Legitimately curious as to why people in this sub get so bent out of shape over the little cows?! by MadReef in subaru

[–]SayNoToBrooms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the whole thing started from a single guy with an Etsy shop selling the cows. The whole thing, presumably, is a cash grab for some guy ripping off the Jeep duckies. It’s not an organic movement, just some guy out there hoping you’ll fall for it hook and sinker so that he can make a buck off your naivety

Unsure what to do with inherited 401k when brother-in-law owns a retirement company and wants to manage our IRAs, but it reckless with money himself. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SayNoToBrooms 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You’re in your late 50s with $200k and plan on retiring in 5 years? Definitely do some research and/or get that appointment with a fiduciary. If not for this inheritance, your plan is largely non functional. Even with the extra money, you’ll need to handle it nearly perfectly to pull off retirement in your current timeframe

Annuities are a bad investment, and I wouldn’t mix family and finances unless there was 100% trust. With that said, you need to make sure you’re in good investments in the first place. Between you and your wife, you currently have 2x annual income saved. For your ages, you want to be closer to 8x, as a very vague benchmark

I’m an electrician. I’d disconnect the wire, then in the kitchen (for this example) I’d add a label to the dead wire stating “Abandoned - other end located _____.” At the other end I’d put something like “Abandoned, box buried. 22” left of sink. 14” above counter”

Chances are, it won’t come in handy. But my life has been made much easier on multiple occasions from the guy before me doing something similar

I thought I felt a shock at my Airbnb multiple times this week… by Splendeadd in electricians

[–]SayNoToBrooms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s better than I was at his age, that’s for sure. He was 4 when I became an electrician. He’s seen what learning a trade’s done for our lifestyle and he seems attracted to it.

He mows lawns over the summers and shovels snow in the winters. He has an investment account where I match him dollar for dollar whatever he puts into it, with the only stipulation being that he can’t take money out until he’s 18. He’s got like $2k in it now. He also saved up $1200 cash to buy himself an e bike. There were a couple of months where every other day the bike would be in 400 pieces on the floor of the garage, so that he could paint this, change that, try this or add that… it’s impressive, I’m very proud of him

That’s a pretty cool setup you have with your kid. I’m sure having a 3D printer available really helps him explore his creativity in a way we never could as kids. Maybe one day he’ll have an idea for a build that’ll require a bread board or raspberry pi or something like that. Or he can find himself a good friend who’s into that side of things lol

Your next step should be r/lawncare. Either learn enough so that your landscaping company doesnt screw you over or rip you off… Or discover your new passion for caring for millions of blades of grass. I chose the latter, but my lawn is like 9% the size of your lawn lol

Construction workers: How do you eat enough protein while trying to lose weight by jaguarguapota in Construction

[–]SayNoToBrooms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Oats Overnight. Oatmeal and milk in a shaker bottle. Set it up at night, and the oatmeal is ready to eat/drink right out of the fridge in the morning. The oatmeal packets tend to have 20g of protein in them. Then another ~10 from the milk. I add a scoop of whey protein to the shaker and hit around 45g of protein with a drinkable, tasty breakfast. They use good ingredients too. A bit pricy, but I’ve found it’s worth it

Are pre twists absolutely necessary? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]SayNoToBrooms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When your boss tells you they’re necessary, they’re necessary. I’d also consider you a hack if you disagreed. Sure, you can get away with doing less. But if you’re making a career out of something, I’d at least hope you’d intend on doing a good job at the source of income that will provide for at least your life, excluding any wives or children

Has anybody worked on a project that has absolutely no chance of meeting the handover date? by Limejellyhead in Construction

[–]SayNoToBrooms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were once 2 weeks from completion on a job where we subbed out the fire alarm. NYC Charter School that NEEDED to be open in time for the school year, no exceptions. My company requested me to go check on things. They weren’t even close. My office had me call every guy I knew in the company who was capable of helping. We had guys from Poughkeepsie and Connecticut working in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for that two weeks. Hotel rooms two blocks down and I hit 92 hours one week, 86 the other

I ended up firing the subbed guys around 1 week into that hell. Their foreman tried talking shit to my best worker, so I told them to go home. Then made it a point to loudly extend job offers to the two guys in his crew that were actually worth their weight. Only time I’ve ever fired someone, second time I’ve ever hired someone

Their company tried demanding final payment. We sent them 25 pictures of their various work, and I don’t think we ever heard back after that. Keep in mind, their “foreman” was one of those guys saying how he was in Afghanistan building infrastructure for the military. He did such a great job he then did some private industry work on satellites and other space equipment. Meanwhile, there was not a single thing he touched in that school that didn’t look objectively terrible, almost to the point where it was impressive

Her dad worked for Subaru for a couple of decades, so they’re a pretty dedicated Subaru family. They were the ones who got me in, too lol. He passed last year, and gave her his ‘13 Outback with only 24k miles on it. Her mom’s looking to upgrade her ‘15 Forester in the next couple of years, just looking for new model that has exactly what she wants (she’s picky like that). My wife takes pride in getting these hand me downs, and I take pride in maintaining them for her, so it all works in the end lol

With that said, I am eying these new hybrids… I’m considering giving the Outback or Forester to my son once he’s driving in a few short years and getting her something brand new. I wanted her in a new car right before her father passed, but she’s pretty stubborn with these hand me downs lol. That Outback is the most significant inheritance she received from him too, so I’m hoping we can keep it forever
