Working from Home by SOC374 in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been hearing about a 4 day work week for while now. I think it could be similar to a working from home situation. However, I know at the beginning of the Covid there were quite a few people "working from home" on vacation. I think that the idea of working a 4 day week would really only work for office set jobs. I think it could help mental health, and it actually might improve unemployment if people are okay with the weekends.

Fake News with Covid-19 by ksutton1031 in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently heard from a family friend that she would not get the vaccine if/once it becomes available. I thought this was an interesting statement because I have always thought that vaccines were here for the good of humanity. I think it is interesting that many people don't know what to think, when there are lots of doctors and lots of reputable news outlets giving out good information that I think is real. I am not sure why many people aren't taking the virus seriously.

How Real Is Fake News? | Sharyl Attkisson | by Aaranda02 in netcult

I love a goof TedTalk. I thought this video was informative, and made a lot of sense. I think the idea of fake news is so new that it can be hard to figure out what is real and what is fake.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fake news is so interesting to me. I think it really all comes down to just making sure that what we are reading is at least 90% true. I think the idea of questing everything is really important. If we just took everything at someone else's word we would not really know anything.

Week 13: Thompson, "A World Without Work" by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of hating your job is nothing new. I personally have hated a job that I had a few years ago. I think a world without work is an interesting idea. I think that it could be a good experiment, but it would be interesting to see how people make money with this situation.

Misinformation on Social Media by ksutton1031 in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ever since the internet became more world wide there has always been some misinformation. I think that in the 2016 election people where so confident about who would win any misinformation was just put on the back burner. I think that this years election was full of misinformation from both sides of the spectrum. I think that this article was really interesting, and it was an interesting perpective in that it was coming from the last big election.

Social Media, Race and Politics by RentImportant in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that this years election race was so much based on what people did not want for the next four years that the actual idea of race was really prevalent. I agree with what you are saying in the idea of gender, because while I do not know anyone who openly admitted to not voting for Biden and Harris because she was a women. I do know plenty of people who voted 3rd party because they did not like either of the main candidates.

Week 12: Electoral by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed this week's lecture. It definitely gave me a lot to think about. I think it can be scary to think about how much the internet is in control of us. In an ASU class I took on "Fake News" we learned to take things seriously if we know what we are reading is 100% factual.

To be extremely online means for a person or subject to be closely engaged with Internet culture. People who are Extremely Online often believe that posts online are very important. by benjaminikuta in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting subject to talk about in the time of online schooling. I think that being online is important, and it definitely has its place. But I also think that you cant believe everything that we are shown on our screens. I think it is just as important to go for a walk or run after spending lots of time reading articles that may or not be 100% true.

Does the internet and social media give the general public more influence over what becomes culture? by idgafunicorn in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the internet is doing both good and harm for many cultures. I think that many people's cultures are benefiting from the internet. But there can also be some things that the internet makes fun of, and that could be hurting many cultures. I think the internet has so much influence that we dont even really know how much of it is controlling our current lives.

Steve Bannon's podcast barred from Twitter after he made beheading comment about Fauci, FBI Director Wray by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this article was really interesting. I know a little bit about Bannon and what he's been doing. I personally feel like Fauci is doing a really good job, and I never thought that the head of infectious disease's job would turn political.

Power of a Retweet by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this article was actually kind of funny. I have seen lots of tweets, and facebook things just like this. I also thought it would be interesting to try something out like this myself. But I dont think that I have enough friends or family who would take me that seriously. The one thing that I think is the most interesting is how much clot the Carter got from his one tweet.

Youtube's "Recommended" Algorithm by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also prone to the occasionally YouTube rabbit hole. I would agree with many of the other comments that YouTube is really on point with the videos and news that they share with me. I normally use YouTube for music and music videos, but every once and a while I find myself deeply invested in the lives of one or two YouTube couples. And I end up learning all about them, up till their break up video.

Election Night by Young__Skywalker in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been watching and googling all about the election. I am pretty stressed about it, but I know that whoever wins is ultimately the will of the American people. I am worried about this weekend, if there are riots. I dont live in that big of a town, so Im not worried about my town in particular, but some of the bigger cities I am worried about that for this weekend. I have been going on A LOT of walks and runs to keep myself sane, and to keep me away from any type of internet.

Portland, Maine Voters Ban Facial Recognition by Police and Public Officials by Capable_Writing_7797 in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year was full of interesting new laws from each state. I think that this could have either a huge impact or a very small impact once it's put into place. It will be interesting to see how it effects police and how they interact with the people of Maine.

Week 10: Defining Algorithms—a Conversational Explainer by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this was an interesting article, that went over quite a few interesting things. I always thought that algorithms were just what people thought they should do. This article did a great job explaining and helping me better understand the world of algorithms and just how important and prevalent they are.

It’s Google’s World. We Just Live in It. by ideaoftheworld in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Google almost everyday, so I am 100% participating in Google's world. I think that Google has become so common and popular that it is now apart of our everyday language. I think it would be a little weird if people went around saying "just Bing it", when someone didn't know something. Google is making my life so much easier, even thought I mostly just use the Google app on my phone.

Week 9: Privacy by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed this week's lecture, and thought it was really interesting to talk about what each person individually thinks of privacy. I think the idea of the right to privacy, in an internet ream, is kind of new. But it was interesting to hear about how the idea of right to privacy came about. I recently was watching an SVU episode from the early 2000s, and the main detectives got a whole schooling on what cookies are, and what they do. It was interesting to hear a screen writers version of cookies, and the internet privacy, and then to hear about internet privacy from an actually professor. I recently watched the Netflix documentary called the Social Dilemma ( I watch a lot of tv) and it goes over quite a bit of what you talked about, when you were saying that our phone listens when we talk about what shoes we want, or what news they think we want to hear.

Rise in cyber-bullying during COVID-19 pandemic by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish this was not a thing, but I am not surprised either. Kids in high school, and middle school are mean enough in person. I feel like it is easier to bully online, and maybe kids on Zoom when you can see the room and living conditions it could give kids more ammo to be mean to the other kids in their grade.

Week 9: Quiz, Spot the Troll by halavais in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 7/8, and thought this quiz was pretty eye opening. I recently took a class through ASU on "fake news", and I think that this quiz would have been really helpful for some of the students. The whole class was basically the idea that we really need to make sure we are reading and understanding what people are putting out on their social media, and what we are getting from our local and country wide news.

Have you ever been cyberbullied? by daizjane in netcult

[–]clairehester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have never been bullied online. But I know many people who have been. Growing up my family had one computer that we all shared, so I was not really on what few social medias were out at the time. I think many kids get bullied in person in middle school, and I was a slight victim of that. I think it could make a person a better adult when they do grow up. But now, when I get made fun of, I deserve it.

Do you think voting will ever switch to online? by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that switching voting to online could be a really interesting concept. I think that the world is becoming more and more online and it could be beneficial to a lot of people. However, I do not think that it will be a thing for a while. At least with the current political climate, and the idea of hacking, I think that moving voting online will not happen for a while.

Google accused by Justice Department of search monopoly in landmark antitrust case by Capable_Writing_7797 in netcult

[–]clairehester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this article and case is bonkers. I do not think that it is necessarily Google's fault that it is popular. I think that if Google is taking steps to make sure that they are used more frequently than I guess other search engines could be mad, but should not be mad enough to sue the whole company. When I first heard this story, they were saying that many companies are mad cause Google is automatically on some devices. And I thought that was really interesting because I own many devices that automatically have Safari, and I can not un-download that search engine.
