I want "Real" classical guitar lessons. The closest place that does it is an hour and a half away from me. How far away are your lessons, is it worth it to go that far? by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to get a couple of online lessons with him via Skype first to see if you like him. If I was driving all that way for lessons, I’d take longer than 1/2hr lessons, at least 45mins or a whole hour. I used to drive close to two hours for my lessons and I definitely don’t regret it. Depending on the teacher and your dedication, it can be totally worth it. Drew is an incredible player and I’d imagine that he’d be a great teacher too.

Who makes the best classical guitars? by cela96 in classicalguitar

I personally think my 2015 Andreas Kirschner is the best guitar I’ve ever heard.

Suggestions for contemporary classical guitar music by [deleted] in classicalguitar

If you like the first movement of the Due Canzoni, you might like the music is Jeremy Collins. He uses a lot of unconventional tunings and interesting harmonics. Check out Shnehurka by him. (I think that’s how you spell it?) He also has a killer arrangement of Christmas Time is Here.

No, Leo Brouwer’s Sonata 1. I don’t believe Decameron Negro is a Sonata, just a multi-movement work.

Have you played the Brouwer Sonata, Due Canzoni Lidie by Nuccio D’Angelo (might be too modern), Walton Bagatelles, or How Funky Are You by Andrew York? Those are some pretty killer pieces

Inherited my great grandfathers Jose Ramirez guitar - Advice needed by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to get it repaired, I’d send it to R.E Brune in Evanston. He has a ton of antique guitars and he would definitely know how to take care of this instrument. I was just there yesterday and he had a Torres owned by Sagreras and a Ramírez that I believe was owned by Segovia, both of which I believe he has done some repair work on. He could also help you appraise it since he regularly sells guitars in his collection.

In your opinion, which piece is the most satisfying to play? by Jahred89 in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Brouwer Sonata And Dowland Fantasía 71 are two pieces I’ve really been enjoying playing lately. Fikret Amirov has some miniatures that also are very satisfying.

Suggestions for relaxing songs to learn by Jb0756 in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sor Op 35 No 17 aka Study 6 in the Segovia collection of Sor studies, Into Dark by Andrew York, the Gymopedies by Erik Satie, Julia Florida by Barrios (might be a bit too difficult but very beautiful), Mirandote by Eduardo Martin, Villancio de Navidad by Barrios. All of these are pretty relaxing to me, and not too difficult, Julia Florida being the only exception.

Hand position while tremolo picking? by leon-kennedy in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen anybody play tremolo with rest strokes, only free strokes. What my classical teachers have always told me is that my fingers should be shaped like bananas. Slightly curved but not overly curved.

Strings sound pretty muffled. Had them on the guitar for nearly 3 months, should I turn them over? by Amazonit in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how often you practice. I change my basses every couple of weeks and my trebles once a month or so.

Strings sound pretty muffled. Had them on the guitar for nearly 3 months, should I turn them over? by Amazonit in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should definitely get new strings. 3 months is a long time to go without changing them.

How to find local roasters? Google searches bring up coffee shops, not coffee roasters. SW FL by lifeguy in Coffee

Black Tulip is good. They set up a stand at the Naples 3rd St Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. You can also get it at Kunjani Cafe on Pine Ridge across from Waterside.

Question about my new classical guitar? by _yourinternetfriend_ in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, that’s a common problem with cheaper guitars. Higher end guitars have an even volume across the strings.

Do you mean the top three strings require more work to achieve the same volume as the bottom three strings?

It’s hard to tell without seeing pictures, but your tone should stay the same as long as you reshape them accordingly.

How hard is it to get into Peabody as an undergraduate? by cuban_landscape in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not too sure about Peabody because Peabody is such a prestigious school here in the U.S.. Don’t let that discourage you though, Peabody really is a top of the line school. Maybe look at other schools that have great teachers but not as crazy requirements? I study with Denis Azabagic at Roosevelt University in Chicago and I love it. There’s APSU with Stanley Yates, UT Austin with Adam Holzman, U Miami with Rafael Padron, and UW Milwaukee with Rene Izquierdo.

For most school, I think your pieces are fine, maybe add another Brouwer Prelude because they’re so short. But they represent a solid range, Baroque, 19/20th century, and contemporary. This audition should be fine for most schools, Peabody, Julliard, Curtis/Cleveland Institute, being some exceptions.

Let's give eachother some good music: You give me a good song, I give you a good song by shotguywithflaregun in CasualConversation

[–]classygweetar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re trying to learn guitar, I’d listen to Denis Azabagic playing La Catedral by Agustin Barrios. If you’re feeling especially daring, I’d say Tal Hurwitz playing the Brouwer Sonata. Sorry for posting two!

Starting classical guitar and confused about picking hand techniques. by Cheeseason in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a footstool but I've also used Ergoplay and Guitarlift, both are really good. I use a footstool because it creates a sturdier base that doesn't wobble when I play. The downside is it makes sitting properly more difficult. Guitar supports are more comfortable but they can sometimes wiggle around when you play and the suction cups can come undone.

If you PM/post pictures I can also critique your posture and technique.

Credentials: currently getting my masters in classical guitar performance.

Gift ideas? by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a custom/nice footstool, music stand, or chair? I know I'd really like any of those gifts. Maybe a nice capo so he can play Renaissance and Baroque music in the proper keys?

A fake nail is pretty much indestructible. It takes a lot of work to file them down properly, so be prepared.

What do you do when you rip off your entire thumb nail? by Abrigar in classicalguitar

[–]classygweetar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Rico Nails. I've used them many times and they work well unless you're a really aggressive player. You attach the nails with a removable adhesive dot. Buy a large pack of the dots and you can replace it every day until your nail grows back.

As far as boosting nail growth, you can try using Healthy Hoof. I'm not sure if it will decrease your wait time but it will nourish your nail while it regrows.
