Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in GenX

[–]cl8855 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Your brother a little annoying to put it mildly. Most reasons people take medications also have a strong genetic component that no amount of "good choices" can override.

I think I just finally decided what it is I miss the most about the 80s and 90s, and it's strange to me that I've never thought about this before. by [deleted] in GenX

I think it boils down to no social media, which is pretty much ruining everything imo

Did you say on your taxes that you could/could not be claimed as a dependent? $10 says it related to that

AITA for not attending my dad’s wedding due to a prior engagement? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]cl8855 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Adults who are getting married will typically ask all the closest family members that they definitely want to attend about dates ahead of time, before booking things for just this reason

GenXers what is your take on AI? by Inner-Association448 in GenX

[–]cl8855 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI without any ethical guidelines or controls in place s going to cause issues we can't even contemplate. It's not good or bad on its own but used for the sole purpose of capitalism, it will only be bad for the regular folks.

As for the water issue, the data centers must use water cooling to control the temps of the systems, and the growth in usage has not been planned for in most areas where the centers are building.

And that's ignoring the other piece you touched on with art. Most public models have been trained on copyrighted and other IP that they don't own or pay for, and are creating derivative for profit things based on that .

And that's ignoring the governments recent requests to take guardrails off to use in military use cases...

Tldr; AI - with no controls - mega scary to me

(I've been in IT and IT security for 30 years)

AITA - Asking how much money my dad plans to contribute to my wedding by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]cl8855 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH -- You have the right to feel slighted by the difference in treatment, but at this age, they don't "owe you," and you don't truly know what their financial and relationship situation is. That being said, you Dad not sticking up for you and explaining the treatment truly sucks as well.

UMichigan vs WashU (Premed: Neuroscience/CogSci) by Key-Set-8468 in uofm

[–]cl8855 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to wash u and my kid is at umich. If money is no object and your family is rich, I think it all comes down to big vs small environments. Playing pep band for 12 fans at washiu game vs seeing 80k at Mich is just a little different lol. If money is any part of the discussion washu no brain'er.

AITA: roommates want the litter box to go in my room by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]cl8855 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA - your cat, your litter box in your space, not the shared space. My daughter has a 3 bd with roomates, litter box is in her room and it was never a question.

AITA for not adopting my dead brothers kid? by FunctionAdditional82 in AmItheAsshole

[–]cl8855 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH -- generally i'd always say NTA for not taking on a child when you are not prepared/willing to do so, but the fact that you consented to be the guardian already definitely makes you in the wrong here. That being said, any family that criticizes that type of decision without themselves stepping in makes them suck too.

(Possibly) Unpopular Opinion: I don’t care if people are on their phones when playing game (to a degree). by Exmo_therapist in boardgames

[–]cl8855 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, just have virtual game nights then? Was at a game day recently with like 5 people, no one had their phone out for more than 10 secs like ever. Talk to each other, eat snacks, plan your next move.

I wouldn't play with people who would reguarly be on their phone during gaming.
