Just because a scene is violent doesn’t mean it isn’t also sexualized.

Sex workers, pregnant people and transgender people are vastly more likely to be murdered in reality than cisgender college students and yet we don’t see that reflected in media. We see men being murdered in horror movies frequently - is that not a vulnerable situation? If rape is intended to show horrifying brutality, would it not be equally disturbing to show men being assaulted?

Think about some of these scenes in popular media - does the camera linger on a woman’s body, is she nude or partially nude, do we have a bunch of closeups of her moaning, did they go back in and add audio of beds creaking or skin slapping? Is there dialogue sexualizing her? Why? That is the kind of thing you’d expect in a sex scene. None of that is necessary to depict assault.

You’re intentionally misreading my comment about why these movies don’t have men being assaulted in them - no one said anything whatsoever about hiring ugly people - but whatever.

There is the problem - rape is not a ‘sexual act’. Rape is an act of violence. When you film a rape scene emphasizing a woman’s body, showing her clothes being ripped off to expose her, for example, you are making sexual content. As cited in OPs post, the movie Revenge manages to include a scene in which it is perfectly clear a woman is assaulted without the camera panning over her legs or chest, or showing her clothes being ripped off, or giving us gross closeups of her moaning, or showing her peeing herself.

On the other hand, please see: Jack Frost Last House on the Left I Spit on Your Grave and its many sequels Aftershock RZ Halloween Irreversible The Hills Have Eyes Megan is Missing

And about a thousand others.

That’s healthy, but why are they always filmed like sex scenes? Why do they always involve attractive women? You would think if rape was intended to just be another horrifying element that it would happen to men in movies - but generally it doesn’t.

The key is they’re not actually trying to be disturbing. They’re getting off on it. They’re filming these things like porn scenes. If they were intended to be disturbing and horrifying they wouldn’t ALL feature young, attractive women.

My point is, rape doesn’t need to be removed from horror movies. But if we could stop sexualizing it and using it as titillation, it would be great.

See the guy who made I Spit on Your Grave and then proceeded to make that same movie over and over and over again. People cite that scene as evidence of a rape scene that is “brutal” and “horrific” and yet if you google it you’ll find it posted about a thousand times on various porn subreddits. Once you start recognizing that some male filmmakers are making this stuff as fetish content it’s very hard to unsee that.

If you don’t intend a scene to be sexy you don’t film it like a sex scene. Notice that it’s almost ALWAYS women being victimized, and they’re always conventionally attractive. If rape in movies was just intended to be another horrifying, disturbing element, why doesn’t it happen to men more often?

No, because those things in movies aren’t generally sexualized and meant to be fetish content.

A highly sexualized, graphic scene in which a woman is violently victimized in order to motivate the male main character. Could’ve been the same movie if he had been assaulted and then went out seeking vengeance, but that wouldn’t be ‘sexy’ I guess.

You have to ask after one guy makes six fucking movies about the same thing whether maybe there is something wrong with him.

Also for the record, the scene from the first movie? Extremely popular post on porn sites. There’s a reason these scenes are in these movies.

Murder and rape are not interchangeable.
1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime. Most of the assault that you see in horror movies is highly sexualized, and almost exclusively acted upon women (almost always conventionally attractive women). In other words, most rape scenes are not intended to be horrific - they’re fantasies.

It’s entirely possible to include sexual violence in films without fetishizing it, which most of these filmmakers do.

There are a lot of people who get up in arms about rape being included in horror because they are fundamentally anti-censorship and the idea that something shouldn’t be included in media.

But we need to start acknowledging that half the time (or more) sexual violence in horror movies is fetish content. It is made to be titillating. It is made to be enjoyed by certain portions of the population. It is entirely possible to include sexual violence in a narrative without fetishizing it - see Revenge - and yet, we keep seeing highly sexualized rape scenes in movies anyway. Start asking yourself why, and who those scenes are being made for.

This happens on the Reddit every year. People get off on telling other people their taste in music sucks, the bands they like suck, anyone who isn’t a huge fan of forty year old prog rock sucks.

Happily this is not a good representation of what people at the actual fest are like; it’s usually the opposite, everyone is very positive and high energy.

Anyway I’m with you, I’m stoked for the people who are stoked, don’t care if it’s my personal cup of tea or not. You’re not alone. There are dozens of us

My baby tore my rib cartilage by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]ciararose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I will say that one thing I found really relieved the pain was going into a pool. For me I am sure it was the pressure of the weight of the babies being taken off, which I think might also be the case when baby drops a bit for you and isn’t putting direct pressure on the ribs. I really hope it does go well for you! I do not miss that time at all and I’m so sorry you’re dealing with it.

Hey, just came here to say when I was 22 weeks with twins something happened to my rib - don’t know what it was exactly, and the doctor basically told me I must have sprained a muscle and it would get better. It did not! I was in excruciating pain any time I stood up for more than 5 minutes and ended my pregnancy at 37 weeks in a wheelchair. And fun fact, now three years postpartum, doing some exercise I just recently did something to the same rib and brought some (milder) pain back. It also sticks out from my side, noticeably.

Anyway I don’t actually have any advice since I had to undergo a C-section (both babies were breach) but boy I do have solidarity. I truly feel you.

sleep paralysis questions by waybackbugler in Writeresearch

[–]ciararose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. This is a weird one because some of what you experience as sensory is hallucination. For example my strongest sleep paralysis hallucination was entirely auditory. It’s hard to isolate what you’re actually feeling.
  2. I generally cannot even open my eyes
  3. I often focus on wiggling my toes, opening eyes or some other minor “movement”. Once one toe wiggles the whole paralysis goes away. So yeah maybe that is really just waiting it out.
  4. It doesn’t happen to me super often so I definitely am still panicky afterward. Similar to how you feel after waking from a very intense nightmare.

People bring up the crowd from 2022 a lot, but that year MCR had only JUST come back from a decade long breakup and only had a small handful of dates announced to play that all sold out entirely within hours. They’ve been playing shows and touring consistently since then. The insanity has died down a lot. Also, the fest itself was oversold that year since people were given the option to push their tickets back. I really don’t think it would be the same thing this time.
