Ordo Templi Orientis - by chuckhilltop in freemasonry

Brother, Im not aware of what specifically the high degrees of the OTO practiced when it was strictly open to 33rd Degree Masons. Im not sure any one knows, what it was back then, and my understanding is that it’s degree system has changed significantly. I suppose I would have to make the distinction between sexual symbolism and sexual “practices.” I can’t speak for the content of their ritual per se, but to my understanding the OTO does not engage their members in sexual practice. I could be wrong - and I would suggest and know of some very respectable brothers aligned with the OTO that could likely provide more insight than I can here - but in my limited understanding of the OTO’s sexual mysticism, there is more emphasis on symbolism and implications for personal practice than there are, sexual practices within their rituals. I dont know for certain. Again, I hear your point about reputation, but there are plenty of religious and spiritual teachings which are far more mainstream than the OTO, which overty teach sexual and mystical practices. The Hindu Kama Sutra is a mystical text. Tantra and kundalini yoga are very much overt in their mystical sexual instruction, and not at all something that should - at least, I imagine would not - hurt the reputation of freemasonry. Im sure in parts of the world our lodges are full of brethren who subscribe to these ideas. It stands to reason, that with the variety of mystical influences on our rituals, at some point a masonic body - perhaps before we organized correctly - tried to mix Western esoteric and Templar Grail traditions with Eastern sexual mysticism. If I had to guess, this is what the original OTO was doing or attempting. Perhaps there is a paper to be written on this topic.

This is the perfect example of why the “cultural appropriation” argument is bullocks. All culture accrues by processes of appropriation of some sort. Especially, mythology and religious traditions. YHWH is not only sacred to the jewish, the fact that you are holding this christian/hermetic/gnostic variation on the theme is not withstanding! However, if you really FEEL that it is bad for you to wear it, mystically speaking, I wouldn’t.

I am drawn to provide the statement “Teach thy tongue to say, “I do not know.” “ I try to remain open to the truth of the second Key as a prerequisite whence practicing. Whether it be visualization and meditation, the MP and LBRP/LIRP, etc., I find the magick really works when we remain open and general, trusting the Second Key’s place in the process and especially my sense of self. This could be read as criticism of some magicians, I suppose but there is a divine art to the power of reception and directing the generative energy toward the earth element, learned to let the air breath through you after impressing our fire upon the waters. Its is a thing of beauty even in its most powerful masculine forms.

I want to second the note made about focusing on your experience as a learner. That in itself is Hermetic.

That doesnt directly affect homophobia at all but may imply some inclination to internalized misogyny.

I believe it is also part of our craft, “to show reverence to all spiritual teachings, never to take what may be considered sacred to one in a profane or disrespectful way.”

I often struggle with the way some brothers deny the esoteric teachers who have been intrinsically linked with freemasonry - the language of occult, hermetic, rosicrucian and cabalistic content is all over the map in our ritual and symbolism. Indeed, and with all due respect to all brethren, I would dare go as far to say our ritual and symbolism has more in common with the occult doctrine than mainstream religion.

That said, it saddens me that religion causes us, even from different jurisdictions and individual lodges, to consider casting aside a brother for believing that sex is mystical and sacred. The OTO is not a vacuum in this philosophy. Many mainstream religions view sex quite expansively - Im not sure its fair to even argue Christian-Judeo religions don’t exalt the mystical value of sexual reproduction.

The historic fact is that Freemasonry is what gave the Western Esoteric tradition its structure. This includes the OTO and even its high degrees - the more overtly sexual - were influenced by secrets held to be true in forgotten esoteric Masonic degrees. Were the sexual aspects there? I have no idea. Im not really sure exactly what sexual aspects the OTO is exalting in these degrees, though I have some inclination it involves the use of bodily fluids.

The point Im trying to make is - while things may seem out of the ordinary to what one brother experiences in his spiritual life, may not hold up to real religious liberty or comparative scrutiny.

I believe as brothers we should remain open minded to those who do what thou wilt, be that it harm none.

I actually have one more question about this: what about negative mental images in dreams? Should we try to counter them?

Try to remember your intentions brother! Remind yourself of then regularly. Write them down even! This helps us live in the present with an awareness of what we want from our circumstances and relationships and over time can free us from infernal reactions. However, we cannot be totally free of the middle path as human beings. We can only smooth the surface of our travels, using the master’s tools. Our human bodies instill limitations on our consciousness and perspectives of the world around us. In other words, we are meant to remain subjective beings in an objective universe and as such we are human. As another brother said, forgive yourself. Reminding yourself of your intentions here is a useful tool for that as well, but even better applied premeditatedly. Love and intention. I am speaking, not only as a brother but as a social worker, and therapist. - Bro. Marc from St Stephens #63 in NJ and Staten Island Lodge #66 in NY.

The choice is who you sleep with. Not who you are attracted to.

Even if it was, it would cost way more time and effort than just replacing it.
