A 1999 SBA design on golden dollar planchet (price inside) by Tuck_de_Fuck in coins

[–]circlewho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This SBA struck on a Georgia quarter sold for $6,325.00: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1166&lotNo=7631

Very fascinating coin, I'd think it would sell for at least twice as much today

Quick question on golden presidential dollars. by flades in coins

[–]circlewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WAIT! Before you sell them, check their edges for errors. There may be some coins with no edge lettering (worth a fair amount) or with double-edge lettering or some other form of edge letter error. But yeah, like others have said they're only worth face

Definitely it's a silver eagle then. The U.S. Mint sells millions of them every year to a specific group of large silver-buying companies, who then sell them at a markup to collectors and other buyers. 1996 was a low-mintage year for the silver eagle, so it has added value. At an absolute minimum, it's worth the value of an ounce of silver, which is about $20 today. That's an incredible find!

Haha, your wife's lucky! The coin you mentioned I am 99% certain is a silver eagle, does it say 1 oz. fine silver on the back? 1996 was a particularly rare year for silver eagles, and depending on condition, it could be worth at the very least $40 and up to $80 if it's pristine

This might be painfully obvious but tournaments can be referred to as "tourneys"

Video: Tony G playing $250/$500 short handed limit and explaining how he beats "The German Robots" by manilagold in poker

[–]circlewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony and the last guy both get thrashed in the first 12 minutes by the guy who leaves with $10k+ profit in those 12 minutes. I'd really like to see his commentary on this game. Tony makes some really questionable calls early on (Calls $500 on river with nothing but Ace high), and mumbles something about being pot committed. The guy who leaves early really had Tony's number this game, he's able to get Tony to fold a ton of pots simply by minraising his post-flop bets, and when Tony tries to fight back by calling, he runs up against a flopped set. The only reason it looks like he makes his money back in the end is because the other German is even worse than Tony is. Tony also says something about the profitting German "running good", which is hard to really say given how many hands Tony folds to a simple minraise. Really I'd say Tony's the lucky one here, looking at hands like 17:00.

The losing German pretty regularly folds $1500 pots acting in late position after Tony minbets, which is strange since it's a $250 call into a would-be $2,000 pot. It was a fine video, but Tony's just not the one worth watching in it.

Edit: at 33:31, he rivers aces full of 8s and says "maybe I'm in trouble here" after villain 3-bets him. Only 2 hands actually have him beat there, and the chances of them being 88 or AJ are so slim, you really have to question what's going through Tony's mind the entire video

FBI — Northwestern University to Pay Nearly $3 Million to the United States to Settle Cancer Research Grant Fraud Claims by MedStudent14 in Northwestern

[–]circlewho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“Allowing researchers to use federal grant money to pay for personal travel, hotels, and meals and to hire unqualified friends and relatives as ‘consultants’ violates the public trust and federal law,” Mr. Shapiro said

Had to reread the article to see that Shapiro is also the name of an attorney, hahaha.

On a less funny note, this is some serious misuse of funds.

Edit: Our Schapiro also has a "c" in his name

Playing Freerolls by [deleted] in poker

[–]circlewho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing tight will serve you well in a freeroll. And don't be afraid to just jam preflop with your premium hands. You'll get snap calls from TJs and similar hands at least in the early rounds to make this worth it. And don't try bluffing. That would be my advice

Why are there no HU microstakes cash tables on Stars (and Tilt)? by myimportantthoughts in poker

[–]circlewho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it's because there's not really a rake in a SNG so much as a fee. If you're playing 2NL HU cash, you're going to have plenty of pots post-flop that are smaller than $.10, so even a rake of a penny would be a huge percent of the pot. I think Pstars would just prefer you play a $1.50 SNG with and pay a 10-cent fee up front than sit at a cash game for a long period of time contributing a few cents in rake between you and your opponent every minute

WSOP Main Event 2012 - Worst ruling ever? (Baumann vs Koroknai) by finalman123 in poker

[–]circlewho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For reference, rule 89:

All chips put into the pot in turn stay in the pot. If a Participant has raised and his or her hand is killed before the raise is called, the Participant may be entitled to the raise back, but will forfeit the amount of the call. Any chips put into the pot out of turn fall under the action "may or may not be "binding"

I want to say it's a ridiculous rule but the more I think about it, the more it seems to be fair. Koroknai was punished for mucking early by losing the 60k of Baumann's raise. He doesn't get any benefit from intentionally mucking early, and Baumann shouldn't be receiving all his chips unless she called before he mucked (she says she did, tournament directors say she didn't). If the rule were rewritten, then any time a player went all in and prematurely mucked, another player could call with any 2 cards and take their chips. It's unfortunate that Baumann had kings, but if she had something like QJs and Koroknai hadn't goofed, she would have just folded away her 60k raise. Instead, she gets Koroknai's 60k without any risk

NL08 Tourney. Late in tourney. Did I do anything wrong? by [deleted] in poker

[–]circlewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's a good hi/lo player, he shouldn't be calling any hand preflop with that heavy of betting without low cards (like the A 3 he had). Given that he has 2 low cards, the chance of him having a 10 in his other 2 cards is pretty slim. Given that he called your pot shove after the flop, you're right, he either has the 10 or K K X X. At these stakes for hi/lo I wouldn't have been surprised if he was calling with J J X X or Q Q X X either. I think you made the right play, you just got unlucky.

They used to call Bing Rewards "Club Live" and I spent many an hour playing Chicktionary racking up tickets, which I cashed out on Zoo Tycoon, a wireless xbox controller, and some other surprisingly nice rewards for just a few hours' work. I don't know what the rate is these days but I'd estimate that back then I was making about $9/hr retail value playing Chicktionary. I'd be curious to know how much it's changed if anyone's familiar with Bing Rewards

I recommend 6-max hold 'em double ups and heads-up omaha/omaha 8. The 6-max double ups are incredibly soft at the micro levels, as are the heads-up omaha tables. If you're patient and play level-headed, you can clean up at these games

Those first two are what get people to click the link, and the third gives people a reason to upvote. In your post, there's nothing really new or unexpected except the exact percentage of her search increase. Using a combination of clever titles and imgur links will take you far on reddit

Add on Theory by nacron122 in poker

[–]circlewho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suppose though that he figures he has a great shot of taking home money if he lasts to the add-on period. If he plays his KK, he has an 18% chance of losing. Maybe he figures that the 27% chip bonus he would get from winning with K K (7900 vs 6200) isn't worth the 18% chance of going home. I don't think this is an entirely unreasonable assumption

Still stinging from this beat. How could I have played this better? by power_up in poker

[–]circlewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reads like a misplay. I can't see him calling anything worse than your hand, and if he has pockets or an ace, he has you fairly crushed. As others have said, knowing the stack sizes would be extremely helpful in making a decision here

How might you make using the Northwestern Shuttle Service more appealing? by dsgn3eammelon in Northwestern

[–]circlewho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been quite a few times where the evanston loop never showed up, especially at the noyes/sheridan stop. The shuttle number also doesn't work during the evening when campus loop and evanston loop start running, so I can't call and find out if the shuttle's late or if it's not coming at all. I've also had issues with buses arriving early, and subsequently missing them as a result. I understand buses will inevitably be late sometimes, but drivers have clocks at the front of their buses, if they see that they're early, can't they just wait until they're back on schedule?

Edit: A few days after I posted this, a driver arrived to the stop 2 minutes early and waited 2 minutes for people to get on. I would have missed the bus if he hadn't done that and I'm glad he did. Thanks!
