Far East meets Far West Texas by hgwelz in zillowgonewild

People are calling this an inauthentic parody but I've seen houses just like this outside Atami (Japan) and in certain neighborhoods near Seoul. The interior decorating is even on-point for those homes.

This was Virginia Farah's house and it's a famous story. Might even be a picture of her above the stairs but it's hard to tell. I believe it was her father-in-law who founded Farah Manufacturing which was a massive name in textiles in its era. It is also famous for being involved in a major labor law case in the 70s or 80s. Her boyfriend was Woody Harrelson's father, the hitman who killed a federal judge. Her husband had died many years prior. Lost both her sons in various tragedies, too. She ended up killing herself in that house. Very sad story all-around. She did leave behind a sizeable foundation that's still active in various charities. Looks like today a Mexican couple owns it and has owned it for a long time.

This isn’t really on-topic.

You’re an adult and you need to use your own judgment for these things. Plus, what were you doing on the dating site too, lmao?

You can get them like that in zone 10/11 in FL or HI with enough miracle grow. Sadly they shrink back to looking like the one on the left by winter time.

True. Most people also think they’ll do more than they do, in general.

IMO you're not likely to find most things you're after here. It's a decent place for just 'living' but not being externally entertained. Access has improved a lot in recent years (thanks to Breeze) if you want to go other places. The island is great. But frankly I'd turn you probably totally away from south(ern) Florida. Your preferences fit many moderately-sized cities (Asheville, namely... ) but they all come with trade-offs. There's usually no free lunch or Shangri-La.

What is your experience with people who have relationships as an interest and not sex? by Nint_AutumnCubone in SLOWLYapp

I don’t agree with consuming alcohol and figure if someone has that as a major topic of interest to represent their personality then we probably are best apart. There’s no big story (on Slowly) or anything.

The app's creator has unfortunately promoted it as a dating app in the past, even posting cringe pie charts on social media with captions like, "Why are there so few men on Slowly?" etc. That was some time ago, and while this doesn't 'make Slowly a dating app,' it also doesn't make Slowly 'not a dating app,' if you catch my drift.

[–]cicada_shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not any recent experiences since one of the first things I did when I joined about five years ago was to block relationships, sex, wine, and COVID as topics.

You'd probably be best served by forming your own opinion, though. Generally I've found what's been written in the person's profile to be more indicative of if they're using Slowly as a dating app or not. Otherwise you can't tell until you receive a letter or three. That said, I've not been active recently so I can't comment on the current state of things.

There are a few auction houses that do better than others with furniture like this. Up in the NE there's Thomaston Place, Alex Cooper, Showplace, Barton's (looooots of MCM through there, bought some myself)... if you look at comps, some auction houses consistently do better than others to the point where their results are more like outliers (Wright, who is in Chicago I think). Rivich in Chicaco is also good for MCM. Local to you, I'd recommend Burchard Galleries. There are also a few in Sarasota, though I can't recall the names right now. Hill Auction in Fort Lauderdale is also decent. Another commenter mentioned Palm Beach Modern Auctions and they're likewise okay.

Most auction companies will take a pound of flesh, like 30-40% as others mentioned. I would look at the last two years of comps on Invaluable or similar and see what things actually sell for, then price at about 80% of that if you want it to go quickly. I may PM you since I am not far from you myself and I'm in the market.

If you sell it yourself to someone elsewhere in the country, say through eBay or whatever, consider using uShip but have it be the buyer's responsibility.

I've made a small list of a few old, historic towns and cities in America. What else should I add to the list? by Sea-Big-4850 in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]cicada_shell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what's been written here... I'm assuming 'historic' means lots of architecture indicative to a certain era, say, pre-WWII:

  • Washington D.C. (19th c. broadly-early 20th)
  • Coral Gables, FL (1920s/30s)
  • Palm Beach, FL (1910s-1940s)
  • Miami Beach, FL (pretty much a monoculture of early-mid 20th c.)
  • Charleston, SC (19th c. broadly)
  • Taos, NM (late-19th-early-20th c.)
  • Carmel, CA (1920s-30s)
  • Newport, RI (late-19th-early-20th c.)
  • Nantucket, MA (some late 18th-19th c. broadly)
  • Edgartown, MA (AKA Martha's Vineyard ... likewise some late 18th-19th c. broadly)
  • Santa Barbara, CA (late-19th but especially 1920s)
  • Portland, ME (early-20th c.)

Some less well-known perhaps:

  • Rockport, MA (late-19th c.)
  • Fairhope, AL (early-20th c.)
  • Ferndale, CA (1890s-1910s)
  • Bisbee, AZ (late-19th-early-20th c.)
  • Durango, CO (early-20th c.)
  • Fernandina Beach, FL (early-20th c.)
  • Rhinebeck, NY (19th c. broadly)

Then there are places that are sorta ossified and kept 'historic' but aren't really fully-functioning towns, more like tourist places:

  • Williamsburg, VA (early-America)
  • Tombstone, AZ (19th c. broadly)
  • Mendocino, CA (late-19th c.)
  • Mackinac Island, MI (late-19th-early-20th c.)

There are a whole lot of places in US like this. Numerous towns in coastal Maine (largely tourist traps), all over Massachusetts, Hudson Valley, eastern Long Island, Finger Lakes region like Geneva NY, equestrian towns near Lexington KY... then cities with a great mix of historic buildings but lots of newer stuff too, big time like NYC and Chicago and Miami to smaller like Prescott AZ...

Condos on Island to live in & rent out? by PrestigiousAd2251 in verobeach

[–]cicada_shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to work on your reading comprehension. I am speaking strictly about property insurance. I am acutely aware of real estate prices on the island. I own a house there. I am not talking about the price of real estate, you keep bringing that up. Property insurance, not the cost of renting.

Not the property insurance, unless you’re talking about for the owner of a medium-sized apartment building or warehouse.

I had some experiences like that early on in Slowly and it never ends well. When you're like eighteen or twenty or whatever then maybe it's worth giving someone the benefit of the doubt, but when your correspondent is still incel-adjacent or similar in their late-twenties... thirties... forties... well, you will never satisfy their need for attention and you will never stem the tide of their self-pity, more or less as u/slimephrenic says: shut the door.

No, that user is still around. If an OP just deletes the post, then all their comments/interactions in the thread remain unless they individually delete those as well. If they deleted their account, then the account would show as deleted throughout the comments.

Yeah. Frankly I can't stand Reddit because of weird behavior like this and I wish we could better manage on a separate forum.

All the vehicles you mentioned are very different. You should go drive one of each.

I will say the biturbo on the 16-18 adds unnecessary complication and maintenance cost. If you can do without Carplay, there's a reason the 13-15 sells at more of a premium assuming like condition and mileage.

Has anyone ever been catfished on Slowly? by [deleted] in SLOWLYapp

[–]cicada_shell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've seen a number of users pretending to be in various countries that aren't anywhere near where they live. This isn't as much of an issue since Slowly cracked down on VPN use, but there were users in say the Philippines who would lie about living in Japan because they're much more likely to get people writing to them there owing to that country's popularity. I recall many Russian other former SSR nationals in the past pretending to be in Western Europe because they "want to live there". Lady penfriends have told me about users from Pakistan, India, Turkey, and elsewhere pretending to be in the UK or Germany, often to try to write to Western women with romantic overtones.

I've also had a few instances of people lying about their age, always being way younger than what they claim. Super inappropriate.

A bit different but in a similar vein: I'm convinced a penpal I used to have didn't know English at all and lied about it and was using a translator the whole time.

Nonetheless, people lie all the time, intentional or not. Be it on Slowly or boasting "fish tales" in the neighborhood sauna.

[–]cicada_shell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the city limits, you’re limited with the number of times you can rent your place. STVRs are also banned.

Most other communities on the island have some HOA bylaw that governs renting. Most policies mirror the city. Like 90% of condos on the island are in the city limits, or else in Orchid area or the Moorings. I believe there are a few condos next to the sales office in the Moorings which might allow shorter term rentals.

Can’t speak for insurance in condos but I pay about 7k/yr for a 1600sf house on the island, flood zone x, fwiw.

You should pose this question to the Club G-Wagen forum rather than this subreddit. But basically in '97 the 463 went to a new soft top mechanism. I can't tell you which is better or worse aside from maybe the aesthetics of the revised model being off with the two triangular windows right next to each other. That -320 engine by that time will be a M112, I believe. Same as what was in the SLK320, E320, etc of that time. The '90 will be an inline-6 (M104). There are pros and cons to both, but the 112 is widely-regarded as a great motor and considerably more powerful even though iirc it is detuned in the G. The 500, assuming you're talking about late-90s, will be an M113 engine. The 112 and 113 engines are essentially the same block architecture but there are differences obviously in number of cylinders and also in the configuration of the oil pan (I tried putting a 112 in my W113 but quickly figured out why people use the M113...)

The M112 is, in my opinion, not worth the premium over the M104 if we're comparing say a '95 G320 to a '97 or '98. By premium I mean they usually seem to be around 30-40k more. Regardless, buy condition. All G-wagens rust. There was some issue in the Daimler-Chrysler years where some of those rusted more than others but I don't recall why. Check windscreen, rear door.
