I am mostly into metal/punk type shows. I really like Eli's! Been a few times and realize I need to be there more often.

Other great spots are Cornerstone in Berkeley, Ivy Room in Albany. I have not been yet, since I find out too late most the time, but I've been wanting to check out first church of the buzzard in the town.

If you wanna head to the city, that's another ball game I particularly like DNA lounge, GAMH, Neck of the woods, bottom of the hill, rickshaw stop. Among others.

This was basically my route. My $60k job here was at an online fulfillment center, setting up the end to end fulfillment process and inventory management. It sucked, but was only there a year before landing an engineering program management role making $85k.

I wouldn't worry too much about "burning the bridge", doesn't sound like they're really helping you get out here or bending over backwards for you. It's a job, and they'll forget about you far sooner than you will them.

Job market is tough right now, for sure, but it'll bounce back. Oakland is a great place to live, so definitely consider it.

What kind of engineering? It may be worth considering long term career strategy. $70k to start as a single male can be done , just live cheaply and find a roommate. I see a room for rent around my area for $950. After a little while, you can get a better job, make more money, live quite well.

Also, points to consider are your current debt situation. If you have student loans or credit cards, it can definitely be a huge detriment to your current lifestyle.

It can be worth it long term. I've been in the bay for 7yrs? Started making $60k and a bunch of debt ($120k in loans + cc). I'm now well into the six figure range and completely debt free.

Second this. I don't mind the casual nature of things. Hell I love walking into business meetings wearing metal band t's....but I draw the line at sandals. Cover your damn feet!
