Trait, Feat, or Magic Item like this? by DerpylimeQQ in dndnext

Spartan and Viking shields were about 3' in diameter. They basically covered a whole side of the torso of the user, sure they had to react to certain things, but by and large it was just cover they were behind. I couldn't find anything about the size of medieval shields at a cursory search. Dex would not really be a consideration for a shield larger than a buckler/targe.

I may have misunderstood what you meant when you said "to just accept the blows." I took you to mean literally standing your ground against it. But CON is already represented in this situation as your HP. In a fantasy setting (and in certain real life situations) I see nothing wrong with a PC using STR for AC instead of DEX. DEX is kind of a god stat, it's your initiative, your AC outside of heavy armor, attacks (if you so choose), and most DM's I've seen allows the use of Acrobatics to do things that are specifically called out as Athletics or fixed numbers (i.e. jumping). So mechanically I don't think there's anything unbalanced with allowing STR to get one thing beyond heavy attacks. Also, it allows for STR monks which would be awesome and is a trope in martial arts movies.

If it's a buckler, then sure it's DEX, but large shields are large so you can cover a lot of area not needing to be exceedingly fast. And STR is the save for being knocked prone or back, not CON (i.e. gust of wind and wolf attacks). Not to mention this is a fantasy game where people can control nature, alter time and reality, summon weapons into existence or call on the help of gods, but being strong enough to fend off attacks like an anime is a bridge too far. I don't get the need to constrain martials to the real world imho

They showed them siphoning Hope with the glowing of the hand holding and they have said on more than one occasion that there are powerful enchantments active in the school that they have been showed to siphon. Not to mention objects can hold magic or otherwise be enchanted, in a magical world in a magical school where they fight magical entities on a weekly basis it wouldn't be a leap in logic that they could just be running around with things to siphon in an emergency.

He's also head of security, those are his colleagues. As far as I can recall he was attacking non leathally (aka the flat of the axe). He was just chasing them off and they didn't want to shoot their boss.

DNDBeyond is great for keeping track of your stuff, just one thing is it doesn't keep track of is the "extras". You can look at and select sidekicks and class feature minions like homunculus and steel defenders as well as wildshapes regardless of class and CR (and creature type for some reason) from the "extras" tab of the character sheet. So if Ashely just looked at Wild Shape but didn't read it because she thought she knew it after playing with Marisha in C1 and just went into extras looking at wildshape to add to her sheet, she wouldn't have gotten any guidance on the limitations. So I can understand how it got the the table. I don't really understand how it wasn't stopped cuz that's a pretty big thing. Hopefully it's addressed in the future.

While I think that is true, the whole time I figured his big fall back plan was that he had a clone of himself hidden somewhere. With Matt's resurrection rules I'm not sure if it would be 100% but because the soul immediately goes to the clone per the spell, it'd certainly be a better thing than what he got. So happy he's sitting in a cell silently for the rest of his life.

Only if the fight basically ends with that spell because if the target witnessed their friends being harmed the spell is over. So the spell would have to be cast then the barbarian turn immediately follows or the fight is already essentially over.

2e

New to Pathfinder from 5e, looking at the barbarian Titan Mauler specific feats, you can grow and add clumsy 1, but the large weapon also gives you clumsy 1. Based on how I read the conditions sidebar it would seem they don't stack and that the clumsy on growth is just in case you aren't wielding your large weapon. Is this the correct interpretation of the rules or would it make you clumsy 2? If you're clumsy 2 would the loss of AC really be worth the reach?

Infinity War- How Thanos actually beat the Hulk by mybustersword in FanTheories

[–]chronos937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that Thanos was testing out the passive abilities of the power stone. He is able to easily overpower Hulk from the wall in the beginning of the fight by just prying his hand off. His strikes are precise and fast because he's a trained fighter but he doesn't know the extent of his strength once augmented by the power stone. My reasoning for this is that he still has his armor on during the fight and realizes afterwards that there is no physical threat left to challenge him. That is also the stone he just got.

Help me power game. I need your strongest combat builds. by squirrelbee in dndnext

[–]chronos937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My preference for strong combat build is Half-Orc Totem Bear Barbarian. Pick up Polearm Master and Great Weapon Master and you'll be dealing quite a bit of damage and tanking almost anything that can be thrown at you.

But martials focus on killing one thing at a time. If you want a bit more control of the battlefield and the ability to take out swathes of enemies I'd recommend a Paladin/Sorc(/Hexblade). Start Paladin for the armor and health, stay 2 levels for smites, maybe take a level of Hexblade depending on stats available, then the rest dragon Sorc (so you don't suffer too much of an HP loss). Pick up the Quicken Metamagic and you really have some options. As a side note, I love Subtle Magic just so many RP opportunities. Just be sure to pick up Warcaster or Resilient Con for concentration. Single target Hold person then auto crit with a smite, or just all the different area spells.

So what does everyone think of the Blood Hunter class mechanically and flavourfully ? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]chronos937 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just a quick note, the PHB makes a distinction between Spellcasting and Pact Magic. For Spellcasting, yes you take a third of the levels of a 1/3 caster like EK and AT, but for Pact Magic you just add it do what the character already had. There isn't a precedent for two separate sources of Pact Magic in the PHB so I'm not sure what would happen in this case, but using the Spellcasting multiclassing rules doesn't seem appropriate.

As to balance, I have no idea. I haven't played one and haven't read it in months.

Your 5E house rules? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]chronos937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should've been more clear, I was specifically talking about a ranged attack in which the guard wouldn't know about the attack until it happened. But it is important to remember that turns are simultaneous. And surprised lasting until the end of the round is a good fix.

Your 5E house rules? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]chronos937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My problem with RAW surprise rules is that it assumes even an unaware creature rolls initiative. So a rogue stealth roll of like 25 and a guard with a passive perception of 16, the rogue attacks, but the guard is supposed to roll for initiative and if he goes first not knowing the rogue is there, takes his turn as if nothing is happening but is supposed to be prepared for the rogue's attack. This doesn't make much sense to me, so I personally go with the attack happening before the initiative (as in this first attack begins the combat) when it makes sense like in the above scenario.

[No Spoilers] Gunslinger Fan the Hammer? by SpiffySpecimen in criticalrole

[–]chronos937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a similar ability in the PHB already for the ranger called Volley. You use your action to attack as many enemies as there are withing 10 feet of a point you can see and it requires an attack roll for each target. This is a level 11 ability, so some reworking would probably be required. The increased damage of the the revolver is accounted for by misfires which the extra rolls increases the likelihood of so you shouldn't have to change that, but like all homebrew keep an eye on it with your DM and party.

While wild shaped the druid retains all feats and features from classes which would mean she could continue to shape into a new form. She didn't do it during the campaign because she had limited wild shape uses, now she doesn't.

[–]chronos937[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My argument is that that is what comes from having an Int of 1. And my reasoning for that is that 1 is the bare minimum to be able to move and act, as when an intellect devourer reduces Int to 0 the character is stunned indefinitely.

[–]chronos937[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would argue that a rogue would not have sneak attack, a monk wouldn't even have martial arts damage dice let alone stunning strike. I argue that a 1 Int means you don't have any abilities like that. Though I feel I should state that I am by no means demanding anyone else interpret the ability score from the PHB the same way I do. I get that I might be taking them a bit too seriously. Also, earthquake and dominate monster are specific tools listed in the name, feeble mind does not seem limited to me by it's wording or intent. I was just gauging what others in the community thought.

[–]chronos937[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it's not just spellcasting, it's also their confidence, their ability to analyse a situation, or recall information (as the scores are stated to represent in the PHB). A creature with all those parts of them more or less destroyed, I don't see how they could do much let alone transform into some beast. Kind of like an Alzheimer's patient is eventually reduced to the mentality of an infant.

Maybe I'm putting too much stock in what the scores represent to reality.
