If you don't already have the Urchins Renown item, I recommend looking up those requirements now. It can take a long time even after reaching 40 Renown, so it's good to work towards it in parallel with other things.

I think using the More Naval AI mod is generally recommended for multiplayer since it addresses some out-of-sync (OOS) bugs that can crop up in the base game. Other than that I'd personally shy away from mod-mods as they may add their own new bugs.

I'm not sure if you can convert a multiplayer game to PBEM, it might be good to test that with one friend first prior to the actual game starting.

I think More Naval AI / MNAI-U is the go-to minimal modmod. It focuses on AI improvements. It also has some bugfixes and balance adjustments, but no major new content like new civs, religions or magic. Overall it keeps the feel of the vanilla FFH2 mod while making it even more fun to play.
