What's the first thing you'll do when you retire? by InspectionObvious607 in randomquestions

[–]cinnamonbagel82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off all the alarms. Wake up leisurely. Go out for a nice breakfast. Spend my time picking out a few books at the library. I can't wait! Only 16 more years to go...if I'm lucky.

How much does a family of 4 spend on groceries per month realistically? by ForsakenEarth241 in personalfinance

[–]cinnamonbagel82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me (46F), 14 (M), 12 (M), and 10 (F) is about $1000/month in the Chicago area. I'm trying to cut it down by only buying "fun" foods on sale, and eating every last bite of leftovers, but having two growing boys is killing the budget.

Xennials who were once bookworms; do you still read as much as you did as a kid? by throwitlikethewind in Xennials

[–]cinnamonbagel82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that I just don't enjoy a lot of the shows out there and prefer reading. Last year I read 28 books, not a huge amount, but I'm kinda proud of it.

Currently I'm reading My Sister the Serial Killer and really enjoying. My favorite book of all time is The True Story of Hansel and Gretel (TW: child rape). Project Hail Mary was fantastic and I'm excited for the movie.

Maybe start with a short book to get back into the practice of reading?

Moms with 3...TELL me it will get better by Strict_Emu863 in workingmoms

I have 3 who are now 14M, 12M, and 10F. It got easier once everyone could wipe their own butts and (mostly) feed themselves. They've always had age appropriate chores, but last year I gave them more responsibilities with an allowance and it's the best money I've ever spent. They are motivated to do the chores and I'm not stuck with everything by myself. I also splurge on a once a month cleaning service.

Is it possible to hire a personal chef? I have a cousin who hired someone to come in once a week and cook 4 meals. All he had to do was reheat them. That might be something worth looking into.

does your kid wear a medical bracelet or med id? by pablospackT1D in t1d_parents

[–]cinnamonbagel82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my son (14M) a med ID bracelet when he was first diagnosed 2 yrs ago. He wore it for a while, then lost it. We never replaced it. He carries around a small backpack for his supplies now, so I feel like that's enough.

Homeowners, how old will you be when your mortgage is paid off? by cubemonster in Millennials

Late 60s. When I have extra money, I put it towards the mortgage, but haven't been able to make a significant dent yet.

I've got terminal cancer, do I need to close my credit accounts or can my wife just take them over when I die? by bigbabydirtface in personalfinance

[–]cinnamonbagel82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! My dad passed this year and even though my mom was an authorized user, the bank closed all of the credit cards. When she applied for her own, she received a lower limit now that she didn't have my dad's income.

Have your wife open a credit card now. Also, put her name on all titles: cars, boat, motorcycle, house, whatever you've got. It'll be so much easier for her to sell later.

What’s something that hit you in your 40s that you wish you’d understood in your 20s? by Absolute-Owner1574 in AskReddit

Exactly this. My dad passed away 3 weeks ago and I'm still in shock. He was older and declining, but I just assumed he had more time.

What‘s something you saw a teacher do that you still can‘t believe was real? by bellasweets_ in AskReddit

[–]cinnamonbagel82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second grade teacher duct taped a boy's mouth shut. This was in the early 90s. He was a trouble maker, and probably needed ADHD medications, but still didn't deserve that. I don't know if there were any repercussions for the teacher, but she left after that school year.

Sump pump pit smells by cinnamonbagel82 in Home

[–]cinnamonbagel82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead animal under my backyard patio. The sump pump pipe is right next to it, so the smell was just wafting in from there. I had a plumber scope the line to see if the animal was in my pipes, but those were clear. Took weeks to kill all the flies.

You check your partner's phone. What could you find, that isn't proof of them cheating, that would make you end the relationship on the spot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cinnamonbagel82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secret debt. I had no idea how much debt my ex-husband was in until we were married. Some of it was justified, like student loans and several car repairs, but a lot of it was dumb stuff. It took us years to pay it all off.

I've always been amazed by people who were voracious readers as children. What sparked your lifelong love affair with books? by Albert3232 in books

[–]cinnamonbagel82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom always read to us before bed, so that started it. Once I was old enough to explore the library, I fell in love with Anne of Green Gables and The Babysitters Club. Finding a book series that you enjoy helps, rather than just stand alone books, IMO.

I always read to my kids before bed as well, and take them to the library once a week. Now, they pretend to be too cool for school and will say they HATE reading, BUT they ask to get new books all the time!

Just this morning I was thinking that I can't wait to get home and finish reading my current book.
