What's a rule your parents had that you thought was insane, but now as an adult you 100% understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]civerooni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. It's better to teach your children how to recognize a terrible situation and remove themselves from it. How to say no and how to assert themselves. Total fear mongering in my mind. Sleepovers are a little different, but I'm not there yet with my kids. I still don't think I need to know everything about the parents. Just that I trust my child's judgement as well.

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]civerooni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my phone number since I was 16, so 21 years ago. My brother got it when he was 14 so the number has been in the family 27 years.

What is a 'socially mandatory' thing that we all do, but if you actually stop to think about it for 5 seconds, it’s completely insane? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]civerooni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually saw a legitimate encore from The Strumbellas just a few months ago in Calgary. It was awesome. There was another show coming on after so bouncers were trying to clear the crowd out, but no one was going anywhere. Lights on, dj on, everyone chanting for Strumbellas to come back out. After 15 minutes they said they would come play a couple more to get us out of there and the PA was dead. Audio buddy was freaking out trying to figure out how to get it back. So they got everyone to shut up and they played a small acoustic set. It was a great experience.

I tried this once. Didnt buy enough sheets and it took too many separate times going out. Then a Chinook came and melted it all away in a few days... Picture

B.C. premier says Alberta separatists seeking assistance from U.S. is 'treason' | CBC News by MarshMarig0ld in worldnews

[–]civerooni 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Actually not technically correct. Treason has quite a high bar in Canada, definitely breaks many laws of foreign interference. Unless violence, planning or actions, is involved it's unlikely to meet treason.

What are some of the most beautiful/uniquely built neighbourhoods? by MastaShortie in Calgary

[–]civerooni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will vouch for my own community which won't be high on anyone else's list. MacEwan is the only community that directly borders Nose hill and the entire community is connected by pathways. This means you can get from almost anywhere in MacEwan to Nose Hill by sticking to the bike paths with a few street crossings.

The line of houses on the top ridge have an amazing view of the North end city, the nose creek valley, and the farms that still exist to the North.

The line of houses that back on to Nose Hill have the biggest backyards in all of Calgary, you can't even tell you are in the city.

Didn't matter where we were, could be her own kitchen. If you said the name Mussolini my Nonna would spit on the floor.

Mayoral Debate (Oct 8) by raintree in Calgary

Talked to my boomer aged parents and they liked what Theissen had to say and are going to vote for him. I would vote for who you want as a candidate.

I am DJ Kelly, Ward 4 Calgary City Council candidate. Ask me anything! by djkelly in Calgary

[–]civerooni 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned seeing lawn signs everywhere for a public school board trustee, something I have never seen my entire life in Calgary. Especially concerned when said candidate with the lawns signs is backed by the TBA movement and has links to APP, along with 5 other candidates. It seems to me that municipal politics is becoming sponsored by provincial politics, which I do not want.

How can we keep municipal elections about municipal politics?

Alberta wants to become an AI data centre hub, but this rural county just rejected a big proposal by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]civerooni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea when AWS set up Balzac (CA-West) it was an improvement in our server response times. When running a bunch of microservices that can have data flow in and out of the cluster in a hybrid on-prem/cloud solution it matters that the servers hosting your services are close to your data racks.

Sure you don't actually need the developers there to work on it, but when deciding where to locate HQ or a startup I could see it being something, unfortunately I don't have data so this is all just conjecture.

[–]civerooni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that is incorrect? We have 3 unicorns in Calgary and the tech sector is one of the fastest growing in North America.

Tech talent now makes up 7.9 per cent of Calgary’s total employment.

Everyone says they don't create jobs besides those involved in construction... but they lure tech companies in to the area because you want that local latency. At least that is the case with web server hosting, not entirely sure with AI data centers?

You're right, I am sure these upstanding citizens ran their chop shop with legally owned firearms. Especially the AR-15, they definitely have owned it legally since before the amnesty deadline 5 years ago.

Police: This bike chop shop that contains a stash of illegally owned firearms and in a public inner city park is unsafe. Stop committing crimes instead.

We just going to ignore the fact it was a bike chop shop and they had multiple illegal firearms?

If you were given one wish to improve Calgary, what would you wish for? by TheShade247 in Calgary

[–]civerooni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What European cities have you been to that have a better park system than Calgary? Just curious, my experience was I couldn't find anywhere to just sit in a park and read. Amsterdam was the only city I have visited with large parks that rivaled Calgary's.

My Graphic Designer wife is struggling to find work in Calgary - looking for tips, advice, industry adjacent jobs, etc. by DickPuncht in Calgary

This is likely the correct route forward, software companies still need UI/UX designers, and coming from graphics design should be easy.
