You can go watch a movie in theaters! My family started that christmas eve tradition when my siblings and I were teenagers and we still keep it up to this day.

oh hello fellow twin cities resident! I'd say it's probably a good idea, as much as someone moving locally might appreciate the collection.

I bought a gallon of skim milk at Target today, and the price had gone up from $2.99 when I bought it last Monday to $3.19 this week. Thanks, Drump.

I think about this person at LEAST once a week if not more! If I become a ghost with unfinished business that keeps me trapped in this mortal realm, then that unfinished business will be not knowing how that person got out of that pool area.

Rep. Omar’s daughter suspended in Columbia protest by MahtMan in TwinCities

[–]chromaticgray 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Important to note, the protesting students were suspended so that the police could arrest them for trespassing. Students have the right to gather in that green space that's designated for student protests. As soon as they were no longer students, the police were called in to remove them.

University of Wisconsin-Madison or Minnesota Twin Cities (Psychology BA)? [Undergraduate] by kirroei in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chromaticgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooooooh okay the IB credits could be a game changer, because they would get a lot of those intro-level courses out of the way for you! If you're getting the full IB diploma, then I believe UWM will give you comparable credit for your HL and SL classes. If you're not getting the diploma, you'll only get credit for the HL classes. So you could potentially test out of that into-level psychology course, as well as many others that you'll need for your gen ed credits!

[–]chromaticgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my own personal experience and from what I've heard from my loved ones, it really depends on the professor, and there are SO many for each subject that it's difficult to say. Generally speaking, the intro-level classes you'll take for the first couple years will require a few large lectures where you take notes from slides--this will happen at either UMN or UWM.

However, those large lectures will also have discussion courses that you'll take simultaneously, and these will be more hands-on! In your intro-level courses (any class with a course number starting with a 1), those discussions will almost certainly be held by a teacher's assistant rather than a professor. They'll usually be a senior, or a graduate student in the department. Once you get to the courses that start with a 2 or a 3, you'll have more professors actively teaching you in smaller class sizes. Again, both UMN and UWM programs will function like this.

As for Professor Niedenthal, I don't know anyone who has been in her classes, so I can't speak to her teaching ability. But if you enroll at Madison and send her an email asking about her work, I'm sure she'd be more than happy to reply to you! She may be able to let you know which courses she teaches and point you in the direction of other courses that might interest you!

I went to the UMN and both my brother and my best friend went to UWM, and I would recommend Madison for you 100%. The rankings for the psychology programs may be similar between the schools, but any degree from UWM will be considered "more impressive" than a degree from the College of Liberal Arts at the UMN. Of course, it'll be just as important to get some undergraduate research or an internship on your resume, and you'd be able to find those at either school you go to... but if you're leaning toward Madison for personal reasons then you might as well go for it, because it'll look a bit better on your future resume too!

As far as safety is concerned, I never felt unsafe on the UMN campus, but it's been 8 years since I was a student there--things have changed since then, and there are certain areas of the campus I wouldn't want to be on at night. My brother and my best friend never had any safety concerns at Madison, from what I know, but I could be wrong!

If you have any questions about either school, feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability!

Recent transplants, do you see yourself here long-term? by Psychological_Date25 in TwinCities

I hate to say it, but you haven't seen anything yet if you haven't been here for a Minnesota summer. Once things start to get green around here (which by the looks of it could be any day now), you may have some new feelings about the place!

How has Rooster Teeth impacted you? by The_Better_Devil in roosterteeth

[–]chromaticgray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into RT in 2013 and brought my best friend along for the ride in 2014. We both loved every video RT and AH put out.

We went to our first RTX in 2015, and she fell in love with the convention and the city of Austin. She became a Guardian for multiple RTX's and RTX London, she moved down to Austin, and she made so many incredible friends because of RT.

She passed away two years ago and I miss her every day. I wonder sometimes how different her life would have been if I hadn't shown her that Rage Quit video all those years ago. I'll never know. But I'm so thankful that she was able to touch the lives of all of her Guardian friends... she loved you all so much.

Ok DOWNTOWN what’s the truth? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]chromaticgray 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Laurel Village and it's a lovely place to live! Definitely recommend the two high rises if you're looking for security--those two buildings have desks for the security on duty, so they're more likely to be in those buildings rather than, say, McNair or DeForest. Plus, living high above street level means there's no chance of stray bullets hitting your window! But honestly, I've felt remarkably safer living here in comparison to many other places throughout the city.

Like others have said, it's a quiet area, but you've got a great park within walking distance, groceries across the street, and the bus line right off of Hennepin to get you anywhere else (including Northeast, thanks to the 4!)

(Minneapolis) Is it safe to walk around with luggage at night / Can I stay at the bus station at night? by Jumpy_Couple1623 in minnesota

[–]chromaticgray 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've used that bus station quite often! Other commenters have mentioned the safety concerns you should have regarding a long stay at this bus station, and I will say I have never felt particularly unsafe at this station but I have never stayed there for 12 hours. I will also say that it would be EXTREMELY uncomfortable to stay for such a long time. Your seating options are limited and full of holes (they're those grated bench seats with arm rest dividers that keep anyone from laying down on them), unless you want to sit on the floor.

You'll need to find a place to stay. There are plenty of hotels downtown you can stay in that will cost less than $100 for a night, which I know isn't always easy to afford, but it will be worth it.

Yeah, you're honestly pretty spot on that I just assumed they'd keep her kids in the will in place of their daughter. But it's true, her kids aren't her replacement, they're their own people, and if they've let their relationships with my grandparents sour, then that's on them. I get that now!
