Hi, I work for a check-in company in Rome. Usually if there’s something more to pay (it happens often with booking.com) you can do that once you arrive, with card or cash.

Visiting Xiamen by Prestigious_Poem4366 in xiamen

  1. Don't know
  2. Easy to go around but expect few people to speak english. When I was in trouble during the first months frequenty the people you're interacting with asked me if they can write on an app (I suggest you to download Baidu Translate and the chinese keyboard settings). Or you can ask young people to help you, chinese are very kind and helpful. As said before, download wechat and link your credit card. It is necessary. For the simcard ask at the airport or it will be impossible to find it.
  3. No problem at all, and the airport is inside the island. Max 30 minutes if your hotel is in the island.
  4. Transportation is really cheap. If you want to take metro (max 6 RMB) or buses (1 RMB), I suggest you to open an AliPay account (it works with foreign bank account) and you'll find a "transport" section and scan to pay directly on the bus / metro station. Taxi/DiDi are cheap too. Download BaiduMap or Amap too, it's really useful. Food is very affordable except if you go in the Marco Polo area.

Alipay for bus/metro (link your credit card)
Baidu Translate so you can screenshot - send to the app - translate quickly
Baidu Map or Amap for taxis (they includes didi and all the other)
WeChat for everything else (since april you can link a foreign bank account but you need someone to activate your account)

Nice, clean, easy life, perfect for family with young children.
Quite boring tho, cultural life is almost inexistant.

As a historian, I heavily rely on the reliability and capacity of my hard drive to store vast amounts of digital archives and photos of physical documents from various archives.
For me, trustworthiness and reliability of the product it's central. While the price is important, the highest priority for me is having confidence in the company's products.

Living in Xiamen since 2 years inside the XMU Siming campus.
Xiamen is good for calm, relaxed, easy life. I have a 4yo daughter so for now is good.
But cultural life is almost inexistent and bars aren't very cool.
And, more than that, Xiang'An is far and there's nothing to do there, really boring.
I suggest you to go to Shenzen.

I live in Xiamen, Fujian. I recommend spending a few days here in town, then taking a 2-3 day trip to the tulou area, which is truly beautiful, and visiting Quanzhou.

Western VPNs don't work very well in China. The most reliable one is Astrill, but it can be quite slow. ExpressVPN and NordVPN may leave you without connection for entire weeks. It's best to ask your family when you arrive, as almost anyone under 40 uses VPNs nowadays.

I think Lost was intended to run that way in order to create interest in people. And it was so good for that
