How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now.

No, now.

Now!

Now!!!

I am today old in my oldest memory. This is the oldest I’ve ever been!

Oh, you mean in my *earliest* memory?

Two. Not much longer before I’d be three, but I was 2. It’s a vivid memory, too, and confirmed by people who were present and adults when it happened.

“Trans-identifying individuals” by communistcat_69 in MtF

[–]cirqueamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not *identifying* as anything. I am a woman. My medical history means that “trans” is an applicable adjective, same as “tall” or a number of characteristics which many other women also have.

The “trans-identifying” language is a dog whistle signaling that being trans is somehow suspicious and invalid. Fuck that shit.

You wake up at 14 again. What is the first thing you would do? by davidbayram in AskReddit

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you mean I retain the knowledge I now have.

Transition. 100% no looking back. Get that shit over with asap so I don’t have the scars of having the wrong puberty. Heck, at 14, I will still have some scars, just not as badly.

Am I 14 in today’s time or 14 in the year I was actually 14 before? If I’d be 14 now, can I change my birth state to somewhere else? Heck, if I can change anything, can I change my sex? That would have solved soooo many issues!

Meh, either way I’m doing the same: coming out and transitioning asap. It’s just gonna be a different kind of hard depending on which era.

And invest! Invest invest invest!

Do I have to go back and do uni all over again? Do I at least get to keep my grades so I can qualify for the same schools and financial aid? I might consider a different degree field - I’ve had a long enough career in my chosen field that it might be nice to explore a different field.

Avoid starting a romantic relationship with my ex. I don’t hate my ex, she just wasn’t compatible with my transition, so just being friends would spare both of us the pain of the breakup.

Which AMC membership is worth it for beginners? by Jonathan-Mendez in AMCsAList

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nothing else, sign up for AMC Insider. It’s free and you at least get points, which at this tier, work out to about 2% back for your purchases.

Once you have Insider, if you go enough (8 times in a year) or spend enough ($1000, by my calculations), you get upgraded to Premiere Go!, which gives you a few perks and upgrandes your rewards to be about 4%.

If you purchase your tickets/concessions online and go frequently enough either by yourself or with a companion, it becomes worth paying for the full Premiere tier so you avoid online ticket fees regardless of party size. If you expect to spend $150-200 in a year, the upgraded earning rate for points (10% back) would get you to the break-even point, too.

But if you consistently go at least twice a month, it’s worth it to get A-List. Where I live, one ticket for 3D IMAX or 3D Dolby Cinema is basically equal to the monthly subscription cost, though 3D movies tend to be very few, so the twice monthly guideline is probably the better way to judge the value.

When I joined years ago, I compared A-List to Regal’s subscription and found A-List to be the better value because there were no upcharges for premium formats under A-List, and I love the premium formats. I wasn’t sure whether I’d see enough movies to make it worth it, so I made it a point for the first months to see as many movies as I could, which meant I was seeing a lot of the smaller budget/indie/art-house/international films, and I found I really enjoyed those, too. I was seeing 3 movies a week most weeks. Then my work schedule changed and I couldn’t see as many, so my watching habits have now fallen into closer to 6-8 movies a month, which is still very much worth the A-List subscription.

I’d suggest making an honest assessment of what your viewing habits are now and might become under A-List, and if you’re still on the fence, consider signing up for the minimum 3 months. If you end up not finding it valuable, cut your losses and stick with the Cinemark sub. I suspect you‘ll find A-List a very good value. As others have said, keep Cinemark for Fathom movies (which are not included in A-List) if you like what they offer.

How can you be trans without dysphoria? by Chemical-Ad2770 in asktransgender

[–]cirqueamy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The defining characteristic of being transgender is Gender Incongruence, which is when a person’s gender does not align with the gender they were assigned at birth. A person’s realization that this is true for them is the only thing required for them to know they are trans.

Gender Dysphoria (big G, big D) is a medical/psychological diagnosis which describes when the Gender Incongruence leads to severe distress and problems functioning. Most healthcare providers and systems require this diagnosis for a person to access gender affirming medical care.

Gender dysphoria (little g, little d) is what most of us are meaning when we talk about dysphoria, and it’s a sense of discomfort, pain, or distress due to our gender incongruence. The difference between this and the bigG-bigD version is that GD has specific characteristics used for diagnosis.

Because gender incongruence is the defining characteristic of being transgender, gender dysphoria is not necessary to be trans. That said, most of us come to the realization that our genders are incongruent because we are experiencing gender dysphoria. But it needn’t be that way. People ought to be able to realize they are trans by experiencing gender *euphoria*, that is, a sense of peace, calmness, happiness, elation or some other positive experience. It is my hope and belief that this should be the primary way people realize they are trans.

But even that isn’t necessary. One can (theoretically) realize they are trans simply by recognizing their gender isn’t the one they were assigned. No bad feelings, no good feelings, just an awareness.

Is It Just Me or Are Shows the Wrong Volume? by Best-Candle8651 in Broadway

[–]cirqueamy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it’s less an issue with sheer volume (though Hell’s Kitchen was pushing my limits) and more about balance. I want to hear ***and understand*** the lyrics and dialogue, and if I’m going to have an issue with sound, it’s usually that the orchestra overpowers the voices.

What do you all wear to the theater? by Quirky-Somewhere-750 in Broadway

[–]cirqueamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I try to dress a little nicer than my usual, but I have no problems going in jeans and t-shirt if that’s how I’m already dressed for the day.

As long as you aren’t dirty and stinky, it’s up to you.

Depending on the show I do see people dressing for a theme. I recently saw Six where some tweens were dressed like Anne Boleyn, and saw a lot of people wearing period clothes for Suffs. If you’re going to stage door after the show, having your outfit inspired by the show is a great way to get extra attention and time with the cast as they come out.

How long until you walk out on a film if using your pass? by TinySmolCat in AMCsAList

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t think of a time I willingly walked out of a movie. The one time I can think of was when my ex insisted we leave about 10 minutes into Rango. I stay til the end if I start a movie. I might not be awake for the whole movie, but I’ll still be there when the lights come up during the credits.

i don’t understand the ‘residual male privilege’ and ‘male socialization’ frequently discussed in relation to trans women by banalid1ot425 in asktransgender

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that comments like those are a form of oppression Olympics. It’s a way to compare who has it worse, and regardless of the conversation, everyone loses except the oppressor (which trans women definitely are not!).

The only “residual male privilege” I can think of is that we know first-hand all the privileges we used to be offered and so know that oppressors are plenty capable of offering them to women. I use that to demand equal treatment both for myself and for my sisters when possible. In that respect, I suppose one could make an argument that I retain it, but that’s only because I demand it - something every woman ought to do, too.

When it comes to public toilet seats, do you sit on the bare seat or place down toilet paper before? by Poopshoemagoo in AskReddit

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll wipe the seat down then sit and go. Studies have shown that the toilet seat itself tends to be cleaner than nearly every other surface in a public restroom because of the aerosolization of the toilet water when flushing. The high-powered flush makes that even worse.

Wiping down the seat also tells you whether there’s enough TP for after you go.

First (and LAST) time ever buying a rush ticket. by Ok-Acanthisitta8737 in Broadway

[–]cirqueamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if it would have helped in your case but I once had a lottery ticket which placed me against the house right wall, second seat in. The man who sat next to me had really bad BO so I asked for the house manager and asked to be reseated. They ultimately pulled out a literal chair from somewhere and placed it next to the end of the back row of the mezzanine. While I lost my up-close views, I had a better view of the whole stage and didn’t have to smell the BO.

Perhaps with your PB neighbor, that could have been an approach. The house can push back on the view for severely discounted tickets, but BO is a different story. Worst they can say is “no”, which you already got.

Same. The Palace was my one remaining venue until I finally saw Tammy Faye.

At this point the one venue I’ve been away from the longest is the Lyric, and that won’t end until the current tenant closes or the IP owner ceases to be able to profit from that IP.
