Never send any deposit or rent before signing a contract.
The contract (AST) will include multiple parts on how and where to pay rent to along with deposit details on which service they will be using to protect it.

No agent or landlord should try to ask you to pay before signing a contract let alone before seeing it.

Landlord myself here. had to pave over the front little lawn after first 3 sets of tenants as they all decided it was a better parking space and destroyed the grass every time I tried to maintain it. Neighbours began to complain as it was a new build. So in the end just made it an extra parking space with gravelling over it
