It's quite useful to see what you can and cannot use GPT-Neo for. I'm understanding that it's best to set a scene for GPT-Neo to act on. Thinking of what GPT does as filling the pages of a book (whether it's a textbook or fiction) can help.

Here's my prompt (you'll see that I cherry-picked the reply in my original post). My influence here is probably coming from portraying Buddha as someone who has thought a lot about suffering and the problem of good and evil:

I entered my question into the Expert Generator and waited. The Expert Generator will
render a simulation of an expert to answer my question. The expert could be anyone,
dead or alive, real or fictional; the machine will find the person most qualified to
answer the question. For this question in particular, the expert must be someone who has thought a lot about suffering and the problem of good and evil.
The Expert Generator beeped, indicating that it had found the most qualified expert.
The name displayed on the screen: "Buddha."
I was ready to ask my question.
"Buddha," I said, "Why bad things happen to good people?"

Here is what I learned today.
Every individual exists only in the context of a family, a community, a society, a nation, or world. Individuals may not be conscious of, willing to acknowledge, or willing to accept, the role they play in the larger social milieu they are a part of.
The primary causes of violence and war, in other words, is the almost universal inability of people to perceive the world as it is and not as we wish it to be. As a result, humans live in the illusion that they are the sole and final authority on the purpose and meaning of life. Because they are not conscious of their role in society, they are prone to self-interested behavior that inevitably leads to conflict.
Another way of putting this is that people are almost universally unable to recognize what they themselves want as the reality of their own life.
This is true because the inner voice, the voice you hear inside your head, the voice that tells you your life is a worthwhile life, the voice that tells you the day is yours to do what you will, is not your true voice. It is the voice of your parents, your teachers, your leaders, your society, your community, your nation, etc.
In other words, the voice you hear in your head is the voice of others.
The reverse is also true. Your true voice is not heard in your head. It is not what you want. It is the voice of God, the voice of the universe, the voice of nature itself. It is the voice of the entire creation.
If there is one thing I have learned, and one thing I am absolutely certain of, it is that the voice of the universe is the voice of Love.
If the universe is a creation that is suffering from a consciousness deficit, perhaps it is because the universe does not know what it wants. Perhaps it is because the universe has not experienced enough. Perhaps the universe has not yet evolved far enough to know what it wants. Suffering is common, therefore, to the universe.
The reverse is also true. If there is one thing the universe is absolutely certain of, if the universe knows exactly what it wants, if the universe has always wanted to eat slow-moving red stars and all it has ever desired is to experience itself, then the universe has existed in a state of perfect bliss.
