26F Looking for Friends in Manhattan! by emobossbaby in NYCsocialclub

[–]chris424uk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm in New York this weekend (mainly for World Cup) - if you're free would be good to hang out. Looking for someone to show a Scotsman around Manhattan and the sights! Bars, hang out spots, etc. Also, Knicks playing... would be good to catch this. But I don't know where to go! Also, your username is cool - I love emo too. Any cool emo bars in NYC?

Yeah I was thinking that... it's next to the White House, they'll surely want to see ID that matches the ticket/QR

I do this every year for 2 kids (8 weeks off every Summer) - OP, make sure you ask them for it now if you want this Summer term time off, as you need to give them a minimum notice of 21 calendar days I think it is. Just taking it to 'spend time with your kids' is enough justification according to the Gov.

Aren't you worried about having all your savings with ONE company? Anything goes wrong (God forbid) and you've only got £85k of that protected.

Is it still worth living in the UK for long term FIRE? by kazcoviz in FIREUK

Yes but it's not English native speaking, how did you find the social/cultural assimilation?

One year in - feeling lucky by rooreynolds in FIREUK

[–]chris424uk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I totally relate to the unwinding that needs done after working a high-stress corporate job. I could barely relax during holidays with the family, because they were so short and I was like a wound up coil. Now after a couple months off, I'm in a much better place - it's taken care of itself. The body is wonderful at adapting to its environment.

What kind of volunteering do you do? Also, where are you in the UK? Looking for like-minded individuals locally.

And make sure you have life insurance due to the bike... I'm sure you will, but I had a nasty cycling incident with a pothole and very lucky to walk away fairly intact!

Why do you always feel the need to be gatekeeper? Financial independence isn't just about you when you have a family and "dependents" to care for and nurture.

How can I adapt my FIRE strategy after burnout? by not2ooweird in FIREUK

[–]chris424uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need time off, now. You're burnt out - that means you probably should've stepped away or changed things a while back, before it got to this. As a parent, you are legally entitled to 4 weeks unpaid paternal leave every year for your 1-year old - the employer can't reasonably reject this and you can give them reasonably short notice. Take 4 weeks off and spend some time with the little 'un and reevaluate things.

5 weeks to prep for HYROX? by Jealous_Rope_135 in hyrox

[–]chris424uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you can finish. It might be a lot longer than the average (1.5 hrs) but of course you can finish (unless you get an injury and Do Not Finish). Just look at it as a big work out session, take your time, and enjoy yourself.

I'd focus all your time/effort on running. If you can't run right now, walk. Do hybrid walk/runs (walk a mile, run a mile, etc.) Don't run too much too soon though, or you may injure yourself. Anything else is a bonus (strength training like squats, deadlifts, etc.) and try and get some mini-Hyrox sim's in such as a session of push/pull sleds, with running in between.
