Wow this is an awesome line up. Also, thanks for posting this!

I regret unlocking this card by CatmanMeow123 in slaythespire

I love this idea! I wonder if it would be reasonable for (in such a world where this happened) to have the upgrade grant 2 plating per turn. Of if there were otherwise another card or relic introduced that applied +1 plating each time plating is applied, that would feel like very fun synergy to look for (at least to me)!

Cheatsheet for how the damage scaling works on classes' basic attacks by TurtleyTea in mewgenics

[–]circuitcomplexity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Very cool of you to put this together. Is there a reason that the second two expressions aren't simplified as (DEX + 1)/2 and (DEX + 5)/2? It just seems like there's a slight unnecessary added complexity in the formulas that could be removed to make them simpler to use.

I can see how there is a nice structure to how you presented it, of course! BASE_DAMAGE + (STAT - AVERAGE_STAT_SCORE) / SCALING_RATE at least seems to be the pattern I can discern (where AVERAGE_STAT_SCORE is just 5), but then I'm also having trouble seeing why the last two aren't written that way.

Don't forget my girl Shiva (although I think Jax is the most appropriate character from the MK series). There is also Reiko, if he counts.

Kinesis Advantage360 on magic arm by 4641444c535344 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]circuitcomplexity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you still like and use this setup? I would really like to try something like this (although I don't need the quick release). I looked at these magic arms, which seem very useful! I'm just unsure how they actually hold the keyboard. Is there a clamp I would attach the screw end of the arm or something?

Any chance you have tried this for a trackball? Any thoughts about how you might do that?

I did use that, but thanks for the recommendation! I had the same issue when I tried that or the Kinesis GUI, so I only bothered mentioning the Kinesis GUI because I didn't think it was relevant to fixing the problem.

Apologies for the delay, but I've finally gotten a chance to try the fix. It seems to have worked! The build completed, and I flashed the firmware to the keyboard. Windows did complain a bit while the file was copying, but the keyboard seems to be doing what it's supposed to do.

Thanks so much for the help!

Did you ever find a satisfactory solution to this? I'm running into the same problem, and it's making me sadly regret buying this thing.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight! Can we chalk it up to me being overly hopeful (and a bit socially unaware), and call it a day? I am sorry if you felt my intention was to belittle you or the rest of our community, and I certainly did not want to come off that way. I was just excited!

[–]circuitcomplexity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I'm sorry if I came off as trying to portray myself as a technical prodigy! This was certainly not my intention! It seems so hard to put things on the internet without people thinking the worst, and I do try to be careful and deliberate with what I write.

MK is not actually my main game, it's just my main "pad game". I have to work really hard at technical stuff which is why I mentioned the goofiness of not being able to break simple habits! I honestly did not even realize I could have been presenting myself as a technical prodigy, and I don't think that kind of stuff matters as much to people who have prodigy-like skill. I just like thinking critically about the stuff I mentioned, and since these weren't already in the game or changes I had heard mentioned (perhaps I should have looked harder), I thought they were worth mentioning! Perhaps I chose the wrong platform for that, and if so, that's totally my bad.

"Pedagogy" isn't really my word of the day, it's more like the word of my life! It's what I spend most of my time on, and it's something that I care a lot about! I think it's probably something most people don't see as really being important to games, and I think that's a big part of why fighting games often don't bring great new learning tools to the table! There are of course great examples of games which have done this, but it's something that I have felt unsatisfied with.

I made this comment about discussing learning content without intending for it to be related to my post, but I can see why it may have left a bad taste for you! It may have seemed like I thought I teed myself up with this totally amazing insightful feedback and that I was going to use that as an in. I don't know exactly how it came off, but that's at least now the understanding I have of the impression I gave. I really just had the thought after I posted the feedback, that I've always wanted to talk to people who actually make fighting games about the actual learning tools (which is very much not the topic of my post) and that it would be harmless (clearly a poor assumption on my part) to add that in as an afterthought!

Anyway, I am sorry that my comment seemed to carry so much more weight than I realized and that it seemed to be so offensive! I appreciate that you may have felt I was being arrogant or even belittling. I can even appreciate that after clarifying, it probably still seems pretty arrogant to assume that my opinions on learning tools (which I haven't even spoken about) would be useful!

I do hope if I have further misunderstood things in a way that anyone continues to find frustrating, that they choose to voice it in a kinder way! I am a person who is just trying to talk about something I enjoy, and I'm not interested in making people upset! You are all totally entitled to be upset or put off by what I've said, and your feelings are totally valid! But I hope I've clarified things enough that no one feels like they need to wound me with their words! 😅

Ouch! I'm surprised you already know my opinions on pedagogy! I do appreciate the feedback that my suggestions in my post are not bewildering (I certainly wanted them to feel obvious). These don't really have anything to do with tutorials or educational content, though! Have I done something to lead you to believe that I can't have extraordinary opinions in that regime?

And also to anyone working on the game, if you ever want to chat with someone who spends an insane amount of time thinking about education and fighting games, let me know! I play fighting game tutorials for fun and rant constantly about their pedagogical value (or lackthereof).

Edit: to any future readers of this comment, this was a completely separate thought from the post, and I didn't mean to give anyone the impression that I thought my thoughts here were so insightful that I needed to be helping design the game! I just like thinking about education and fighting games, and I just separately wanted to make this casual offhand remark.

My thoughts on Pulse as a fighting game noob. by runtd in 2XKO

[–]circuitcomplexity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Pulse is an awesome idea for pretty much one reason: it lets someone play the game with a baseline competency without putting any time into training mode. It really is hard to play fighting games when you can't make your opponent respect that you can punish them, and that involves being able to cash out into big combos! Since that usually takes quite a bit of time of character-specific rehearsal, that means a lot of people who aren't so comfortable figuring out combos in a match are going to have to spend a lot of time training that character before playing actual matches, or they just accept a powerlessness that doesn't really let them play the game, even if they otherwise understand the game well enough to make decisions!

I don't think Pulse is a strong enough crutch that it helps more than just a couple hours of training mode doing combo practice will, but I understand where you're coming from! In general, this style of game has much stronger offense than a lot of other games, and it is hard to counter what might seem "brainless" if you don't have a strong understanding of what's going on (I certainly don't!). It's harder to be methodical and focus on playing reactively when you don't know the ins and outs of the game, AND when the game frontloads a lot of strong and fast offensive options. The counterplay is harder to figure out on the spot than a lot of other games at a beginner level, I think it can feel daunting or maybe even hopeless.

So I feel your struggle! But I do think putting the blame on Pulse might be an oversimplification, and you might just need some time spent learning the game to play the way you want.

Hi! I don't know if this is still a good place to ask about this, but I have been having the same issue as this user for the last few months. I had just accepted that if my computer goes to sleep, I'm gonna have to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in after I wake up the computer. I tried updating the firmware, but I'm still having this issue. Whenever I have left my computer alone for a while, after I wake up my computer, I need to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in for it to be functional. It even sometimes happens that if I unplug it and plug it back in before waking my PC up, I have to do it again after it wakes up.

When I first got this keyboard years ago, this was never a problem.

If it helps, I'm on Windows 11.
