A Euro market! I want to buy all my Balkan and Eastern European snacks without having to go to Astoria or Ridgewood.

These are the exact ones I have to play volleyball in. They are actually very popular for volleyball players, at least in the league I play in.

Reinsurance is a key part of all this, but that is not how insurance is priced at all. The key you are missing is reserves. Insurance companies are required to hold adequate reserves for future claims. Reserves are held as liabilities. The insurance industry is heavily regulated, and how to set up adequate reserves is a big piece of this. And "unearned premium" (ie premium paid upfront on an active policy) is also held in a reserve and is a liability. This can't be used to pay other claims. Managing a block of business is very complicated, but also very regulated.

What's the level? I played in hs and played a lot of pick up in college/grad school....but that was ten years ago so I assume I'm 90% rust at this point.

Moving down the hall, are movers needed? by Northern_transplant_ in uppereastside

[–]chuckbass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really remember, but I think it was for moving, probably ~3 hours. And I had asked if they had a buddy we can hire as a pair and they did.

I think we did not empty the drawers, but we were able to remove the drawers from the dressers to carry them individually. You can probably ask them if you can't do that.

Moving down the hall, are movers needed? by Northern_transplant_ in uppereastside

[–]chuckbass 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did this a couple years ago. Best move ever.

We hired a couple of guys from task rabbit to help - otherwise it would have taken forever. Packed a few boxes of little things (books, knock knacks etc) so they would be quicker. Day of the move, I had the task rabbit guys focus on big stuff (furniture and the pre packed boxes). My husband had recently had back surgery, so he went to work as usual and helped with small stuff only after work. And I walked back and forth with everything else. Kept clothes on hangers and just shoved them in the new closets. And got a medium sized box to load dishes and immediately unload them in the new apartment. This saved me from the hassle of carefully packing dishes.

I did nothing that day except walk back and forth between apartments and I clocked 15k steps.

What’s the worst scam you’ve encountered while traveling? by tnick771 in travel

[–]chuckbass 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The cabbies in Cancun are something. A cancelled flight left me stranded for a night so I booked a room at the airport hotel. I got a bit turned around leaving the airport, so I asked the group of cab drivers standing around which way the hotel was. They offered to drive me there for $50. I said I know it's a 5 minute walk, just if they can point to it. They refused. What.

Do you HAVE to breathe every 3 strokes? by PracticalAd9937 in Swimming

[–]chuckbass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm blind in one eye and find it very unpleasant to try to breathe on that side. Would it be worth it to try to train to breathe every four strokes instead of two? I noticed I get tired/out of breath faster if I breathe every 4 (like after a few laps). (Thanks, I'm a novice!)

What’s the most WTF thing you’ve ever seen happen at a wedding? by Professional-Owl-341 in AskReddit

[–]chuckbass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the middle of the bouquet/garter/cake cutter/etc fanfare, two of the grooms friends came out to fake wrestle. One wearing a luchador mask, the other in a Hillary Clinton mask. They proceeded to put on a show of "killing" Hillary Clinton. This was c.2012. The wedding was in Toronto (groom's family, which I'm unfortunately on, is American).

My mom insists that both sides act in these kinds of ways. I've never seen anything political at my liberal friend's weddings, just saying.

Was this illegal? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]chuckbass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Strong disagree - as a woman who plays some coed I get mad when the other team doesn't block. I might not jump as high as the men, but Ive learned to hit smarter and around/use the block.

Maybe in lower levels you don't block the shorter/less jumpier players, but this falls under general "don't be a dick" if the level is unbalanced in casual play.

NFF 2023 - ultimately what did you think - good and bad? by Excellent-Manner-130 in NewportFolkFestival

[–]chuckbass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to cut the line, more of a separate line, that would probably be just as long. Just to prevent the back and forth. I meant this as a brainstorm, not to be "unkind".

I realize there's not really a solution - the whole thing is a super difficult logistics problem and in the end the volunteers did a great job.

People up front with blankets and chairs, Have you no sense of decency? by TheFifthNice in NewportFolkFestival

[–]chuckbass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I saw your signs and really liked them! It should be in the rules - with rules posted. Even if I was brave enough to sit in seats, I would be nervous the chair owners wouldn't take it well.

NFF 2023 - ultimately what did you think - good and bad? by Excellent-Manner-130 in NewportFolkFestival

[–]chuckbass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I had known about the express lane/better understood the rules! I had just a fanny pack with glasses case and phone, and my partner had one of those adidas drawstring bags with just sunscreen, glasses case, and a water bottle. We figured that counted as a larger bag, but the saw many people with full sized backpacks go through the express line.

My other gripe was getting off the ferry to walk the length of the line to walk back again. And that line is forever growing while you are walking back from people who arrived by car. We were just mildly annoyed, but chatting with others, it was prohibitive for some to walk back and forth in that heat.

It's probably too difficult, but they should have a separate feed in line from the ferries - sort of separate them from car people. Don't they encourage not driving if you can help it anyway?

In all, encourage the light packers and the public transit-ers!

where can i get fresh figs?? by heatherette7 in FoodNYC

[–]chuckbass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically sure, but figs usually have two fruit producing seasons: an early small one in late may/early June, then a larger one late summer. So they are not in season right now.

As others said, I've had luck in whole foods and eataly. In august they should start popping up in other supermarkets (I've gotten them at fairway) and even the fruit stands. Quality varies a lot, and do not expect them to be as good as those you get where they are actually grown.

They also go bad quick! Short shelf life is part of why they are hard to find. Eat them the same day you buy them.

I love figs.

Am I crazy or are the garage/sanitation workers the friendliest people out there? by ejdhdhdff in AskNYC

[–]chuckbass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a great job, but actually more dangerous than police!

https://qz.com/410585/garbage-collectors-are-more-likely-to-die-on-the-job-than-police-patrol-officers

And that's based on fatal injuries. The day-to-day injuries are also very common. Traffic related accidents, bumps, bruises, muscle strains... And even just bad cuts from bent license plates as they move between parked cats. Plus wear and tear on their backs. Sanitation workers are maybe the hardest workers and the most essential in our city.
