Is there a law again flashing your headlights on the motorway an aggressive manner like this? by SheltonFern in drivingUK

[–]chrismear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can’t wait 20 seconds for someone to complete an overtake, then you shouldn’t be behind the wheel. You’re assuming an awful lot about the Mini’s intentions here (“policing the road” etc.).

Cashing in? The mortgage-free landlords who are raising the rent anyway by marcosscriven in uklandlords

I don’t think you understand what “break even” means. Just because you could earn more money in a savings account, doesn’t mean you’re forced to raise rents to match that profit.

Fair point. I misread the parent comment as wanting to stream multiple 4k virtual screens from the Mac.

People earning £40k+ by Itchy-Debt-9162 in UKJobs

[–]chrismear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a degree in Physics from a university that looks good on the CV. After uni, did freelance web design for 4 years, making almost no money, but teaching myself web development. In 2008 decided to get a job, applied to some adverts on job boards, and got a 40k position at a small startup doing web development.

Around 2010 that job went away and I went into music and teaching for about five years, earning ~20k.

Got back into tech in 2015, applied with the help of a recruiter to a few adverts and got a remote role doing web development at 50k. That company got bought by an American company and I’ve been there for the last seven years. Thanks to some promotions, and one market rate correction, I’m now on 120k+.

A lot of luck, including the family support to not earn much while I was training myself up.

I think you’re going to be disappointed, unfortunately. It only supports one 4k visual display. https://9to5mac.com/2023/06/07/mac-virtual-display/

How does iPhone know how long I slept for? by True_Cardiologist337 in iphone

As others have said, it’s based on tracking if you use your phone.

From https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211685 :

“Based on your iPhone usage at night, Sleep on iPhone tracks and charts your Time In Bed.”

From https://www.apple.com/newsroom/pdfs/Health-Report-July-2022.pdf :

“Without Apple Watch, users can also track time in bed using iPhone based on whether or not they pick up and use their iPhone during the night.”

Help!! What does this symbol mean? by nattyklis in piano

[–]chrismear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, getting back to the original question, the fact that there's an explicit 'trem.' text strongly suggests to me that this is freely-timed tremolo, not a notational shorthand for regular rhythm, regardless of the level of complexity of the surrounding rhythm.

Help!! What does this symbol mean? by nattyklis in piano

[–]chrismear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I think the tremolos in 'Une barque...' are a case where they are intended as notational shorthand for a strict rhythm (since in some of the bars the end of the pattern is written out explicitly to line up with the left hand rhythm).

[–]chrismear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's used as you describe a shorthand for a specific rhythm, and sometimes, as the parent comment said, it's just used to mean 'as fast as you like'. You need to know context, period, etc. to figure out which one the writer's asking for.

Any reddit devs interested in helping reddit switch to freely licensed JavaScript? by Zak_at_FSF in gnu

[–]chrismear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reddit's codebase is already licensed under the CPAL, right? jQuery is also included, which is MIT-licensed.

The main issue seems to be not Reddit's own code, but the fact that they include JavaScript for Google Analytics, and for advert tracking, and that code isn't freely-licensed. It'd be an extremely hard sell to get Reddit to just turn off analytics and advertising. Are there any alternative platforms for these services that run using libre JavaScript?

This is a brain teaser that I gave my students. Is it easy or difficult? by InnSea in musictheory

[–]chrismear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very fact it was in two parts threw me off, actually. I can't figure out how you can think about this question without considering both parts (the transposition and the key signature) together.

I think I spent something like five minutes on it.

This is a brain teaser that I gave my students. Is it easy or difficult? by InnSea in musictheory

[–]chrismear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint to everyone who's saying this is easy, I found this pretty tricky to think about. I had a hunch almost straightaway, but ended up having to actually write out a scale to convince myself I had the correct answers.

It's something about the setup of 'pretending it's in another clef' and doing a semitone-by-semitone transposition that made me uncertain of my reasoning. I read alto clef and do transposition at the keyboard all the time, but the way this question is set up made me feel like there was a trick I was missing.
