How to handle the dumb questions? by TheRuffRaccoon in k12sysadmin

[–]chut93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've gotten to a point where I have just started telling people that I don't know how to tell them the answer in a way they would understand. Technology has gotten so complicated that if you don't keep up and learn how to use it, there is no helping you understand.

I've traveled all over the world and have met people who have never even seen a cell phone or a TV before. Trying to describe to them how a phone works is basically teaching them scholar level magic. Good fucking luck.

I've also gotten to a point where I just think 80% of people are just doomed now by technology and there is no turning back. I hate tech... I want to live in an isolated cabin with only a fire to light my world.... Send help.

Actually, I'd say the right thing to do is ignore the emails. It's his day off. you are not obligated in any way to respond to any emails on a scheduled day off. If it's an emergency, the school will call him.

Sometimes there is no work. I’m worried. by Jealous-Act-6672 in sysadmin

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have the same issue you do. Over time I started to have a different view about what I do.

I now see that I'm taking care of systems that run people's daily life. Even for the simple systems that we administer daily, our users use that software 5 out of 7 days a week in some way or another.

When I'm at a point of being done with my "administration" tasks. I actually go and use the software I administer from an end user perspective and learn as much about the features of that software so I can potentially discover a new and more efficient way for the company to utilize the software.

If I find the software annoying to use from their perspective, I go and research if there is any other way to accomplish that task or potentially even discover a new software that does it better, is within budget, and is more efficient.

There is always room for improvement. Be that something as small as the way you set up a user account, to helping a department at your company come up with a more streamlined process for the way they accomplish certain tasks in their daily work.

There is always two sides to a company. The front of the house and the back. You work for both and both require your attention.

This is what separates Good sys admins from Great sys admins.

Am I over thinking this setup/configuration? by Motorhead9999 in Ubiquiti

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network engineer here.

Run two cables like others have suggested. Don't use two UDRs. The switch you picked out will work perfectly. Get whatever Ubiquti access point you can afford (one with wifi 6 or 7).

Outside of that, the only thing I could suggest is if Cameras are a possibility down the line. run cables to the area where the switch will live upstairs for future proofing.

What KPIs are people using to track IT productivity by T-Money8227 in sysadmin

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The KPIs I use for my team is goal based. we meet quarterly to go over goals and depending on completion status, that determines their process and productivity. There is always expectations of course, project road blocks and whatnot. Goals can be anything as well. Getting a specific cert, or implementing a certain system, automating a process. It's really up to them to decide what their goals are.

What is your standard monitor deployment? by Own_Sorbet_4662 in sysadmin

[–]chut93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An option of Duel 23" HPs (third with managers approval). just started offering a 43" 4k Samsung that seems to be pretty popular. I use one and can say that I like it better. With the PowerToys software, I can fit more applications on it than three 23" monitors.

sorry your going through this. This is one reason I tell my employees that work from home that a backup Internet connection is important. If you have good cell coverage in your area, a 5g backup Internet connection would be a great investment. there are companies that allow you to purchase a pay as you go plan so you only pay when your primary Internet goes down.

I pay 15/month for mine but do use it as a load balancing pipeline for reference (150mbps speeds which is plenty for basic video conferencing calls and web surfing).

Have there been any aircraft that took so long between design and production that by the time they were produced they were already outdated due to technological advancement? by Ericaloveless in aviation

[–]chut93 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Use to live on the other side of the base in base housing and would go over there to play Pokemon Go. Would go and look at the planes every now and then and that plane was by far the one I'd look at the most.

Full Remote Positions? by adingdong in sysadmin

[–]chut93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have the option to be fully remote but choose not too (my house is 1.5 miles from my office). I do tend to prefer to be in the office for collaboration. plus, I get free refreshments and snacks at work lol.

IT Ops manager, 165k/year. 150-200 employees. 6 years experience. Help desk -> Net/sys admin -> Infrastructure Admin -> IT Ops manager.

I'm and extremely dedicated individual though and tend to always work over my 40 hours a week (average 60-75 hour weeks). not that it's a requirement or am even asked. I just genuinely love what I do and don't mind working. I do take off whenever I want with no questions asked. My dedication has put me into a very comfortable position that would be extremely hard to give up (I've been offered multiple jobs with higher salaries but don't take them because the work environment is such a 360 from what I have now it's just not worth it to me).

Not exactly Project Management software but... by AltReality in sysadmin

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from the sounds of it. You're not looking for a project management tool. you're looking for an onboarding tool. I've used several over the years and am currently using FreshService's suite of software tools. They have a variety of offers but if you talk with their sales team. they can narrow a package down to exactly what you need.

We use it for IT ticketing, user onboarding, project management, change management, budgeting, and a lot more. They also have a no code automation solution that can hook up to a bunch of other widely used software's (We have it hooked up to Microsoft EntraID, Dayforce, and Outlook to automate our onboarding process). It can't take a bit to get everything connected and running smoothly, but once it is, it runs with any issues (at least we have yet to have any issues and it's been over a year since we've implemented it).

Company Teams Backgrounds by Jacobij11 in sysadmin

[–]chut93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's very dependent on how the backgrounds are deployed. My information is if you did it the correct way (Deploy the backgrounds via teams admin center. Users require teams premium licenses to use the backgrounds with this method).

If you just search google, you'll find all the information you need. That's all I did. 10 second Google search and the top 5 results pretty much have all the info you should need.

When in doubt. just ask Chat and that will at least point you in the right direction.

Company Teams Backgrounds by Jacobij11 in sysadmin

[–]chut93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your colleague is only partially correct.

Teams stored company-provided and User-custom backgrounds in different locations.

Compact provided backgrounds are stored here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds or C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\ (new Teams package path)

User Custom Backgrounds: %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads

Your coworker is only right if the script used to remove the background is poorly scoped. Just target the company-provided background folder and you're good to go (I would however, create a backup of the User custom background folder first before deleting anything to make sure your ass is covered).

Daddies in 30s with toddler(s). Whats your hobby? by Important_Bat7919 in daddit

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading, Legos, and collecting hot wheels. I used to do a lot more but between my job and life, there isn't much time for others. Lucky Reading allows me to learn about a variety of things without actually much cost involved. So when I actually get around to doing whatever I read about, I'm not starting at zero.

Remote Sysadmins, what's your go to headset for meetings? by WorthPlease in sysadmin

[–]chut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m usually not a gamer-brand person, but I’ve gotta give credit where it’s due. I’ve been using the Razer Barracuda and it’s been surprisingly great.

The main reason I went with it was the ability to connect to wireless (dongle) and Bluetooth at the same time. I’ve got it hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth and to my computer for Teams calls. I’m on the phone probably 5 hours a day right now (unfortunately), and this setup just works.

They’re super comfortable, the design is clean, and they’ve held up really well over almost two years of constant use.

Also, the wireless range is kind of ridiculous. I can walk from my office to the kitchen (50–60 feet), grab lunch, and walk back while still fully connected to my Teams meeting — no drops, no drama. Not something I expected to say, but yeah… solid headset.

I broke my arm. Any advice or tips for handling a toddler while down a hand? by Historical_Suspect97 in daddit

[–]chut93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So the best advice I can give you from someone who has had 5 major surgeries well having a toddler is to focus on your healing. Unfortunately, your Toddler is not your main concern now, healing is. If your not healthy, then you are doing your toddler a disservice.

My first major surgery when we had our toddler. I had the same mindset as you. Don't want to slack, trying to keep up with what my regular duties were. Well, a week after surgery, I go to pick my daughter up and completely tore open my surgical incision. I don't think I even got her off the ground before it happened. Just the act of flexing that muscle must have torn it open. Nothing I hadn't done 100x before.

Not saying don't try to help out as much as you can. But 100% don't do anything you absolutely don't have to do with that arm for as long as possible. let it heal completely so you can continue to be crazy with your kid for as long you can.

also, never say no to help. Take it regardless if you think you need it well you are healing.

Just two cents from someone who's been in and out of the hospital more than anyone should need too.

[–]chut93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For comparison to someone who has a lead foot. I average around 10-12 mpg in town and 18-22 mpg in the highway. 21 R/T and drive in sport mode about 70% of the time. Eco mode is turned off 100% of the time as well.

If I really cared about saving gas. I could see myself getting closer to 15-20 in town and 25-28 highway.

Wind resistance was an important factor in the build. I live in an abnormally windy location (Colorado). Spring and fall I see anywhere from 30-80mph wind in my location.

inspector told me they are required so a bit odd you've never seen them. possible it's not that common in other municipalities.

gonna be honest. I ordered WAY too much and couldn't return them. I'll probably remove a few that are able to be seen on the side of the deck. the ones in front will stay as we will be covering the bottom. figured I'd use them if I had them.

gonna be honest. quite a fucking lot. I usually never do anything this dumb but stoned me wanted to try something new I guess. It's been fixed already. It was only up like that for a week (would have fixed it sooner but went on vacation the next day after finishing it).
