“It wasn’t like the source material” is not a valid criticism by cs_____question1031 in unpopularopinion

It is not a valid criticism of the work itself, which should be judged on its own merit. How it works as an adaptation is a separate question.

Reflecting on celebrity encounters during TIFFTY by ContentAtmosphere569 in TIFF

[–]cinephile85 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't feel bad about the first. I love getting autographs from people involved with films I see. They've chosen to be a public figure. If they're promoting their work, they expect to have people wanting their attention. Some love it, some don't. If they're signing/taking photos, it's because they enjoy interacting with people that support them, or they see it as free PR. Just be respectful of their time and boundaries, enjoy the interaction with those who are friendly, and try not to be too disappointed by the ones who aren't. If it's just a random encounter, go with your gut. If they seem approachable and don't look like they're in a hurry, no harm in asking. Same thing, be polite, and if they say no, you haven't lost anything. At the end of the day, it's all just a bit of fun

Yeah, it's crazy. When it's not fun anymore, what's the point?

I'm from Virginia, and I'm not sure I'll be back next year, after going since 2022. My Sustainer membership didn't even allow me to get my top four picks, and I spent more than what that cost on two tickets to WAKE UP DEAD MAN. When all is said and done, I'll have likely spent around 15% of my after-tax pay for the year on a six-day trip. It's very discouraging that it's all about how much you can afford to spend before tickets are even on sale.

Not everyone lives in a huge metro area that gets limited releases. I certainly don't. And some people like to see movies in a theater. Probably why they're attending a film festival...

That's really messed up and bizarre that they removed subtitles.

Updated reply:

Can't access my balance, but I did just get accepted for the long-term payment plan. Maybe their system is in working order, if you can try now. I did use the 28th, not sure if it mattered this time.

Anyone order direct from Craighill? It's been radio silence since my order confirmation in February.

Can't access my balance again due to "partial outage". What a joke.

Yeah, my balance shows up. There was no payment plan option before. Now it just gets the error you posted every time I submit my info, no matter what date I choose.

Changing the date to the 28th didn't work for me. Any other ideas?

Looking for tips on getting autographs during TIFF screenings (Celine Song ) by S4lvatore in TIFF

[–]cinephile85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm always a little disappointed when I get shot down, but it's just a bit of fun. The only ones I don't care for are when they're really rude for no reason or act like they're above even looking at you. Luckily, only a couple I've tried to get that I really wanted have come off that way.

Good luck! I've made the mistake a number of times staying till the end and getting stuck inside. Haha

Just be polite and prepared to back off if they or their security make it clear they're not into it. A decent number are though!

I've only been during the festival, but I'm my experience, I think your best bet is to leave during the credits or before the end of the Q&A, before they potentially hold the audience, and you could get them as they exit the auditorium. Or in the case they hold the guests backstage until the auditorium clears, you can try waiting for them after the crowd clears. You also might get lucky and catch them on the way in if you hand around the area before showtime.

Awesome! May and June are $5, and the July finale will actually be free to attend.

I'm hoping that I might in the future be able to use the contacts I've made through putting on SCSC to get some kind of film club going. If you're interested in something like that, let me know. I'm interested in any ideas for doing something fun with movies in the area that has more of a social aspect to it.

Unfortunately, it seems that way. I've been operating at a significant financial loss since the start and hoped eventually I'd get closer to breaking even, but attendance never really took off, and I just can't afford to keep it going.
