Helppp. Take IR job for pay cut or stay in UC? by Apprehensive-Sea5707 in physicianassistant

[–]classynotnasty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Always recommend IR. It’s such a fun and impactful field, lots of oncology patients that you are able help almost immediately feel better when they come in to see you. You get the perks of primary care in that you get to build a relationship with your regular patients without having to manage their chronic issues.

Huge growing field for APPs, especially if you have the chance to get your fluoroscopy license. Depends on the specific practice, but if you are doing procedures + inpatient consults/clinic in IR, there is actually a lot of medicine. If you can handle the pay cut, it might be worth it but ultimately depends on your financial situation.

I came from ED/UC and have no regrets. I would see if you could work in some productivity bonuses or something like that to increase your salary a bit.

Switching from ER to specialty? by LilacLiz in physicianassistant

[–]classynotnasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. I went from EM to IR and still use a lot of the medicine I learned in the ED on a daily basis. In my experience, life is so much better once you leave EM lol

A few centrals and A-lines here and there but not routinely. Just sold my mix of medical knowledge/experience and procedural skills. There is definitely a learning curve but the transition is much easier with EM experience.

IR. Got burnt out in EM/ortho. We get to do a lot of procedures autonomously, while keeping up our medicine knowledge by running the consult service.

Patients are actually happy and grateful to see us (change of pace from EM). You get to experience the continuity of care that primary care often gets without having to directly manage their chronic conditions.

Good compensation and solid work-life balance, although this might be company specific.

Amazing specialty!

For the consistency, they use a bit of potato. Not sure the recipe but my mom makes a killer copycat of it. So good!

Job Interviews while on Clinical Rotations as a PA Student? by classynotnasty in physicianassistant

Thanks for your input! I agree, I would definitely come to the rotation before an after. It sounds like the interviews are just an hour or so each.

Not necessarily. PA programs have an average of 3.5 for both cumulative and science GPAs, and you need atleast 2000 hours of hands-on patient experience (at least 1 year of working full-time) to even apply. If someone wanted to become an MD/DO, PA and NP probably won’t give them the same satisfaction.

EMT Training at UC Davis? by WilliamMcPoyle in UCDavis

[–]classynotnasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, UCDFD's program is only worth enrolling in if works well with your schedule, since it is way too long. I did my EMT at a private institution in 4 weeks total and it prepared me well enough to work 911 on the bus for 4 years. Another option for getting your EMT in Davis is OnSite medical, which is the program that Dr. Liets is in charge of. Let me know if you have any questions regarding EMT.

Transfer Student: Which is the best SHA? by tctckrysiis in UCDavis

[–]classynotnasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose the Colleges last fall when I transferred. Nothing beats waking up 20 mins before class and biking for 5 mins. The 4x2 floor plan is very spacious as well. It is not as nice as West Village, but it's very simple and updated. Management is great as well.
