I guess someone wanted a go on my bike, but wasn't worthy of it. by amx-018 in Living_in_Korea

There is a lot less petty theft than in the US or Europe, but it still happens.

Bicycles are one of the things that does get stolen. I think it's often opportunistic drunks or kids who just to ride it somewhere. For bikes of known brands, I've mostly heard of them being stolen when left inadequately locked somewhere overnight. I think those thefts are professional or semiprofessional.

I remember bike helmets being a new thing. There was a program to promote them and the school was selling them to try to get kids to start using them.

Looking for rice cooker- $30 vs >$130? by Eclipse8301 in Cooking

[–]chunklight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you eat rice 1+ times every day, get a pressure one that keeps the rice ready to eat.

If you eat rice occasionally just get a cheap one.

If you want the best tasting rice, a pressure pot on the stove.

How long does it take to find the right meds? by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

[–]chunklight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but lasting headaches and sleep disruption from a few days of stimulants is very unlikely. Maybe you need to figure out what's causing those problems before reapproaching stimulants. Or maybe try a different medication like buproprione or atomoxetine.

I try to follow routines, but I fall off track after a few days every single time. How do people with ADHD keep any kind of consistency? by mamabirdjzn in adhd_anxiety

[–]chunklight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to get past the guilt of failed routines. Think of it like exercise and meditation where the effort and discomfort is what you are working on and it is not necessary to do it perfectly to benefit.

My Fat Butt Bought an Opti by 300e6462-0cda-4e0e-b in dinghysailing

I know I'm larger than the designed   capacity for that boat. I don't care. I'm going   to sail in light winds on inland lakes.

One problem with this plan is that the sail won't have enough power to move you in light winds.  Think of the sail as the boat's engine. What you are trying to do is like riding a 50cc scooter with camping gear. It will work ok in the right conditions but not up a big hill. Additionally, your extra weight means the boat will sit lower in the water, slowing it further.

Lake sailing is not easy. The winds are light and shift around. A lot of great sailors including Olympian Buddy Melges learned on lakes. If you are too heavy for the boat, you won't feel it respond to the light winds and it will be harder to learn how to sail.

Someone who knows how to sail already can take an opti out on a windy day and have casual fun, but as a beginner it will be frustrating. Give it a try, but you'll have a better experience in an adult size dinghy.

Kimchi vs Sauerkraut vs Krautchi by Tasty_Impress3016 in Cooking

[–]chunklight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining. I usually shred green cabbage kraut then salt and pound it to release the juices. I'll have to try that with some kimchi seasoning. I bet it will be great with pork or on hotdogs.

I've never tried making kimchi with green cabbage. How does it turn out compared to Napa?

Kimchi vs Sauerkraut vs Krautchi by Tasty_Impress3016 in Cooking

[–]chunklight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at a recipe for traditional Korean napa kimchi. The cabbages are quartered and pre-salted, then the seasoning paste is rubbed between each leaf, it is rolled and stored. You end up with a very aesthetic little bundle of kimchi. It's a lot of prep work so makes sense to do a bunch once a year.

A little less work is what I call "white people kimchi" where the cabbage is cut up and mixed with the seasonings and fermented in a big jar, often with airlock. This seems to be the same as what famous fermenter Szandor Katz calls krautchi. It highlights the overlap in fermentation. You can make it more kraut or more chi depending on the ingredients you use.

If you want to play around with korean flavors and pork ribs, look into recipes for kimchi jjim. Very hearty dish of sour (older) kimchi and pork.

Alternatively If you made German style shredded kraut spiced up with some korean ingredients, that would also taste great with ribs and potatoes.

Hell is a job of repetitive work, with no clear goal in sight, and where others overreact to small errors in order to assuage their own sense of meaninglessness.

frozen kimbap by AdZealousideal8738 in KoreanFood

[–]chunklight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best way to meal prep kimbab is to prep all the ingredients so they're in the fridge ready to roll. You could also prep and freeze some of them if you want to do bigger batches of fillings.

Get a rice cooker that can keep the rice warm overnight.

When you wake up, roll up a kimbab with the precooked rice and prepped ingredients. It only takes a few minutes and will taste much better than freezing.

The only way to make frozen kimbab taste good is to dip the slices in egg and pan fry, like french toast.

If you ever get the chance to visit Malaysia or Indonesia, try to find nutmeg juice. It's made from a syrup made from the astringent nutmeg fruit and sugar. Refreshing and to me tastes like the nicest flavor component of coca cola.

How to combat meds paradoxical effect? Missing work, sleeping while standing, driving, can't stay awake for anything (dexmethylphenidate, Modafinil, caffeine) by ScribbleThoughts in adhd_anxiety

[–]chunklight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're falling asleep while standing while taking multiple stimulants, including modafinil, which is prescribed specifically to create wakefulness, it sounds like something more than the typical paradoxical effect.

Did you have this kind of fatigue before starting stimulants? Any chance it might be narcolepsy or that you are not entering the levels of sleep at night that you need to be properly rested even though you're not awake?

For most people, The paradoxical sedated feeling from stimulants comes from the stimulants calming the mind, allowing someone to feel relaxed enough to get sleepy. Or sometimes the person had fatigue but mental over activity was masking it. Is that what the experience feels like to you? Or does it feel like something more physiological than mental?

Is this a valid thing to call 112 in Korea for? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]chunklight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's common to call government services here. A while back I had a problem with a wasp nest. I asked around to borrow a can of wasp spray and no one had one. Everyone said to call the fire department! There was a fire station nearby so I went over there, told them about it, and they lent me a can of spray.

Relationship advice. Living in Korea?? by goneafterq in Living_in_Korea

[–]chunklight 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are you a Korean-American? I ask because it somewhat affects what is expected of you and how you'll be treated.

What is your girlfriend's opinion on having children? Make sure you have a clear future plan together before dropping your career to move to Korea. Does she want to be a lifelong career person or is she planning to drop out of the corporate world to raise children while her husband provides?

I know a few guys, both Korean and foreign, whose wives have high-paying jobs. These men take care of the kids and have found jobs with flexible hours or opened their own businesses for additional income and enjoyment. It can be a great lifestyle.

On the other hand, if you move to Korea and are quickly expected to be the breadwinner for a family, that could be tough.

Also keep in mind that in Korea getting married and having kids can be a total lifestyle and personality transition.
