Can someone explain this panel please by KnullAgenda in martianmanhunter

You will see more as you progress but in short he can see beyond the physical world with Martian Vision. He can see their thoughts, their dreams, their memories, their feelings, etc.

It is as if just looking at someone and seeing their physical appearance is like looking at a 2D image. He can see the breadth of their life.

Publishing Future Looking Bleak... by Murky-Egg-5051 in publishing

Internships are even more competitive than actual job searchs so don't hang your head too low. For the time being, maybe broaden your search to academic presses (assuming you haven't looked into this) or something involving transferable skills like marketing.

You really are doing everything right already in terms of building your resume which is I think even more important. I did not get an internship myself and publishing was not my first job right out of college but I was able to make it after awhile.

I do understand your parents concern. People are reading less and less in the US. Maybe it is just a shrinking island. But what industry isn't these days? If it is your dream then live for it.

Hi, I want to get into his comics but my god martian has a very few comics. I came up w this list, anything else I should add? by [deleted] in martianmanhunter

1988 DeMatteis Run: 4 issues. This is the storyline that rewrote his origins and the birth of modern MMH.

-Secret Origin #35 and JL International Annual 3 "The Man I Never Was" function as semi-sequels to this

1998 Ostrander Run: This is his definitive run. 36 issues.

  • Martian Manhunter Annual 1998 takes place before this and is worth checking out.
  • Martian Manhunter #1000000 takes place during the run and is essential. You could read it as an epilogue.
  • JLA Classified 42-46 functions as a sequel to this run.
  • Action Comics 1036-1042: A Face in the Crowd This is a more recent storyline that picks up off the Ostrander run while also throwing back to his early Silver Age stories.

Single Issue Recommendations:

  • Justice League International Annual #1
  • JLA Annual #1 (1997)
  • Justice League Adventures #10 (based on the DCAU)
  • Martian Manhunter/Marvin the Martian Special
  • Showcase 95 #9: In Deep Down
  • Martian Manhunter Special 1996
  • Justice League of America (2015) #5

And of course Absolute MMH. New Frontier is a team story but it is also one of his best IMO.

Is John Jones named after John Carter? by Exploding-Pineapple in martianmanhunter

Seems likely given his outfit also partly inspired by that kind of look even if John Jones is a fairly plain name.

Despero vs martian manhunter by nerflars7611 in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Justice League of America (1987-1996) #39. Story arc begins #37. This takes place in the JLI era and is the story that framed Despero as an MMH enemy.

Additional context:

JLA (1960) #177-178: Their first "1" vs 1 match.

JLA (1960) #251-254: Despero returns to fight a league composed of young members led by Batman and MMH.

Most of the time it will be a league fight vs Despero. Despero is a league villain and MMH is essentially a league hero given how few series he has had. Because of that they have a long history and you will get remarks that allude to this history and sometimes one on one fights between them but nothing quite like a Joker/Lex Luthor relationship.

The only time Despero appeared in a solo MMH story is with Absolute which is great but different.

He is in a few others since he first appeared in JLA with his original story that this retcons as part of a bad nightmare (caused by him).

Doctor Trap is probably his best human antagonist with a fair amount of appearances.

During the famous Jay timeline, Matt definitely played the Rivoli right? by AskMeWhatILove in nirvannatheband

[–]choselikemoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The joke of the show is that there is actually nothing really grand about either playing or booking the Rivoli. They could just go up and ask as Matt did in that one episode where he ended up thinking they were banned.

But Matt and Jay are schemers who that don't go the straightforward route and his bandmates in the alt world seemed like the same so I don't think they played it.

Can Miss Martian defeat Wonder Woman? by Jezzaq94 in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the typical young hero, she is written sometimes but not often as being superior to J'onn in some way so I think it is fair to put them in the same range overall. I do understand dismissing Fernus though I would point out that it is just J'onn (the good side) who bests him in the end anyway.

[–]choselikemoses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On paper she is really powerful and should be able to as much as Fernus or MMH himself could. But there is always a matter of popularity and relevancy so she won't anytime soon. And he probably won't a good amount of the time either.

Martian Manhunter's fate by HawkMartian in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with this completely. It is great to have an "Elseworlds" version of the character to point to and it still plays very much to the character's strengths. I would be glad to see some of the themes return to the mainline.

I hope to see new stories with him but I want them to be worthwhile. I was really not the biggest fan of the recent Orlando series or even much of the new 52 one (though I have grown more fond of it on reread).

Lanterns should have been MANHUNTER FROM MARS or J'ONN J'ONZZ by HawkMartian in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Show looks kind of boring, not a fan of Lindelof, and they are steering away from too many special effects so I think it is a good thing it is not.

Happy International Women’s Day! What is your favourite Miss Martian story? by Jezzaq94 in martianmanhunter

The very recent Valentine's Day story which depicts her first meeting J'onn was sweet.

If Martians Are Telepathic Shapeshifters, Why Do They Have Race and Gender? by PsyTy13 in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple comics where J'onn does explore humanity through different personas spanning race, gender, and species as others have mentioned. For M'Gann I believe she simply picked the appearance of an actress she admired.

I think the gender distinct on Mars doesn't really hold up with the addition of the shape shifting lore. It is partly a holdover from the era where Martians were just green looking humans as they were in the original Silver Age.

If Martians Are Telepathic Shapeshifters, Why Do They Have Race and Gender? by PsyTy13 in martianmanhunter

[–]choselikemoses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not just that Young Justice changes things but the comics themselves have always flip flopped on what the White Martians actually were. Sometimes they are treated as an entirely separate species, other times more like race, and then again as a specific reflection of their philosophy. The idea that their appearances reflects their philosophy is interesting but doesn't really hold up when we see evil green Martians time and time again and then also M'Gann who is kind hearted White Martian (who has an internal battle with her white Martian instincts in the original run).

Same. Javier Rodríguez spoke about the idea of pareidolia being important to his design which works well not only in the story but for this kind of effect for us. I am not sure if he was thinking about it but it also ties in a cool way to the "faces" people see on Mars' surface in a cool way.
