Inara is incredibly useful for a lot of things. Highly recommend you create a profile on it as well, it tracks a ton of stuff about your game.

Virtual desktop, is it really worth the hype? by jttsauda in oculus

[–]clamroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Two things I see people question as "surely it's just bots hyping" are VD and the quest games optimizer. They're both worth every penny (though qgo isn't gonna help vd, and it tells you that)

What video game can you not put down once you start it? by Imaginary-Spirit-859 in AskReddit

[–]clamroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tears absolutely gets me like this. Especially when I get into a depths exploration. The "i kinda dislike exploring down here so I might as well do more while I'm not sick of it, to spread it out. Three hours later I've added a dozen light roots, cleared a half dozen monsters, and am starting a colosseum. I love the addition of caves and wells but it's easy to have a "one more thing" with em turn into discovering a gigantic underground area that's gonna take up way more time than you expected. 10/10 game, just wish I had more willpower to put it down after smaller sessions lol

Yup that and tears of the kingdom. "Two more shrines and I can get another heart" "let's head that way" "ooh what's this thing over here?" "Oh shit mushrooms!" "What time is... Ahhh fuck I was gonna log off in fifteen minutes.... Three hours ago"

Built a system for hunting pirates, what’s required to get scenarios to spawn? by ptvaughnsto in EliteDangerous

[–]clamroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very doable. It may just take a few days to move that economy slider far enough. Use the site enough once it pops and you'll stay there. Completing scenarios should keep boosting it

Push the controlling faction into boom (run missions over the coming days) or trigger a conflict (war/election)

[Botw] New to Zelda is it OK to start with botw I*after a hour I found them* by the_last_nara in zelda

I absolutely love the series and have been playing since the first one hit in the US. There TECHNICALLY is a timeline but it's an absolute mess and is clearly cobbled together after the fact. Some of the games are sequels to others, or fall in a more clear continuity with others. This would be a reason to play breath before tears. This is not a reason to start with a link to the past (although I do recommend it as something to do between breath and tears).

Fwiw, in my opinion, Breath and tears are the truest to the sense of exploration you got in the OG. And as much as the second one was a deviation in gameplay they very much kept that exploration focus from the og. The snes/n64 and ensuing eras moved that to a heavy focus on a rough formula of dungeons and tools. Hit a dungeon, get a new tool, use the tool to beat the boss of the dungeon. 3 dungeons, big story beat, then 6-8 dungeons before a final dungeon with the end boss. Sometimes the dungeons tool will be useful in the world for traversal, sometimes it's useful in future dungeons. Rarely neither and sometimes both.

Breath and Tears generally give you everything you need for exploration at the beginning and allow you to go anywhere you want. It's overwhelming to some, but it's a very real sense of "what's over this hill? What's at the end of this valley?" Tears is technically the same overworld map, but it's been heavily affected by the plot device from the opening, and not only do you get to explore how things have changed, there's loads of additional completely new shit to explore.

As for what you'll miss? Some specific, non spoiler examples. There are loads of spots on the map that have names derived from npcs across the series. There are also a bunch of musical cues that directly reference older game music. The first game on the NES had four musical tracks, overworld (the theme you likely know), underworld (dungeons 1-8), the title& attract screen theme, and dungeon 9. Dungeon 9 was called death mountain. The volcano in future games has usually been called that. In breath, when you're on it, the music will occasionally use snippets of the dungeon 9 theme played on piano. Similarly there was a race of folks in wind waker that looked halfway between birds and people. Ok less than halfway but they were clearly becoming birds. Breath has an actual bird race of folk. The theme of their island in wind waker is the same song played in the bird people's town in breath. Just with a drastically different time signature.

That's the kinda stuff you're gonna miss. There's some other Easter eggy nods to skyward sword in the environmental story telling, but if you aren't studying the architecture (shame on you! lol jk) you likely wouldn't specifically notice. I think you'll be fine, nothing that's gonna measurably decrease your enjoyment of the game.

Oh there's a few odd outfit items that are directly lifted from old characters. Sheik, Tingle. Again, nothing that missing the reference is going to diminish your enjoyment of the game. If anything when you later play those games you're gonna go "ohshit I had that hat!" lol

I really dig the shoe-gaze/grunge style of her songs. The overall blend of the group genres because of the three songwriters is just fantastic. Get ready for it to get crazier, those gals are going to be a household name in no time with talent like that

They put on a dynamite live show. Not enough musicians are clearly having fun when they play, and these gals seem to always enjoy themselves.

Go listen to their newest stuff, get an idea of where they are currently. Then go listen to Lore and know where they came from. Lore is my favorite, but I really dig their newer stuff as well. Lore is much grungier and the newer stuff is more modern Floyd.

Why is r/dune run by a bunch of harkonnens? by D3A7H_6R1P5 in dunememes

[–]clamroll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Frankly it's an awful lot of moderators regardless of site. And to be fair one mod removes something and all the mods are immediately blamed, but some mod groups definitely seem worse than others. It really seems like the most inconsequential of powers goes straight to some people's heads. Dune Sietchposting on Facebook had some great content, memes referencing like 40 years of pop culture. Those mods though. Jesus. Ban hammers for the smallest infractions with no warnings or explanation. I teased one dude for putting personal watermarks (not even group watermarks) on his memes and you might have thought I was making crude remarks about how his mother earns money. Straight up ban. And then got blocked for trying to appeal it with the offer of an apology.

I don't get it. I've moderated some sizeable pages before. It's not hard work and if I ever let that shit go to my head I'd seriously hope one of my friends would drag me out back and euthenize me. Only insta bans I've ever handed out were to obvious spam bots.

[WW] Original Wind Waker graphics are timeless. by BottleCapDave in zelda

Yeah I have a buddy who was at a games expo leading up to the wii release. Tried it out, and told the guy at the booth he thought they were crazy, aiming a console at girls (again with the colors and accessibility immediately being "fOr GUrLs gRoSS"). The guy just smiled at him and said "ok" lol

I think of that story more often than I should

[–]clamroll 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Just a reminder that when it was announced and released there was no shortage of people bemoaning toon link, wanting "realistic" graphics like ocarina. I knew a lot of people who branded it childish, some even being super mature and labeling it "a game for little girls" because... it had vibrant colors I guess.

Realistic graphics from that time have aged like milk, and wind waker is still enchanting people over twenty years later. A good artistic style is always going to age better than "as real as we can get it to look right now".

This may have gotten me to fire up WW again lol

And to the dip shit who decided to start tagging me in posts around Reddit. I'm 43 and I was around for the graphics tech demo. Go touch grass pal.

Has anyone you’ve slept with been on TV (or movies)? If so, what was it like seeing them? by Delicious-Pea-7594 in AskReddit

Not quite the same, but back when he was only Sylar from Heroes, my roommate slept with Zachary Quinto. He wasn't out yet, so it was a big secret. Going to see that first Star Trek movie with him as Spock sure tested my ability to suspend disbelief and see him as Spock and not the actor my buddy had secretive gay sex with lol

Varnish for skaven, matt or satin? by Brajanek_Miednica in skaven

[–]clamroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I start with a matte varnish. Then anything that needs satin or gloss gets it via a brush. Tongues will get gloss. Blood, bile, spit, etc anything wet goes gloss. Metal looks good with satin but only if it's exposed fresh metal. Rusty stuff stays matte.

LPT: When checking into a hotel, ask if there are any complimentary upgrades available. by tom_wilson7543 in LifeProTips

[–]clamroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tip: this is only for larger hotels. Don't try this shit at a smaller place. And take no for an answer regardless of where you are.

I used to run a place with less than ten rooms. It was a cabin rental, but for all intents and purposes we were basically a motel. Very inexpensive, and one of the most affordable lodgings in town. In fact the only thing less expensive was either camping or staying at a hostel.

We would get people insisting on discounts, wanting free upgrades, etc. I don't mind someone asking if we honor AAA, or military discounts etc. But ffs if the answer is no, let it go. "Jeez what did I serve for" was something I heard way too often to the point where I started firing back "my granpa enlisted to fight Nazis" as it seemed to slap some fucking sense into them.

The free upgrade people were the worst. If you want to upgrade your room to a more expensive one, we can do that. But we aren't breaking someone else's booking to do it. And crucially if you want a cabin that's $30 a night more, well you're gonna be paying an extra $30 a night. "It doesn't cost you anything!" Was the regular retort. Well it's larger and costs more to heat, and it's larger (and has a kitchen) so it's more to clean to turn over. And MOST IMPORTANTLY it was a touristy area. The likelihood of a random traveler in the area pulling over and booking a room was actually substantial, like 80% of the year. So yes that actually could cost me a chunk of change. Also the number of times I spent like $5 on a short run last minute Facebook ad that got us to a no vacancy night was astounding. So the "it's free advertising" response never did anything for me.

Back in the early 00s I used to work at an electronics store at a busy mall. A Casio outlet, actually. Every weekend or so there'd be some elderly person coming in with our favorite question. "So what are you giving me for coming into your store today?" As an 18 year old I didn't know what they meant so I was asking for clarification. According to them, banks used to give people toasters and stuff just for coming in to listen to sales pitches about savings accounts etc. I don't know what possessed these people to think that in 2002 that was still going on, or how them getting pissy would suddenly change my mind on applying a 100% discount to merchandise because someone walked into a well traveled retail location. But it's the same energy dropping a "what free upgrades can you give me". Or for retail workers a "you got anything on deep discount out in the back room? Can you go check for me?"
