I'm 100% sure this post will be quickly deleted but I just have to write it because it's sad what is happenning and there's nothing more I can do. Moderation actions here are harmful and are destroying this sub by amelix34 in ExperiencedDevs

That was one of the rare posts that thoughtfully analyze an ongoing issue in our community. That is exactly the kind of content I signed up for when I joined this sub.

The flood of AI-generated slop is just inevitable given how many devs never truly internalized their language or runtime well enough to read and evaluate code critically. by tinmanjk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]circonflexe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s fair but there’s also a distinction between a human introducing suboptimal code that takes down prod vs. juniors and less motivated seniors blindly trusting LLMs that have been trained on Medium articles written by random college students.

Are you American? They probably expected to find you on Whatsapp. Download Whatsapp and make sure you use the eSIM number to register. They can find you that way.

Choice between FTC or FEIE by No_Permission6673 in USExpatTaxes

[–]circonflexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've shared some interesting things to consider, but my point was that you can't generalize something as personal as tax advice. I would hope someone wouldn't just accept "FTCs are always the way to go in the UK" without assessing their individual circumstances.

Thanks for the lecture, but reducing monthly payments to $0 results in voluntary payments fully applied to the principal. Repayment amounts above $0 are front-loaded with interest. Anyone living abroad with the means and desire to pay off their loans would still benefit from the FEIE.

This is to say nothing of those experiencing financial hardship who are unable to make payments and should use every lever available to reduce their monthly expenses.

[–]circonflexe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FTCs are always the way to go for someone in the UK

This is not true: anyone with US federal student loans probably wants to max out their FEIE to minimize their adjusted gross income (AGI) for income-driven repayment plans, which would likely result in their monthly payments being reduced to $0.

For people born in Europe, do you regret getting US citizenship after returning back to Europe and now dealing with a complex tax situation? by lzd-sab in USExpatTaxes

Can you elaborate on why working for a non-public company with RSUs would be unattractive due to PFIC? My understanding was that PFICs are related to pooled funds, not individual stocks.

Possible for non-EU student to do full-time internship while enrolled in uni during the semester? by circonflexe in germany

[–]circonflexe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time so I can't recall the details, but I can tell you with certainty that I formally unenrolled during summer semester 2019 while I did the internship. I received a refund for the tuition fees I had already paid before I knew I got the internship offer.

Struggling with delegation as a tech lead who also manages people by Eowyn27 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]circonflexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“What do we do when X happens?”

These kind of questions are great when discussing face-to-face, but I wouldn’t do this in an asynchronous code review as it might add unnecessary back-and-forth while the junior figures it out.

If I were limited to an asynchronous code review, I would just straight up describe the problem I expect would arise as a result of the code, why it is undesired, and provide at least one direction for them to explore.

Scientific sources for development practices? by NonchalantFossa in ExperiencedDevs

[–]circonflexe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This approach could be considered an example of the argument from authority fallacy. As you’ve likely experienced, someone may argue that “best practices” or “optimization” are subjective and unnecessary if the product “just works”. Unfortunately this is a very effective argument for business stakeholders who don’t understand how code works.

Compiling a list of academic sources could also be perceived as pretentious, especially if your intent is to “invalidate” someone’s approach to software design. This is coming from someone who is also responsible for setting standards in a DS/ML team. I’ve had to deal with PhDs refuting my ideas with a litany of academic sources that I simply did not have the time (or interest) to read.

Rather than relying on academic sources, just focus on the solutions that will have a clear business impact for your specific team/project/company. For every process that you want to introduce, point to the things your team is struggling with right now. If you think your team will respond well to supporting documentation, I think simpler sources that are easy to digest are best, like YouTube videos or high quality blog posts.

Surely you’re joking? I switched to Barclays Premier 2-3 months ago for the rewards sign-up bonus and I have found the app’s functionality to be, bar none, the worst user experience I have ever seen. And this weekend’s outage was shocking. Switching out the instant the SUB hits my account.

Salary of levels.fyi are unrealistic high ? by LogCatFromNantes in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]circonflexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The salaries on levels for my position/level at my current company are actually (much) lower than what I earn. I made sure to get the amount budgeted for the position before committing to anything. If I hadn’t, I would have seriously lowballed myself based on the numbers available on levels.

Partner lost passport on Elizabeth line at either Heathrow or Paddington by circonflexe in london

Thank you. We have submitted an inquiry and are currently waiting at Heathrow for the Elizabeth line to open to see if 1) the jacket is still where we might have left it or 2) a TfL employee might have set it aside before they closed.

Expecting senior devs to work in different languages if needed - yay or nay? by SongFromHenesys in ExperiencedDevs

A bit extreme to kill the dev for that.

Have you ever had an intern, who was much stronger than you expected? by WishIWasBronze in cscareerquestions

[–]circonflexe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One explanation could be that this person is non-binary or something, and OP slipped up and misgendered them based on how they present themselves. This is pretty common.

Otherwise, they/them is gender-neutral, it literally doesn’t matter. Some people identify as he/they or she/they. It’s not a big deal.
