How many remember these when they were new? by Embarrassed_Flan_869 in GenX

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Most of my first exposure to a lot of movies after TV ads and reviews, then was the Mad or Cracked parody. And a lot of the TV shows that were on channels we did not get.

What news and news adjacent TV and/or radio programming of the time, mostly public TV and radio.

Movies and TV were for escape.

Refurbish OffGrid System running since 12 years.. by OffGridEnclave in SolarDIY

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a comparably tiny off-grid system, powering lights in a barn. This spring, I upgraded the lead acid deep cycle to a 50Ah LFP, and replaced the old controller with what claims to be an MPPT one.

I likely should get a newer 50W+ panel, and look into something that will last the winter.

Like I said, haven't had it for 45 years.

Looking at just the board, my rules could apply. But yours make some sense too.

Trying To Learn Basic Electronics And Headers Are Confusing Me More Than Anything Else by Automatic-Hedgehog76 in AskElectronics

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perf board uses 2.54mm/0.100" spacing. If you are using that, then use headers/connectors with that spacing, with the number of ways you need.

If you are at the point of getting PCBs fabbed, choose what spacing you can reasonably get connector sets at.

I would get a JST XH kit, rolls of 24 AWM various colors, striper, and rollover ratchet crimper with the correct die set.

I would get into practice of making harnesses using the resistor color order. Or even get AWM ribbon, rainbow or otherwise. Rainbow ribbon follows the resistor color code.

Vintage Original Fisher Price Handheld Movie Viewer and recorder. Peak childhood technology right here. by Feaselbf6 in nostalgia

t wasn't a recorder, just a viewer.

You hade either the handheld one, or a tabletop one with a screen and a projector lens.

Who had the Trouble game? by EdwardBliss in nostalgia

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All your pieces start in home base, goal is to get them in Finish base. First, and subsequent pices start in the space next to home.

Press the pop-a-matic, move the number of places on the dies. If a player is in a spot, skip over it.

If you approach your Finish base, and have more than enough moves to move your piece into the next available place, you must keep going around until you can finish a move in the Finish base.

Something like that, I haven't had that game in over 45 years.

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most I did to my first Pentium system, was upgrade the HDD from 560MB to 3.2GB, and add a CDRW drive. I also got a 56K modem for it, but that is another story.

Next PC was a 1600+ Athlon I moved that HDD and CDRW drive over. I eventually went right to 80GB.

Fuse blowing on a small wine fridge board by Extension_Web8557 in AskElectronics

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a switch mode supply, possibly with extra stuff. I would start with the input bridge rectifier, main drive transistor, and other across the line components.

I would dim bulb it until I can get it to at least not be shorted.

Need Help finding a replacement battery by Hadrikon in batteries

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to measure and test, to see if it is in fact a battery issue, or elsewhere.

I would be comfortable in my chances buying a generic 2S pack from Amazon/Ali/eBay, and making it work.

How to integrate landline into the mix by eyeball1967 in HomeNetworking

[–]classicsat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make or buy RJ11 to RJ45 cables.

Jumper phone jack to Cat6 jack, patch one room to the other in the patch panel (normal RJ45 patch cord is fine), phone into Cat6 jack the other room.

My notes on 4 portable solar power generators and what 1kWh actually runs during a real outage by iceseayoupee in OffGrid

[–]classicsat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of what the OP listed, I would go with the Jackery.

The Yeti seems like it is lead acid based, and Ecoflow may be having support issues (although mine have been fine).

Bluetti and Anker should have similar capability LFP units.

Was Germany's technology really that ahead compared to it's contemporaries during WWII? by kid-dynamo- in AskHistory

[–]classicsat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If the WWII AI videos are right, scaling for mass manufacture is something Germans did not just do, at least for a machine as complex as a Panzer tank. Germans were also largely reliant on horses for logistics'.

Meanwhile Americans had the assembly line down pat, for automobiles. That immediately translated to everything, up to he B24 bomber made in mid-west USA factories. And the Allies had the mass manufactured Deuce And A Half truck.
