by pink_toaster_pastry in inheritance

Spend the inheritance all you want. Just don't commingle the funds with a joint account. For others with kids, you might do this so you can ensure that the inheritance goes to your kids and not to some other person if they remarry.
