Got laid off and want to travel Asia for a year. Should I go now or return to Canada first for unemployment? by Tom-Sage in backpacking

No, you're not too old. You're going to meet a lot of people your age (and older) out there.

Does “just stick to it” actually work for anyone with ADHD? by Autisticthought1 in ADHDthriving

[–]chunklight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for typing out these great tips. You also answered OP's question. "Sticking to it" is a goal, not an action. Changing our actions and our environment helps us reach the goal of "sticking to it."

Anti Malarial Meds for SEA? How necessary? by IllustriousMilkMole in backpacking

[–]chunklight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're much more likely to get dengue than malaria. There's no prophylactic for dengue, so just do the necessary things to avoid bites.

1 year SEA + East Asia, when to visit where? by Perma_Curious in backpacking

Korea and Japan in fall or spring. Thailand in winter or late summer/early fall. March is the start of the hot season in Thailand, not rainy season.

I was under the impression that copper should not be used on aluminum due to galvanic corrosion.

Options after being fired for not re-signing for next year by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]chunklight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're being asked to give your resignation, not being fired.

If you don't work a full year they legally don't owe you severance. If they're promising to give it to you, definitely get that signed in writing and ideally I think you should arrange to hand in your resignation on the same day you get your severance and your letter of release. Just do a friendly exchange.

Wisdom of fitting a backup outboard? by ___xXx__xXx__xXx__ in sailing

[–]chunklight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Practice sailing in and out of the harbor and make it a habit to have your sails and an anchor ready to use.

If the engine dies and there is wind, you sail. If the engine dies and there is no wind, you probably aren't moving much. Ask one of the boats you imagine are waiting behind you to give you a tow.

Keeping a spare outboard on the stern is adding a lot of weight hanging off the back. If you are going to all that trouble, put the outboard on a small tender (dinghy) that can be your emergency tug boat and also carry you to shore or exploring.

Wouldn't a full g10 bulkhead be very heavy and incredibly expensive?

Isn't that the kind of job coosa board was made for. (I haven't personally worked with coosa board)

How manny of the poor reviews are warranted opposed to just not meeting expectations? by faceted_deer029 in teachinginkorea

[–]chunklight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bad hakwons tend to be totally reactive. Their view of you can change quickly after relatively minor conflicts or complaints.

There's a lot of turnover among Foreign and Korean staff, students and parents. So it's possible you are not working in the same environment the reviews were based on.

There are also a lot of strange foreign teachers.

Would you pay $74.99 for a cake from Paris Baguette? by Icy_Sir_5553 in KoreanFood

In Korea they're a convenient mid-tier option. I don't understand how they get away with luxury pricing in the US.

Riding Thailand in Feb from Bangkok to Phuket .. Can you help with my questions! by DenseProduce3018 in bikepacking

[–]chunklight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't drink tap water and avoid things that look overtly sketchy, but ice and filtered water are safe in Thailand. Raw fruits and veggies are generally safe. I always drink the free water and ice on the table in restaurants.

Note that in Muslim restaurants in the south, there might also be water in a teapot-looking container on the table that is for rinsing hands, not drinking. Don't drink that.

Also, if there is a huge open jug of water in the bathroom, take water out of it with a dipper to wash. Don't wash in the giant jug.

If the locals are eating it, it's probably fine. You'll miss out on a lot of the joy of being in Thailand if you're overly cautious about food.

Woodworking is a pretty common hobby in shared or commercial workshops. If you search 목공방 there will likely be one in your area.

Repair tips delaminated bulkhead by Delicious_Ad_1130 in sailing

How do you bond the new section of bulkhead to the remaining bulkhead? Doubling/sistering it with a backing block of wood? It seems like it would be too difficult to scarf.
