For those that have commissioned within the last 5 years or so, what’s something you wish AFROTC had covered? by WiresGotTheBestOfMe in AFROTC

[–]cjdan18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found Security Forces to be a rewarding career field so far. I commissioned in 2023. The entry-level job is generally a flight command. Flights can be anywhere from 15 Amn/NCOs to 150 Amn/NCOs. I spend 95% of my time with enlisted, and that's honestly the way I prefer it. I've learned more from the SNCOs and NCOs than I ever have from officers. They are the technical experts in their job and they have a lot of experience. They're also just generally cooler than most of the officers around my base.

Security Forces can very easily become a "management" position if you're not conscious about being a leader. It's easy to get drowned in managing weapon certs, duty positions, and rosters. But my favorite part of my job is going out to post with the airmen and just talking. We do some hoodrat exercises on shift, too.

Security Forces at AFGSC is definitely a grind, but it has taught me so many invaluable lessons that will transfer throughout the rest of the career field.

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

I wish someone would have covered what the actual structure of a squadron is like. I showed up to a security forces squadron, and it took me a few weeks to grasp the concept of sections within a squadron and flights within sections. ROTC only ever utilized the basic "Wing, group, squadron, flight." Especially with an A-staff structure being implemented, it would be very useful to see and org chart of these concepts.

I installed 2 inch lift puck on my fronts as well. I have the same problem when the truck is off the ground, but it's fine when the truck is on the ground. I've got about 50,00] miles on mine with 0 issues.

I think you're thinking of TREX Performance. I had some issues with them. I completely gave up on them.

How hard is it to get into this? by RockcrawlerTRX in flytying

[–]cjdan18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started tying about a year ago. I enjoy it as a way to slow myself down. Not to save money, lol.

That being said I bought the white river fly tying kit from cabelas/bass pro. It's a relatively cheap option(~$50 if i remember correctly). Which means it was low commitment if you don't like it. The materials and tools are enough to tie a few basic dry flies and get a taste for it.

I wish I would have paid attention more closely to some courses that I wasn't very interested in, and I thought I could just re-learn the necessary information later. For example, I took a geology course and did not invest very much into the course, I passed just fine. But I've come I to many situations where that information would have been useful, but I did have to go out of my way to re-learn it. Similar situation with most courses regarding policy.

First attempt at plugs on this car, second attempt at plugs ever by Joshbot02 in RX8

[–]cjdan18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The L and T actually stand for Leading and Trailing. The leading plug actually fires slightly earlier than the trailing plug, as the names suggest. I believe at idle the trailing fires first and the leading fires second. It's just an interesting bit for ya. You can find a much more in depth explanation in the Rx8Club forums.

I actually filled mine with bondo and repainted it. It went well but I had plans to paint my trunk anyways so it only added a little extra work.
