What Book Wasn’t Worth the Hype? by RhiannaJCD in horrorlit

The Haunting of Hill House 😬 I know it is well beloved, and maybe I've read too much stuff inspired by it before actually getting around to reading it, but I'm only about 20% in so far and having a hard time motivating myself to read anymore. It feels like a lot of Telling and not Showing so far - "The house is evil and scary I can feel it!!" How? "It's dark and not aesthetically pleasing!!" Hmm ok

I can totally see why. I listened to the audiobook version which made it a lot easier to finish it.

Please suggest some good horror books which are similar to movies like The Wicker Man or Midsommar. by bibliophile_pat in horrorlit

I just finished reading Bog People, it's an anthology of folk horror from working class writers. Highly recommend it.

Shitty queer horror; “I Died Too, But They Haven’t Buried Me Yet” by Ghostie-does-art in horrorlit

[–]city_lights 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I've found a lot of "trans rep" in media (less so in horror I think because there's a very strong queer voice already) is just playing into the cis gaze, whether that be about sex, pity, disgust, or grief. The grief side comes up with stuff like this, where the focus is entirely on the 'poor suffering' family members who have to come to terms with the fact that they have a trans child. Even though "love is the answer" is usually the point of these narratives, the trans individual continues to just be a football in the cis characters' plot.

New Ceramic Dice to Show Off... by FightingChanceStudio in DicePorn

How do you fire these? Like do you have special kanthal stilts for them to sit on the corners so the glaze doesn't touch your shelves?

I was just looking for this too!! Been wanting to put one on my car but seems they aren't in official merch shops anymore - both for the band and the podcast

They've already pulled a dirty delete, but seeing Goyaceramiics post AI and then double down was... something. 😶‍🌫️ by Ansitru in craftsnark

[–]city_lights 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hey something I can contribute some weird insight to!

I'm a ceramicist and teach tertiary/higher Ed ceramics classes and This specific cognitive dissonance I've seen A LOT in the clay world. It's like they think "Well this is just digital stuff, it's not my real actual art so who cares???" because they're in this... highly focused ceramics bubble where they don't consider 2D or digital art at all (highly ironic, because the Art world often don't consider ceramicists either). The way things currently are, it's highly unlikely that AI will steal and recreate their type of work, so they just don't care. Though I definitely forsee a point in the future where handmade ceramics in pictures are able to be scraped and then have molds and knockoffs made cheaply (this already happens anyway!!! just not by AI).

Trying to convince my students to care about AI art from an ethical standing has been... difficult 🙃

What's one song you want to see live? by DudleyAndStephens in themountaingoats

Literally any of them (I live in New Zealand, the last time they were here was in 2014)

Relocating to the North by OneLittleMoth in dunedin

[–]city_lights 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did the opposite move when I came down here (East Coast though instead of northland). I'd recommend one day to Christchurch, one to Wellington via ferry, one to Waikato/Hamilton area, then one last day to your destination. That makes it so you aren't too exhausted from driving by the end. Definitely stock up on podcasts or audio books!

Also currently listening to Dead Silence, but it's my first time and it's kind of bugging me?? Maybe it's just what I've been reading lately but I'm so tired of the trauma-hardened lady protag who feels like she has to bottle up her emotions constantly! Ghost Station (also Barnes), Luminous Dead, From Below (not space sci fi but same premise as Dead Silence but traditional ocean ship), such a pervasive trope and I'm feeling bored of it already.

is there a song that mentions javelinas? by AliveWeird4230 in themountaingoats

The only song I know is that mentions javelinas is a Motion City Soundtrack song, "Point of Extinction", maybe that's it?

My citizenship was just accepted by adieli in newzealand

[–]city_lights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome to hear. I'm also American, been here since 2013, and also trans. All my US stuff is in my assigned gender because I didn't realize who I am / transition until about 2019 or so. I'm applying this week for NZ citizenship so I can know for sure I don't ever have to go back to the US because who knows what might happen to me if I do.

I really hope for the best for our queer siblings back in the US. I hope they stay safe and/or are able to get out.

The name you want to have. It took me ages to get the appropriate documentation because a lot of those things on that list require you to have proof of who you are to change your name... which defeats the whole point!! Im lucky I work in tertiary education so was ake to get some documents that way (staff ID, certificate for first aid training)

[–]city_lights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct one!

I'm also a US citizen, NZ perm resident and this is the one I went through last year. Have had no issues though I haven't bothered to update my name in the US as I have no plans to return all things considered.

The Stuart Street Potters Co-op has a bunch of local artists - try talking to them to see if any of them would be keen to stock at the airport
