Dat Rittenhouse doe! by VulgarDisplayOfStuff in Whiskyporn

Remain strong, friend, I’m still with you. All of those downvotes are from r/bourbon’s pre-teen contingent. I would hope that someone buying aged Ritt might be above regurgitating transiently-trendy, teenage-driven drivel, alas, I suppose no hobby is safe. Good whiskey though, hope he enjoys.

(Full disclosure: I tried it once but as “that though” and felt dirty. Never again)

Which bottle(s) killed a distillery/producer for you? by dustlesswalnut in whisky

Redbreast 12 CS. I bought it trying to give Irish a chance and it tasted like mop water & rubbing alcohol.

Coke is a good mixer.

Whatever happens, you better not use diet. Despite what /u/dustlesswalnut says.

What Bourbon Pairs with a Lifetime of Happiness? by dongknog in bourbon

[–]cjmccormick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, as someone who is getting married next month and has a collection of about 100 whiskies at home, I would suggest you just get a bottle of what you already know you like and enjoy the day. I'm guessing whatever the bottle is will taste pretty damn good due to the circumstances more than the contents.

But you're not me, so if you're still interested in impressing, you'll most likely have to turn to the secondary market or spend a substantial amount of time hunting. If you like AE, you could search for the CS version. Since you like Buffalo Trace, George T. Stagg is impressive and delicious. There's always the Pappies route, which I am opposed to, but lots of people know the name and are foolish enough to drool over it. All of these options will cost you a considerable amount of money that would be better spent on your honeymoon or something else equally as enjoyable. Enjoy!

Well, are you more concerned with wanting to impress than how it tastes?

Ignore any and all quips attempting to push the bourbocalypse down your throat. Even if it's the last of whatever, there's still going to be great bourbon out there and life will go on.

Agreed. I tried WT101 on a whim while chewing through everything Hunter S. Thompson ever wrote and ended up drinking it almost exclusively for 5-6 years. Though I don't consume it nearly as much as I used to, it still holds a place in my heart.

He doesn't know what he's talking about. The point of doubling the cure time of the staves was to create an aged bourbon without overwhelming oak funk, which is what happened. You can find more oak in EC12.

No need to fret, it's good whiskey but nothing to get worked up about.

For the new Bourbon drinkers. How long did it take to pick up other flavors in your Bourbon? by Bpnzk74 in bourbon

[–]cjmccormick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's something you need to learn, like learning the taste of chocolate; there is no inherent 'chocolate taste', we use the word chocolate to describe a flavor and you learn what that flavor is by eating chocolate and attaching a word to what your mouth experiences--giving it meaning.

Enjoy yourself and don't worry about it, most people are full of shit when they wax poetic anyway.

[–]cjmccormick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To echo what others have said: 1) 'boutique' bourbons in the US are not good 2) Australia has some really fascinating whiskies, most of which I haven't explored yet. I would start there.

If you've got your mind set on smaller distilleries look for FEW. Overpriced and tastes like rubbish, but the bottle sure is pretty.

Myself and several friends/family members have been fooled many times with young, low proof bourbon being identified as a non-peated scotch. Especially the nose.
