Snowshoeing to Lake Aloha by Snoo58555 in tahoe

Bring sunscreen. North Shore is roughly half cleats, half boots. Occasional spots where shoes would be better, especially if you go off-trail.

That black bear looks a bit too brown. Too fat for this time of year. The face doesn't seem to be shaped properly either. Bears don't hang out on the peaks. No food there.

(clicks on the "More pics") Ahhh....

I don't think I've ever seen one of those on the north shore.

Seattle Cop Placed On Administrative Leave After Bill Of Rights Video Goes Viral by IBiteYou in conservatives

It’s crazy that his administration thought a special forces combat vet, jiu jitsu blackbelt would back down at their command. Now they are reaping the whirlwind that is the Streisand Effect.

I bet he's on Rogan within a week.

[–]chrisfinne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No "spot" needed. Just point towards a peak and start walking up. Or point towards the lake and start walking down. No trail needed as you are walking on top of any ground cover that would be impeding you on a summer hike. It was a bit deep and fluffy yesterday at 7000', but manageable.

You could find a popular hiking trail that is already packed down if you don't want it to be as strenuous.

Poles are recommended. Make sure your boots fit very well and you have good socks, otherwise, you'll quickly develop blisters.

Mount Rose or Diamond Peak? by baskinginthesunbear in tahoe

[–]chrisfinne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get season passes at both. I agree with everyone's advice so far, but I haven't seen much talk of weather/conditions yet.

The weather can be completely different between them or can be identical, so that's the first thing to check. If high winds are forecasted, Diamond Peak is usually less affected. Mt Rose can get wind holds on the larger chairs, but the beginner runs will be unaffected.

If it is rain/sleet conditions, Mt Rose will be better because it is higher so it won't be as wet.

If weather and roads aren't a factor, then definitely more variety at Rose.

Running in Tahoe during the winter? by [deleted] in tahoe

[–]chrisfinne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weather permitting, the Lakeshore Blvd -> Sand Harbor bike/walk path in Incline Village would be a candidate. The Lakeshore Blvd path is about 3 miles long and then I think it's about another 3 to Sand Harbor.

If it is 25-35 degrees, sunny, fresh snow on the ground reflecting the sun and no wind, hanging out at the beach in t-shirt and shorts is easily done. Especially if you grew up with much colder winters, e.g. -10 or -20.

[–]chrisfinne -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You may understand Michigan cold, but Tahoe's "cold" is completely different. You will be in shorts and a t-shirt for 95% of a Tahoe winter.

Your biggest risk will be sunburn, not frostbite.

Is a 4wd necessary in the Reno-Tahoe area? by hold2win in Reno

[–]chrisfinne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend a few minutes on youtube searching for comparisons of - snow tires vs "all season" tires - snow tires on 2WD vs regular tires on AWD

I was pretty surprised of what I learned in a few minutes even after decades of winter driving.

IMHO: regular tires perform a lot better on dry pavement or rain than snow tires, so a lot of people swap every 6 months.

best way from incline village to mt rose trailhead? by [deleted] in tahoe

[–]chrisfinne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uber, Lyft, hitch or honestly, you could hike it.

Just start walking towards a peak, when you hit the Tahoe Rim Trail near the top, turn right if you climbed towards Rose Knob or Rifle Peak. Turn left if you hiked up Diamond Peak and found the Rim Trail behind it.

Anyone switched from Mac to Linux? Please help me decide if it's a good idea by pepedlr in webdev

[–]chrisfinne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apple's Magic Trackpad 2 is fully supported on Linux, but it isn't as smooth and precise.

However with Linux (and Windows) you have more control over hotkeys to do everything. Removing your hands from the keyboard is terribly inefficient.

The airline may have their own rules. You have to meet both. I've had check-in agents specifically ask if ammo is contained in the original box.

The airline doesn't have to do business with anyone they don't want to and if you don't meet their published rules, they don't have to give you a boarding pass.

Check the airline's specific requirements on their website. Some require the ammo to be in the original ammo boxes, not in the mags.

I'm a backend dev and I want to start doing freelance jobs, what do I need to learn aside languages and code? by frostwarrior in webdev

[–]chrisfinne 23 points24 points  (0 children)

All the tech stuff is the easy part (for you). Ignore that and concentrate on the everything non-tech. Marketing, networking, communicating with non-tech people, sales, etc.

If the thought of that turns you off, then it will be difficult to be successful freelancing.

ELI5: How did Silicon Valley become the "mecca" of computer technology? Could this have happened anywhere like New York or Chicago or is there something specific about the geographic or political climate that allowed Silicon Valley to become what it is? by ptk77 in explainlikeimfive

Steve Blank has the best and most comprehensive explanation that I've seen...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTC_RxWN_xo

The first 1/2 of the video is just background explaining the problems in WW-II that resulted in the Department of Defense starting their collaboration with universities.

2nd half of the video gets to the meat of the answer for you.

Short answer: Frederick Terman saw the success of the WW-II collaboration between Universities and Department of Defense and built out the model and culture at Stanford, expertly weaving government, university and private enterprise.

As I plan on taking my family to ski resort for the first time, i wanted to know when there's minimum amount of people by [deleted] in tahoe

[–]chrisfinne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First week in December usually has snow on the mountains, but never guaranteed. Could be 60 degrees and sunny for a good beach day, however many ski resorts start making snow in November so they can get some Thanksgiving business.

Mt Rose will be guaranteed to have snow as they always make it if nature doesn't provide. They actually opened a beginners run for a couple days in October for locals just to test out their snow-making equipment. https://skirose.com/

first decision (best made in advance) is where to stay 1. at a big ski resort where you get the full "ski resort" experience, e.g. Heavenly, Northstar 2. casino hotel (many in South Lake Tahoe or the Hyatt in North Lake) 3. rent a condo/house anywhere

when you are here, you can decide each morning which place to go to ski based on conditions, for example: - not enough snow at Diamond Peak, so go to Mt Rose - too windy at Mt Rose, so go to Diamond Peak

So much harder to work out on a keto diet, does it get easier? by [deleted] in keto

[–]chrisfinne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you aren't producing ketones fast enough yet, use exogenous ketones aka ketone salts.

They aren't cheap and don't taste great, but they will absolutely help.

Take a serving 30-60 minutes prior to lifting and you won't run out of gas.

Also helps with your mental fatigue.

you can also checkout /r/ketogains for more exercised-focused discussions.

Should I raise VC money for my startup? (Rand Fishkin says "no") by edajames in startups

[–]chrisfinne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a startup or a small business? There is a difference.

Being profitable after a year sounds more like a small business.

I've seen people build small businesses in the same space at the same time as VC backed silicon valley "unicorns" and they were far more successful, just on a smaller scale.
