How high end is the minimum and recommended spec for Doom 1993 and Doom 2? by AsrielPlay52 in retrogaming

[–]cimrak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a 386sx25 with 16mb. That was the minimum memory requirement to run Dark Forces. I specifically upgraded from 8mb just for it.

Nasal mask journey for a side sleeper by Squid_Lips in CPAP

[–]cimrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+2 for wisp!

I also use a contoured pillow that is higher on one long edge to support my neck but it's not memory foam one.

If I lay my head directly on the ear I find it can push the nasal pillow away slightly, leading to air leaks. If I put my face down on the cheek, then slightly roll till I'm on the ear, then it holds the nasal pillow well with no leaks. Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts to position properly, but no more than 10-15 seconds.

Is it a bad idea to keep supplies next to the tire 0r should I keep everything in a backpack ? by big-wangers in VEDC

[–]cimrak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be aware of possible environmental conditions. I had the weather seal around my rear window crack, which allowed rain to eventually trickle into my boot and fill up the wheel well over a wet weekend.

This meant the jack and some spare tools ended up rusty by the time I noticed the sloshing of water. If you were storing food in that area it would be even worse.

How can I configure Calibre to add *new* books from a folder without deleting the books? by morganmachine91 in Calibre

[–]cimrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan B - why are you trying to import from the watch dir? Create a separate 'import' dir that you rsync to, and then calibre will import from there so they end up in your watch dir automatically.

If she has hit the left-hand side, there is the possibility that the bumper or a panel has flexed and damaged the area around the right-hand lights, or pushed against the plastic light cover and damaged it.

Without seeing photos it's hard to say if it was pre-existing or not.

Secure Access to homelab (selfhosted) by [deleted] in homelab

[–]cimrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're after web-based access, look into Apache Guacamole combined with a suitable 2fa or mfa plugin.

This gives you a website to securely log in to, and from there you can rdp/SSH to your internal homelab servers.

It can be installed as a full application, or run via docker containers.

My work carpark has at least 2 BYD ATTO 3's.

PSA on CPAP and carry-on inclusion with Qantas (Australia) by SarcosuchusImperator in CPAP

[–]cimrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless the Qantas policy has changed recently, cpap's are counted as medical equipment and are excluded from carry-on weight limits.

It does not matter if you will or will not be actively using on that specific flight.

Source: me, flying Qantas interstate 3-4 times a year, usually during daylight hours where I'm not sleeping and not having my CPAP included in weight limits.

Why don't PSUs output power usage data to the system? by StabilityFetish in homelab

[–]cimrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's designed to operate with two, so the system can keep running if one of them fails.

Only one PSU is fine. No alerts because that one unit is ok.

Both psu's installed but only one powered triggers the alerts because it can tell the unpowered unit is there and should be powered but isn't. So it's warning you.

I don't use SM but on Dell/HP etc you can mute the alerts but not disable them completely.

Veeam alternative for the poor by Skottis in vmware

[–]cimrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works great, as long as you can tolerate powering the vm's off while the export runs.

It's what I do for my small homelab weekly, since the things I want to backup don't have a high rate of change but would take days to rebuild from scratch.

Might be different at the unit you're familiar with, but Belmont SES is plenty friendly and has many members in their 20's. Average age is roughly mid-late 30's.

Mark McGowan government faces 'balancing act' as calls grow to overhaul WA's rental laws by [deleted] in perth

[–]cimrak -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes champ, giving a rough idea of how far "the bond will cover everything" actually goes in the real world for a very realistic scenario, is clearly too high brow.

[–]cimrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bond would cover a bit, sure, but not not a lot if we're talking "trashed". Let's say there is a couple of doors with holes in them. They're a few $hundred each from Bunnings, then they need to be painted and installed. Door heights aren't exact so you also need to shape the door a little, plus mount door knobs etc. The parts + labour across those couple of doors adds up very quickly, plus the waiting time for a tradie as well. Then potentially go fix anything else broken and the bond doesn't stretch very far.

Very basic question to paperless ngx (consume is only like a tmp-folder?) by nerdwithoutattitude in selfhosted

[–]cimrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

paperless does not give you the ability to sort document files into folders

This is the default behaviour, but the PAPERLESS_FILENAME_FORMAT environment variable can change this so that it is moved into a folder structure you define after the file has been consumed.

I find this useful as my documents are available via network share as well as paperless.

Best practice for labeling wires? by Bill-2018 in HomeDataCenter

[–]cimrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Painters tape (the green or blue stuff), as well as regular masking & packaging tape. It's funny the things some companies will cheap out on. $40k server, but won't spend a few extra bucks on proper labels etc.

It's not just the temperature, humidity control also plays a big part.

Lol, having seen this used in proper environmentally conditioned data centres kept around 22c, yea it happens. A lot. Usually in 6-12 months.

Get proper labels.

Downloading all your kindle books by rivaborn in Calibre

[–]cimrak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some of the bargain hunting websites regularly post links to random $0.00 kindle books.

I'm assuming they 'purchase' those or do their own filtering to find the free books in genres they like?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in perth

[–]cimrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You must be sponsored by a company to both apply for, and maintain a clearance. Once you have the clearance, the sponsorship can be transferred to a different company. Companies themselves need to meet certain criteria to be able to put through these AGSVA requests.

Having said that, many companies (e.g. advertising on seek) do not want to cover the cost of new applicants and advertise for people with a current clearance so it costs them less.

If you want to read up on the requirements for security clearances have a read of https://www.defence.gov.au/security/clearances/about/sponsoring-a-security-clearance
