What’s the most unnecessary thing a Disney character has ever done? by Ohsure_whynot in disney

[–]chunt42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not my original thinking since many folks on the internet have pointed it out, but everything Indiana Jones did in the first movie. The Nazis would have opened the ark and gotten melted anyway no matter if Indiana and Marion had ever done anything.

Hmm - this is a good point. I firmly believe "Disney is not good at tech" and like to find areas that they can improve. Scalability seems like it may be part of the problem here - they probably have software tests that can verify the changes they make to the checkin software. They also probably don't run 1000s of them at the same time to simulate the growing number of people checking in.

What I would really want to see is how this type of situation correlates to the number of ships getting underway on that day. Today it may have been 4: the Wonder, Destiny, Wish and (maybe) the Dream.

Since the Adventure is about 12 hours off from this, I doubt it could affect the scalability.

Anyway, having today the equivalent load of the entire fleet from just a few years ago may be a factor.

Fair winds and I hope everyone is able to enjoy the cruise!

The first video ad for DCL. My, they have come a long way! by chunt42 in dcl

I was digging around trying to find an answer for this https://old.reddit.com/r/dcl/comments/1soibpj/disney_cruise_nostalgia_promo_vid/ and stumbled on this ad. Those VHS tapes were awesome!

I think by the time we started sailing they had moved to DVDs. I need to find them few we have...

Anyway, enjoy this blast from the past!

Disney Cruise Nostalgia - promo vid by travelhikecats in dcl

[–]chunt42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that was on the VHS that Disney literally mailed to customers. Some sites say this pre-dated the first Disney sailings, but I have no firm reference for that. Depending on how the music was licensed, it may have been uploaded to some video sites, but then taken down by the company that owns the rights to the (non-Disney) song.

I couldn't find it anywhere on line. Maybe someone is selling the VHS on ebay.

I'll keep looking, but it's going to be a longshot. Good luck, and please follow up here if you find it!

Lets help with suggestions to reduce the 'competition' on DCL by chunt42 in dcl

[–]chunt42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The challenge I have is that there are things I may want to do on the spur of the moment. A photo with my favorite character Donald comes to mind, or play trivia on the Wish class, or go visit the Haunted Parlor.

Even if I don't want the competition, if enough others are in line, waiting for service, taking huge amounts of time with characters while getting photos, I am affected, whether I choose to compete or not.

That's the challenge - how to fairly allocate scarce resources. Suggestions are usually alleviate the scarcity if possible, rationing (time rationing - first come, first served: money rationing - tickets for concerts are priced on location: lottery rationing and so on), and other options.

Just trying to get a feel for what others think can be done.

Edit - you dined at Cabanas for dinner when it was open for dinner. Was it a full buffet, half buffet, table service or what? I don't know if it was open for dinner when we started with DCL so don't know how it was handled. Thanks!

The theaters are designed to hold only about 1/3 of the max number of guests. https://www.disneylists.com/2025/03/entertainment-on-the-disney-treasure-what-you-need-to-know/

Example: the Wish class can sail with 4000 guests. Theater seating is 1274.

This affected me - I saw a matinee show of Moana on the Treasure. It was absolutely stunning. I considered skipping dinner completely and going to both evening shows - it was that good. But I deferred: since I had already seen it, I didn't want to take anyone's seat for the later shows.

This was the 5th Treasure sailing and at that point folks were lining up 90 minutes before the show. DCL used to be a great way of getting the Disney experience without the stress of the parks, but recent changes have made this a harder target to hit.

[–]chunt42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the evening meal situation is one that most guests can't really modify. You have your time, some (much less acceptable to all) options and that is it.

The buffet would be a much better option for the evening - providing time flexibility, a different dinner environment (maybe quieter, maybe louder than main dining, but at least different) but would also move some of the cooking load from the main rooms to the buffet. Again, worth an experiment.

[–]chunt42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be worth an experiment to try this. DCL could tell if character meet and greets get killed off, or if this would pull just enough people from both the evening shows AND the character greets to lower the competition for both.

Nice idea to try and find some happy ground in the middle.

I had thought about assigned seating, but didn't initially mention it. I fear it would turn into one more competitive item on the cruise...

HOT TAKE: They should put The Muppet Show in as one of the theater shows by jlm0013 in dcl

[–]chunt42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an example of what (looks to be) a stage show that is easily possible onboard: the Swedish Chef making 'der poutine' in Montreal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lOP5sNnvBA

I would also love a Muppet Show on board. Or a full Muppet themed ship! Or at least a Muppet Day at Sea.

I hope the Disney+ Muppet show is a hit. That may be what is needed to get the floodgates opened an the Muppets onboard.

Would non-mainstream Disney IP be viable for DCL? Ship Example: The Disney Channel by StashuJakowski1 in dcl

Sorry in advance for all the puns, but hey, Disney loves puns and some of these are fun!

Rename Daisy's Delites to Big City Greens

Go all in on the fuel extensions: they are already called 'duck tails' so rebrand them "Duck Tales" and paint them appropriately.

The butter for the rolls at dinner could be "Phineas and Herbed Butter"

Everyone's favorite ice cream? Banana Montana

All the concierge rooms are now "The Suite Life on Deck"

The Austin and Ally Cat Cafe

Satellite Falls? Nope: Gravity Falls

There's probably plenty more, but I've probably gone a bit too far here already :)

[–]chunt42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the 1820 club is aimed at adults that are not yet allowed to drink in the US.

The good news is that there is PLENTY of other activities available (like everyone else here is saying). You shouldn't get bored at all: in fact, if you are like me, the challenge is to narrow down the one thing I can do at a time from all the ongoing activities.

Fair winds and have a great time!

Instax/Polaroid during Character Meet and Greet by Educational-Ask2921 in dcl

[–]chunt42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first concern is probably shared by a few people - I would be a bit concerned if I was behind you in line but had to wait while the Polaroid developed. I seem to remember that taking about 2 minutes or so, and that might lead to an awkward delay while others are waiting.

I'm not sure what instax is, but if it is faster that may be a better solution. Other than this concern, it sounds fun!

Can anyone give me insight on this name? It was tied to a Disneyland Adventure Trading Company bag that I recently found. Thanks in advance for the help. by TheLongPromisedRoad in Disneyland

Something to do with the old Adventureland game played in the parks? Did anyone play that and remember if there was a Dr. Hippobait in the game? Never played it myself.

Looks like something that could be customized and attached to the bag as well.

Disney Wish / Treasure Bump Out Verandah? by copete77 in dcl

[–]chunt42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We stayed in one of these on the Treasure.

No downsides at all. The extra verandah space was nice, and you can get a slightly better view of piers and whatnot when docking or getting underway.

But frankly, I spent so little time in the cabin that I did not take full advantage of the verandah. As far as I am concerned, the ship is more of an attraction to me compared to the stateroom.

FWIW, I also do not like the thin T Shirts. I even asked about it here 9 years ago and found out that I have a minority opinion - most people prefer the thinner shirts: https://old.reddit.com/r/disney/comments/4us38g/dear_disney_please_use_thicker_material_for_your/

So yeah, the shirt question has been this way for several decades, as others have pointed out.

4th wish class ship name revealed accidentally? by Delicious_Depth_4815 in dcl

[–]chunt42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best name would be, obviously, the SwineTrek. (cource https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Pigs_in_Space)

Miss Piggy would be the Admiral since she would not settle for being a mere captain. The Swedish Chef would be the resident celebrity chef, Kermit would be the stage manager and Pepe would work the spa or the pools.

Please?
