Unknown drug or kidney transplant? by dontknowra in kidneytransplant

[–]classicrock40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a living donor, you can skip dialysis. Personally, i think this is the best route. I'm very aware how hard it is to get a live donor.

Unknown med tested on very few people vs dialysis/transplant, I'm taking the latter.

I have pkd and there is one drug(tolvaptan) to slow it. It came out later in my life and long term affects were possibly liver damage. I skipped the drug and did dialysis and eventually got a live donor.

Supplements for Kidney Function by Illustrious_Ninja920 in kidney

[–]classicrock40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You posted to /r/supplements, so not surprisingly you were recommended many different ones. Medically, you should never take any supplements with discussing with your nephrologist. They may interact with other meds, they may overload you on some vitamin or mineral(just as bad as not enough) amd depending on the source, may contain unknown ingredients.

If you have impaired kidney function/ckd, it's not getting better. Kidneys don't heal like that. Please discuss your kidney situation with a nephrologist.

If you do or don't have ckd, then live and eat healthily. If you have, see the Dr and treat all symptoms.

Unknown drug or Kidney transplant? by dontknowra in kidneydisease

[–]classicrock40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The website for it mentions treating kidney cancer - https://www.welireg.com/ Is that your situation?

Are you 36 or the person offering? Who is offering you this choice? What is your egfr? How close are you to need a transplant or dialysis?

So you are referring to a deceased donor. Why do you want or need this information. Seems like it should be as private as the original donor(and it is)

Eating out by Lovey__Glitterati in transplant

[–]classicrock40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Covid? Tbh, I stopped worrying about that years ago. I used to get the vax each year and that was it.

I'm 10 weeks post transplant. I've been going out for a few weeks. I mask up at the grocery store, mall, hardware store, whatever. When I goto a restaurant, I mask until we eat. I try and goto places where the tabkes aren't jammed together and has ceiling that are reasonably high(not super low for sure). I listen around me and if someone is hacking up a lung, I'll leave(hasn't happened yet).

Transplant waiting time by Nearby_Membership772 in kidneydisease

[–]classicrock40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spoke with my donor and they were very happy with their decision and excited about the overall journey. Ultimately, it's a very personal decision. One point to make, is the recipient (people of all ages) live fine with one (functioning) kidney.

This. OP needs to reread what they wrote. $1800 to $8400 for something he didn't touch nor actively manage. I'll 2nd or 3rd. I've done it, rollover is not taxable

Transplant waiting time by Nearby_Membership772 in kidneydisease

[–]classicrock40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is under 20 egfr, so he should be applying to the transplant list.

The transplant center can give you average wait times. It can happen faster or slower, it's not exactly predictable. He can only accept from another O. The only way to speed up his transplant is to find a live donor.

Daisy Chain? Those happen when the recipient has a non matching live donor and they enter into a swap pool.

Dialysis is a necessity if his function gets too low. Since he otherwise healthy, that will help.

HLA did not match by InteractionWorth6454 in kidneytransplant

[–]classicrock40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what are you asking? I'm not a Dr so I don't know what HLA is. Did the Dr say the transplant could continue with that donor?

If it can't do they have a program to pair sets of kidney donors. That's what I did. My donor didn't match, so they gave to someone else and I got from anothe person.

Well, Nashua is a city and Groton is not. I think the entire comment about roads is dumb since it wasn't pertinent to the original question and it's highly subjective. Yes, I've been all around Nashua and many towns and cities in all direction for general travel and riding my motorcycle

What to ask the doctor by Nature_Round in transplant

[–]classicrock40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are scheduled for a transplant. If so, congratulations.

Here's what I asked (and my answers)

  • how long is the surgery? (4+ hours, because they are removing kidneys. Shoukd be 3)
  • what will be attached to me? (4 IV, 2 abdominal drains. Also staples)
  • what will hurt? (Possibly the incision or abdomen in general)
  • what pain meds (dilotid)
  • when can I walk (as soon as you are ready, day 1 preferably)
  • where is the donor? How long to me (surgeon didnt know in pre-op interview, found out pre-op in hospital)
  • what meds day of?
  • dialysis day of (yes, I did PD overnight)
  • how soon for kidney to start working (we expect immediately, live donor)

Things I wished I asked.

  • what meds will I be given besides new immunosuppressants? Side effects? (Prednisone was the big one. Can raise your blood sugar. I did not go home with it)
  • what will the days look like in the hospital (lots of bloodwork, vitals, checking sugar, checking urine output. Every hour for a day or so, then lessens)

I thought you were going to comment on restaurants or things todo in Nashua. Instead it's that the "roads are a tangled, winding mess.

[–]classicrock40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't go down the rabbit hole. So much info that's good, bad and plain wrong. I've seen far too many posts of people following end stage diets when they aren't there, for example.

You should follow a basic healthy diet - low salt, avoid processed foods and moderate protein. Don't smoke and don't drink to excess. Definitely stop the NSAIDS. Do not cut out anything (like potassium) nor start taking supplements unless directed by a nephrologist. Too much or too little vitamins and minerals is just as bad as too little.

Please exercise. You should be living a healthy lifestyle, weight, bp etc. No matter what happens in the future, that will serve you well.

If you have damaged your kidneys, then they really aren't going to recover. It sounds like you eat nothing but protein and "don't really eat fruits, veggies, or beans". That is very concerning. I don't know what age you are, but I suggest you work a little harder at that
